I started my doberman at about 10 or 11 months and use an e-collar because she chases after my horses. I went with the Dogtra 280NCP, it works pretty well. But I would strongly suggest not using an e-collar until it becomes your last resort AND also research how to use one properly before using it.

Dog training collars come in all shapes and sizes and for all breeds and ages of dog. You fit a training collar around your dogs neck (assuming they're OK with that and don't immediately pull it off), and then it is either remote controlled or has a sound activation.

Some "dog training" collars are actually just ordinary collars, and the makers will encourage you to attach a lead to them and give it a yank when the dog misbehaves. I disagree with this approach to dog training, partly because it's dangerous and partly because it generally doesn't do much good unless done perfectly.

Of the other types of dog training collar, they fit into two broad categories: anti-bark and general purpose.

The anti-bark dog training collars are sound activated. They have a small box of unpleasant smelling perfume just under the dogs nose, and a little sensor which detects when the dog barks. As he (or she) barks, a small squirt of the perfume is released, irritating the dog. The idea is that eventually the dog will begin to associate the unpleasant smell with barking, and so stop barking.

While this device has it's roots based in the psychological bell ringing dog studies conducted by Pavlov, general consensus amongst dog trainers is that these dog training collars are to be avoided. Good training regimes should reward dogs for good behavior instead of punishing bad behaviour.

The other type of collar is very similar, except instead of releasing bad smelling perfume, these training collars may impart a small electric shock to the dog wearing it when you press a button on a remote control. The advice given by the manufacturers is that you can discipline your dog from afar, if he's about to chew up someone else's football, ruin some plants or is running around a kids playground barking his head off and you can't catch him.

Again, I'd recommend that you avoid these dog training collars. Electrocuting your dog is not the way to get him to behave, and any collars that you put on him (or her) could just make him more agitated and excitable, and exacerbate his behavior, not control it. Imagine if you were angry and letting off some steam, and someone started shocking you? You wouldn't be very happy, would you?

The best approach to dog training isn't collars, it's a full and complete training system developed by professionals, which encourages a strong relationship between you and the dog, and rewards for good behavior. There's plenty of professional advice available so you don't have to resort to dog training collars.

Anyone used remote trainers (electric shock collars) to condition 2 pit bulls not to fight?

I'm at my wits end with my 2 neutered female pit bulls. Suddenly, the younger (age 1 and a half) one attacks the older (age 3) one for no reason and a vicious fight ensues. I've tried everything - muzzling, more exercise, recognizing the dominance of the younger dog, asking for advice. The bottom line seems to be "crate and rotate", which is what I have been doing, but I really dislike it even besides the inconvenience. I have an electric fence on my property and that works like magic. My dogs will NOT cross their boundaries even IF they aren't wearing their collars because they've been conditioned to know that if they do, they will get a shock. I'm wondering if I'd have such sucess with remote training collars for the fighting problem. Two collars would cost about $300 to $400, so I'd sure like to hear from others who may have had real-life experience with this issue, especially with this breed, before I put out that much money for nothing.

I wouldnt recommend using a shock collar while they are fighting. It produces a zap and when the dog cries out, the other dog will take it as a sign of weakness.
Try this:
When to dogs start to get into it (like immediately) you have to become the alpha and put it in it's place.
If you are able to get them to stop (not recommended to put your hands in there but a leash or stick works). Put them both on the ground. (On their sides or backs). This is the submissive positions and in the wild, the pack leader will put the dogs on the ground if they get out of line.

Check out Ceaser Milan-that man is a genious. There are episodes that are similar to your situation and you can get some pointers from there.

The use of electronic training devices has become increasingly widespread. In 2006 pet owners worldwide purchased more than 500,000 remote training collars, over 1,000,000 containment systems, and almost 900,000 bark collars.

Why the popularity? These training systems have become much more affordable, and pet owners are finding them to be a safe, effective means for controlling the various behaviors that they find unacceptable.

As sales of these products increase, so do the not so favorable opinions about them -- that they make dogs aggressive, that there is a greater chance of failure than success when using them, that the shock they deliver is painful, that they will result in significant injury to your pet.

These can all be classified as "myths", since there is very little hard data available to prove or disprove them. However, recent studies are providing results that allow for a more reasoned analysis of this technology.

Last year, one of the major manufacturers of electronic training products retained an independent laboratory to compare the level of correction produced by a pet containment system receiver to the shock produced by other common circumstances and devices. The evaluation demonstrated that the "shock" produced by a containment system is nowhere near the intensity that some people believe.

The "shock" produced by the containment system is nearly 40% less that than that one would receive from walking on carpet. (Please note that static shock will vary greatly depending on the relative humidity: the lower the humidity, the higher the shock.)

Further, this study demonstrates that the training "shock" is one-fourth the level of a cattle fence and one-twentieth the level of a stun gun, two devices to which electronic training equipment is often unfairly compared.

But even this study tells only half the story. It compared the voltage put out by these devices...the intensity. You also need to consider the duration. Reputable brands of electronic training equipment correct for only a short period of time. The brand that has the UL mark of approval on its receiver features a correction that lasts only 1/40 of a second -- less time than it takes the average person to snap their fingers.

But what this study does demonstrate is that not all "shock" is the same. And that the correction in question is not "painful," "powerful" or even "uncomfortable." "Surprising" maybe, but none of the above.

Still, every animal will react differently to the correction. So you should always approach a training situation with caution when using this kind of equipment. As is usually the case, education is the answer. When you are training a pet, you need to have as much information as possible...and a behavior management plan to support you, as you would with traditional training techniques. When looking at selecting a product select one that provides you with both instructional manuals and videos.

If you choose a product that supplies you with these necessary educational materials you will greatly increase your chances of success when attempting to improve your dog's behavior. To help demonstrate this fact let's look at a survey that was recently completed by a leading manufacturer of electronic training equipment.

This company surveyed 1,025 dog owners that had been using one of three types of electronic training equipment (remote training collar, bark control collar or containment system) for a period of not less than 90 days.

The most significant findings came as the result of asking the pet owner the following question, "Since using the electronic training product how would you describe your pet's overall behavior?" The owner was asked to respond with one of the following: a) better behaved (and specifically how), b) no change in behavior or c) worse behaved (and specifically how).

The results are staggering. Slightly over 2/3 (860 of 1,025 dog owners) responded that their dogs overall behavior had in fact improved since using the electronic equipment.

Reasons that these dogs would show an overall improvement in their behavior would include that the owners used the equipment correctly. Correct use includes spending a significant amount of time working with and socializing with your dog. When a dog receives an increase in time and attention, his behavior will usually change for the better.

This survey also helps to dispel another myth about the use of electronic training equipment - that it causes dogs to act aggressive. None of the dog owners surveyed purchased the equipment for the purpose of eliminating aggressive behavior. However, approximately 12% stated that another positive side effect of using the equipment was that their dog no longer exhibited occasional aggressive behavior that had been seen in the past. Also, of those owners stating that their dogs behavior worsened in some way since using the equipment, none reported the worsening being in the form of aggressive behavior.

The spray is non-toxic and the units are rated for dogs as small as puppies. I've been sprayed in the face a few times myself.

Be aware that no training tool is going to fix a barking problem by itself. If you are hoping you can put the collar on and have the dog train herself not to bark...it's not going to happen.

These tools are only as effective as the trainer using them. That means you have to be consistent. Each and every time she stops barking, whether it is because she was sprayed or not, you must remember to praise her. Praise for silence is more effective that sprays for barking. The whole purpose of the spray is to interrupt the barking and distract her for that small fraction of a second of silence you need to squeeze in the praise for silence. That's how it works.

A dog crate is a metal and plastic cage for your dog to sleep in or be in while you are away, the crate helps give your dog a secure place to live while in your home and a place to retreat to when things get a bit to hectic as they do in many family homes today.

Crate training is a very popular and effective technique for teaching your dog right from wrong; this method includes teaching rules of eliminating, sleeping arrangements, and keeping your dog from being destructive when you are out amongst many other benefits.

To crate train you must choose a correctly sized crate that your dog or puppy will be able to grow into with time and they will not be too cramped or have too much space. If your dog has a crate that is too small they won’t want to live there or go there and if the crate is too large it leads to eliminating problems.

You should make your dog feel as comfortable as you can in their crate; this should include putting a bowl of water with your dog in their crate, a nice easily cleanable blanket and put them in an area that is widely used by the family so they always feel part of what is going on.

When you are out, your dog can be closed in their crate to ensure common bad behavioural problems don’t happen while you are out such as chewing, biting and eliminating in the house. Be sure not to keep your dog in their crate for longer than about 4 hours and to let them go to the toilet on a regular basis.

Dogs will naturally not want to eliminate in their place of sleep so as you dog gets used to its new sleeping area it will want to go to the toilet only when they are let out so be sure to take them to their appropriate place for eliminating when they are let out, then reward them for behaving in the correct manner.

Always reward your dog for using the crate in the correct way and be sure all members of the family know that the dog should not be pestered in their crate. As long as this rule is followed then you won’t go far wrong and you will begin to notice great improvements in your dog’s behaviour immediately.

Has anyone heard of this 'training system'?

Its Don Sullivan's 'The Perfect Dog". It claims that with using his techniques and the 'command collar' that you can train your dog sit, lay down and stay in as little as 5 minutes. It also says you can correct all kinds of bad behaviors as well as teach them to respect any and all boundaries that you tell them without using shock collars nor invisible fences. I was gonna enroll my dog in training next month, for the same price as this set. If it really does work, I'd do it in a heart beat. I'm skeptical though. VERY skeptical. Does anyone know who this guy is, if he's actually a good trainer and has anyone used the system before? Do you recommend it or is it just another infommercial scam?

i was wondering if it really works beacause my dog is a barker and if it is not dandres.

I don't like ones that supposedly go off automatically when your dog barks, because in my experience, they are also triggered when next door's dogs bark, a bird squawks or a door slams... and you end up with a neurotic dog who doesn't know why this high pitched noise keeps happening...

Better are the bark collars which are triggered by a remote control - it means more work on the owner's part, but they don't tend to go off at random like the others do - and the dog very quickly learns which behaviour creates the unpleasant noise. I used one which also vibrated - and my young barker was a different dog within a couple of days. These days he wears the collar on walks, but I haven't replaced the batteries for months.... so it doesn't actually work, but I never need to use it anymore.

what brand shock collar do you prefer to use?

Why do people make judgments about shock collars when they are ignorant on how to use them. It is not negative training. if you think it is then when you put a choke collar on your dog or put a leash on your dog you are doing the same thing. using a chock collar you teach the dog to turn the stimulation off. if you put the probes on your hand you can barely feel the stimulation. it is not negative training. a shock collar is nothingn more than a remote control leash which allows you to correct your dog when he is 300 yards away from you...

ive been learning to be an animal trainer and have been intrested in training for a long time now.
i aggree with you about most people not knowing how to use them propley, which has caused the bad press about them.
yes they do get results fast. it does come under the remote punishment section of operant conditioning. and works by giving the animal discomfut to stop a behaviour(not pain when used propley) but i wouldnt use one as i prefur to use positive renforcement (giving the animal something it enjoys) it dose take longer i know.

if people researched in to training and devices they would understand better. but if i had to chose one it would be one with lower settings. it all comes down to your own training methods.

The use of electronic training devices has become increasingly widespread. In 2006 pet owners worldwide purchased more than 500,000 remote training collars, over 1,000,000 containment systems, and almost 900,000 bark collars.

Why the popularity? These training systems have become much more affordable, and pet owners are finding them to be a safe, effective means for controlling the various behaviors that they find unacceptable.

As sales of these products increase, so do the not so favorable opinions about them -- that they make dogs aggressive, that there is a greater chance of failure than success when using them, that the shock they deliver is painful, that they will result in significant injury to your pet.

These can all be classified as "myths", since there is very little hard data available to prove or disprove them. However, recent studies are providing results that allow for a more reasoned analysis of this technology.

Last year, one of the major manufacturers of electronic training products retained an independent laboratory to compare the level of correction produced by a pet containment system receiver to the shock produced by other common circumstances and devices. The evaluation demonstrated that the "shock" produced by a containment system is nowhere near the intensity that some people believe.

The "shock" produced by the containment system is nearly 40% less that than that one would receive from walking on carpet. (Please note that static shock will vary greatly depending on the relative humidity: the lower the humidity, the higher the shock.)

Further, this study demonstrates that the training "shock" is one-fourth the level of a cattle fence and one-twentieth the level of a stun gun, two devices to which electronic training equipment is often unfairly compared.

But even this study tells only half the story. It compared the voltage put out by these devices...the intensity. You also need to consider the duration. Reputable brands of electronic training equipment correct for only a short period of time. The brand that has the UL mark of approval on its receiver features a correction that lasts only 1/40 of a second -- less time than it takes the average person to snap their fingers.

But what this study does demonstrate is that not all "shock" is the same. And that the correction in question is not "painful," "powerful" or even "uncomfortable." "Surprising" maybe, but none of the above.

Still, every animal will react differently to the correction. So you should always approach a training situation with caution when using this kind of equipment. As is usually the case, education is the answer. When you are training a pet, you need to have as much information as possible...and a behavior management plan to support you, as you would with traditional training techniques. When looking at selecting a product select one that provides you with both instructional manuals and videos.

If you choose a product that supplies you with these necessary educational materials you will greatly increase your chances of success when attempting to improve your dog's behavior. To help demonstrate this fact let's look at a survey that was recently completed by a leading manufacturer of electronic training equipment.

This company surveyed 1,025 dog owners that had been using one of three types of electronic training equipment (remote training collar, bark control collar or containment system) for a period of not less than 90 days.

The most significant findings came as the result of asking the pet owner the following question, "Since using the electronic training product how would you describe your pet's overall behavior?" The owner was asked to respond with one of the following: a) better behaved (and specifically how), b) no change in behavior or c) worse behaved (and specifically how).

The results are staggering. Slightly over 2/3 (860 of 1,025 dog owners) responded that their dogs overall behavior had in fact improved since using the electronic equipment.

Reasons that these dogs would show an overall improvement in their behavior would include that the owners used the equipment correctly. Correct use includes spending a significant amount of time working with and socializing with your dog. When a dog receives an increase in time and attention, his behavior will usually change for the better.

This survey also helps to dispel another myth about the use of electronic training equipment - that it causes dogs to act aggressive. None of the dog owners surveyed purchased the equipment for the purpose of eliminating aggressive behavior. However, approximately 12% stated that another positive side effect of using the equipment was that their dog no longer exhibited occasional aggressive behavior that had been seen in the past. Also, of those owners stating that their dogs behavior worsened in some way since using the equipment, none reported the worsening being in the form of aggressive behavior.
