Dog Clicker
I just started clicker training. How do I know if my dog knows what the click means?

I don't know of any way to tell if my 6 year old pug Dudley knows what the click of the clicker means. Is there any way to tell? Also, I'd like some tips to help me get started with clicker training.

You will know that he clicker is "charged" when you click and your dog turns around and looks at you or perks his ears and shows interest.

It can take a couple of days to "charge" the clicker. As said beore - get a bag of treats, and simply click and treat - several times a day.

The treats should be very small as he is a small dog and you don't want him to fill up on treats. You can also use his dinnertime for charging the clicker. Hold the bowl and give him a kibble after each click.

The best way to learn the method is to go to a class. They can help you with the right methods and timing. The treat must come within a couple of seconds after the click.

There are videos - some are free on the following site:

www.clickertraining.com

It's lots of fun and I know a great pug agility dog! Hope you can find a class in your area.

One of the most well-known forms of training dogs for proper behavior and obedience is the leash and collar training. In fact, this practice has been going around for years and is almost considered traditional by trainers and owners alike.

Generally speaking, it is best to train puppies more than the adult dogs as they already have a background of experiences and established foundation of behavior, along side it are the disagreeable dog behavior problems. However, it is not true that you can't teach old dog new tricks. However, trainable adults dog may seem, training them would considerably take much time, not to mention the effort one must exert to achieve satisfactory results

At any rate, a trainer must never use harsh forms of dog training equipment. Take for example the choke chain. This chain is neither for beginners nor recommended at all. However, an experienced trainer can use it but with the highest degree of care observance. Studies show that extensive neck and trachea injuries have been related with the use of this type of dog training equipment. It does precisely what its name says, it truly chokes and if your puppy is a puller, it will choke constantly.

There are other forms of gentler dog training equipment in the forms of collar. These are the Prong collar, the Halti, the le Leader and the Electronic Collar.

To start with your puppy's leash and collar training fasten a lightweight leash on your puppies' neck and just allow him go around the house to play and walk around. He might pull on it for quite sometime but the idea for now is just to let him get comfortable with the idea. Repeat this practice for a number of times a day for a couple of days and it will be noticeable that he'll get used with the leash. It is important not to leave the puppy alone with this dog training equipment as he might choke himself if not properly It is important not to leave the puppy alone with this dog training equipment as he might choke himself if not properly supervised.

To train your dog or puppy to walk beside you Is not to allow them to pull you, and in return you should not be pulling them. Learn to control your dog using a leash and see to it that the leash does not choke him. Moreover learn the techniques of leash correction.

Another effective and productive dog training equipment is the clicker. Dog clickers make a very distinctive sound which lets you control your timing and eliminates the variation of tone in your voice due to fatigue, frustration and other factors. This is important as any inflection in your voice may impede the process of training the dog because they are very sensitive with changes in your voice, they may conceive it as negative. Moreover, with the use of dog training equipment like the dog clicker, you may effectively use the reinforcement or the reward system in training your pet.

If you are to use dog training equipment such as the clicker, you have to condition the mind of the dog to responding to it. You can use a method called operant conditioning whereas the idea is to associate a thing with the dog training equipment, for example treats in the form of food. See to it that every time the dog follows the command imposed by the dog training equipment, he perceives it as corresponding with a command with a reward. Also, it is important to associate your dog's name with something positive. Again, this may be in form of a reward or a treat. To fully get his attentions to the dog training equipment, get him used to hearing the clicks following his name, afterwards the treat. This process with of the dog training equipment won't take much time, but can be very substantial and constructive in the end.

How long to put up with his dog that bites me?

I know that I have written about this before, but I am totally at a road block. I love my boyfriend and we talk often about a future together. His dog has aggression issues and aggresively bites me when ever he feels like it. So far, in the past 5 months, he has bitten me 5 times, the last time being yesterday when he was sitting on my lap.
My BF has had a trainer over and we have been training him since January but this still continues. The trainer emailed me saying that this dog is the type that will bite when given the opprotunity. I dont want to live in a house with a biting dog for myself, my cat and my future children.
I dont know what to do as I feel like my only choice is to leave the relationship or live with this disrespectful dog. My boyfriend says he will not get rid of the dog.
What other choices do I have? What would you do?
we dont live together.

Get rid of your piece of crap boyfriend. Yup, you get to move out. I usually get a lot of thumbs down when I say this, but the reason a guy shacks up with a girl and doesn't marry her first is because he doesn't respect her.

Edit: Even if he DOES get rid of the dog, he let the dog bite you 5 times now. He should have done something about it when it first happened.

Edit again: You are at least the second girlfriend he's shacked with an didn't bother marrying first. Do you see a pattern here? He uses women who volunteer to be his free sex slave.

Does your dog engage in seemingly sweet, subtle, manipulative behavior such as nudging you for affection, forcing a ball in your lap, mouthing your hand, or pawing you when you sit on the couch? Or does he display more of an insistent, aggression dog dominance when commanding your attention?

In either event, you have a dog dominance behavior problem. Your dog seeks to control and manipulate you, and it will not become so cute over time. These dog behaviors can lead to demands that drive friends away, prevent your children from hearing the serious message you are trying to tell them, make someone trip and fall, lead to nipping or biting, and more. It is neither pleasant nor safe.

So then, how do you make Fido stop? What can you do to assert your authority and gain your leadership position over this dog dominance behavior?

First, always make your dog sit or lie down, a submissive posture, for a treat, food, or prior to going out for a walk. Make the dog wait until he is calm for ANYTHING Â… You will soon thank yourself!

Your dog should ALWAYS walk beside or behind you when on his daily outing, never in the lead. Remember the Leader-Follower Rule. Note how calm a dog is when following an owner, and how on edge he is when he is in front in the control position.

To gain your dog's full respect, your comportment and attitude must command that respect. One aid to help you exude authority in a manner the dog actually senses and smells, is your intensely positive FOCUS. Stand tall and concentrate on something that makes you feel very proud.

I think about a very unruly dog I once trained on and off leash, and the look on the owner's face when he arrived some weeks later. As he came through the wide opened doorway, upon seeing the previously wild dog seated calmly behind my friend, he exclaimed: "This cannot be the same dog!" That makes me smile, fill my lungs, and thrust my head up and shoulders square with powerful inner assurance!

Another dog training tip: If your dog is lying down in your path but not sound asleep, do NOT step over him or go around him. Instead, nudge him gently with your foot, tell him to move, or get his attention some other appropriate fashion. He has to move for you, NOT you for him! He will soon understand this without your having to do anything. Then, like my Border Collie, he will just get up and move out of the way when he senses you need to pass. Otherwise, he begins to feel in control and may also become a safety hazard, rising unexpectedly as you step over and causing you to fall.

As much fun as you may have with it, roughhousing and growly games with your dog are certainly not recommended -- especially not with young ones who have not yet learned proper relationship boundaries and protocols. Note that even older dogs can gravitate from play to serious control actions, too. I have received and seen too many accidental bites and worked with too many unbalanced dogs as a result of this! I even have a friend whose three-year-old Dalmatian had to be put down after a pattern of roughhousing with her little brother. It reached the point that the dog carried the rough control into the house, not playing any longer -- ultimately biting the child and drawing blood more than once! Let dogs roughhouse with each other.

Even games like tug-a-war between you and your dog are not good. Let dogs play it with each other, instead. Yes, that colorful rope you bought just begs you to take one end for your dog's delight. I watch my two dogs as they play this game ... and the victor gains power! It boosts his self-confidence. If you win, you lessen him in his eyes, and if you give in or simply lose hold of the rope, in his mind he has just gained power over you!

No, your dog needs to be secure and confident IN YOU and not feel competitive with you. This way, it is a win-win situation for you and your dog, and YOU can be the TOP DOG – the confident leader of the pack!

Agility training is considered a specialized area when it comes to dog training and while it may not be for every dog the majority of dog breeds can enjoy this exciting type of training. There is a variety of dog agility training equipment on the market today that can assist the owner who is interested in this form of dog training. The great thing about agility training is the fun that all dogs have doing it. There is no greater outlet for a dog than getting lots of exercise, and if they are learning at the same time it is a win-win for both dog and owner.

Before buying any agility training equipment it is a good idea to check out a training manual or check with your local agility training club to see which type of training and equipment is best suited for your particular dog. Because each breed of dog has its strengths and weaknesses it is important to set tasks that they can excel in. Every aspect of your dogs breeds abilities needs to be considered when determining not only the training methods but also the type of agility course to use.

The obstacle course is one of the agility exercises that many dogs and owners enjoy the most. It normally consists of a series of jumps, tunnels, hoops, turns, and other obstacles which the dog must be trained to navigate. If you have a breed that is naturally good at surmounting these types of obstacles you will find that they will learn to overcome any and all obstacles quickly and easily. The bond between owner and dog is further strengthened because of the communication and trust needed to successfully teach a dog to run these type of courses.

When training a dog to run an agility course it pays to make the experience as fun as possible. The more fun you have the better the experience for both you and your dog. Lots of positive reinforcement with praise is key to getting the best out of any dog. They naturally love to please and if they are having fun at the same time the rewards will be that much greater.

If you are considering dog agility training for your dog then it pays to do some up front research before purchasing any training equipment. By choosing the equipment that is best suited for your dog and the goals you have set you will soon see returns on your investment in your dog agility training equipment.

Anyone used remote trainers (electric shock collars) to condition 2 pit bulls not to fight?

I'm at my wits end with my 2 neutered female pit bulls. Suddenly, the younger (age 1 and a half) one attacks the older (age 3) one for no reason and a vicious fight ensues. I've tried everything - muzzling, more exercise, recognizing the dominance of the younger dog, asking for advice. The bottom line seems to be "crate and rotate", which is what I have been doing, but I really dislike it even besides the inconvenience. I have an electric fence on my property and that works like magic. My dogs will NOT cross their boundaries even IF they aren't wearing their collars because they've been conditioned to know that if they do, they will get a shock. I'm wondering if I'd have such sucess with remote training collars for the fighting problem. Two collars would cost about $300 to $400, so I'd sure like to hear from others who may have had real-life experience with this issue, especially with this breed, before I put out that much money for nothing.

I wouldnt recommend using a shock collar while they are fighting. It produces a zap and when the dog cries out, the other dog will take it as a sign of weakness.
Try this:
When to dogs start to get into it (like immediately) you have to become the alpha and put it in it's place.
If you are able to get them to stop (not recommended to put your hands in there but a leash or stick works). Put them both on the ground. (On their sides or backs). This is the submissive positions and in the wild, the pack leader will put the dogs on the ground if they get out of line.

Check out Ceaser Milan-that man is a genious. There are episodes that are similar to your situation and you can get some pointers from there.
Good luck and dont forget...you are the pack leader.

The use of electronic training devices has become increasingly widespread. In 2006 pet owners worldwide purchased more than 500,000 remote training collars, over 1,000,000 containment systems, and almost 900,000 bark collars.

Why the popularity? These training systems have become much more affordable, and pet owners are finding them to be a safe, effective means for controlling the various behaviors that they find unacceptable.

As sales of these products increase, so do the not so favorable opinions about them -- that they make dogs aggressive, that there is a greater chance of failure than success when using them, that the shock they deliver is painful, that they will result in significant injury to your pet.

These can all be classified as "myths", since there is very little hard data available to prove or disprove them. However, recent studies are providing results that allow for a more reasoned analysis of this technology.

Last year, one of the major manufacturers of electronic training products retained an independent laboratory to compare the level of correction produced by a pet containment system receiver to the shock produced by other common circumstances and devices. The evaluation demonstrated that the "shock" produced by a containment system is nowhere near the intensity that some people believe.

The "shock" produced by the containment system is nearly 40% less that than that one would receive from walking on carpet. (Please note that static shock will vary greatly depending on the relative humidity: the lower the humidity, the higher the shock.)

Further, this study demonstrates that the training "shock" is one-fourth the level of a cattle fence and one-twentieth the level of a stun gun, two devices to which electronic training equipment is often unfairly compared.

But even this study tells only half the story. It compared the voltage put out by these devices...the intensity. You also need to consider the duration. Reputable brands of electronic training equipment correct for only a short period of time. The brand that has the UL mark of approval on its receiver features a correction that lasts only 1/40 of a second -- less time than it takes the average person to snap their fingers.

But what this study does demonstrate is that not all "shock" is the same. And that the correction in question is not "painful," "powerful" or even "uncomfortable." "Surprising" maybe, but none of the above.

Still, every animal will react differently to the correction. So you should always approach a training situation with caution when using this kind of equipment. As is usually the case, education is the answer. When you are training a pet, you need to have as much information as possible...and a behavior management plan to support you, as you would with traditional training techniques. When looking at selecting a product select one that provides you with both instructional manuals and videos.

If you choose a product that supplies you with these necessary educational materials you will greatly increase your chances of success when attempting to improve your dog's behavior. To help demonstrate this fact let's look at a survey that was recently completed by a leading manufacturer of electronic training equipment.

This company surveyed 1,025 dog owners that had been using one of three types of electronic training equipment (remote training collar, bark control collar or containment system) for a period of not less than 90 days.

The most significant findings came as the result of asking the pet owner the following question, "Since using the electronic training product how would you describe your pet's overall behavior?" The owner was asked to respond with one of the following: a) better behaved (and specifically how), b) no change in behavior or c) worse behaved (and specifically how).

The results are staggering. Slightly over 2/3 (860 of 1,025 dog owners) responded that their dogs overall behavior had in fact improved since using the electronic equipment.

Reasons that these dogs would show an overall improvement in their behavior would include that the owners used the equipment correctly. Correct use includes spending a significant amount of time working with and socializing with your dog. When a dog receives an increase in time and attention, his behavior will usually change for the better.

This survey also helps to dispel another myth about the use of electronic training equipment - that it causes dogs to act aggressive. None of the dog owners surveyed purchased the equipment for the purpose of eliminating aggressive behavior. However, approximately 12% stated that another positive side effect of using the equipment was that their dog no longer exhibited occasional aggressive behavior that had been seen in the past. Also, of those owners stating that their dogs behavior worsened in some way since using the equipment, none reported the worsening being in the form of aggressive behavior.

Has anyone heard of this 'training system'?

http://www.thane.com/products/promos/perfectdog/perfectdog.php

Its Don Sullivan's 'The Perfect Dog". It claims that with using his techniques and the 'command collar' that you can train your dog sit, lay down and stay in as little as 5 minutes. It also says you can correct all kinds of bad behaviors as well as teach them to respect any and all boundaries that you tell them without using shock collars nor invisible fences. I was gonna enroll my dog in training next month, for the same price as this set. If it really does work, I'd do it in a heart beat. I'm skeptical though. VERY skeptical. Does anyone know who this guy is, if he's actually a good trainer and has anyone used the system before? Do you recommend it or is it just another infommercial scam?

Scam. Tha't just a plastic prong collar.

Invest the time and money in training your dog properly. As long as you have a good, experienced instructor you'll be better off having the feedback of a real person who can watch you work.

Teaching a dog to walk on a leash?

Almost a year ago I adopted a severely neglected, abused Chihuahua. It's just in the last few months that she has really started to open up and allow and actually solicit attention and such. The one thing that she refuses to do is walk on a leash. I have tried using collars, harnesses, vests, etc. but whenever I put one on her she freezes and won't move, then she ends up somehow slipping out of them. I'd really like for her to be able to enjoy the scenery and have a nice walk like the others (I always feel guilty leaving her behind). I'd also like her to walk because she is putting on some weight and I don't think it's healthy for her. I've tried leading her with treats and stuff but she just stays frozen and won't move. Any other suggestions on how to teach her to walk?

Been there done that with the same situation and this is how I delt with it!

There is a harness type lease you can buy at the pet shops, that will help with this situation and make it quicker for her to learn, I beleive that they are called No Pull Leash . They work!!! Good luck !!!

There are some tools that every trainer needs to do his job. There are a number of purposes that dog training equipment has, but in general it has specific functions to make the dog perform certain things, to get control over him or to train him faster.

1. Collar

Besides using normal training aids, a dog trainer will also use collars in the training process. There are a wide variety of types of collars, sorted by appeal, materials or their functions. If we're talking about classification by functions, collars can be spoke collars, chain collars, electronic collars, martingale collars or shock collars.

Usually, dog collars are made of nylon, leather, metal or fabric materials.

2. Harness

Something that can be used as a leash alternative, a harness is a device used for training, either replacing a dog collar or using it together with one. A harness can be used so that the pulling force is distributed more equally, so that the dog doesn't choke. A collar also brings with it the risk that the dog will slip out of it.
Dog harnesses aren't used to train a normal dog though. They're usually preferred when it comes to training assistant dogs or service dogs.

3. Leash or lead

The lead, or leash, is made usually out of rope or leather, which helps restrain or control the dog when it's attached to the collar. Some leashes are made so that they loop around the dog's neck, so the collar isn't needed. The length can also be a way to choose a leash: it can be short, very short, extended webbing leash or webbing leash.

The length matters because different training exercises will require leashes of different sizes, keeping the dog at a distance or close to you. Use long leashes for distance training or tight leashes for the best control.

4. Muzzle

If the dog has the habit of barking or biting, and you want him to stop doing it, you can use a dog muzzle. This dog equipment is very important, especially for dangerous or aggressive dogs that you want to prevent from doing any damage.
You place the muzzle on the dog's mouth, so he can't open it and bite with it. You can use dog muzzle to vary how much freedom the dog has. You can also choose one depending on its shape or material. Materials used for dog muzzles can include leather, wire, nylon or plastic.

5. Bait Pouch

The bait pouch is putting a dog treat in your pocket, and it's a method that many dog trainers use. There is a disadvantage to that though, the fact that if you take some extra time to get the reward, the purpose of giving the dog a reward is a bit lost on him.
It's recommended to buy a special bait pouch if you want to use one for training. It's just like a normal pouch, but made from canvas. It's kept at the trainer's waist, so that he can access it easily.

6. Halter

The halter is a training gear similar to a collar, and it's used by trainers to guide or train pets, making it easier to control it. It goes over the dog's muzzle and fitted to the back of his head. By pulling the head, the trainer signals the dog to change his direction.
There are plenty of types of dog training equipment, by name, construction or purpose. You can't do everything with just one type of equipment. Decide what you want it to do before you buy it.

Obedience Training Equipment

Agility class distractions?

I just brought my 1 1/2 year old siberian husky to her first agility class. First of all, she is a very well trained dog in obedience but isn't used to doing such things with other dogs around since she was trained at home by herself. When I got to the class, she was restless and would not stop pulling on the leash to get to the other dogs to play. I couldn't get her to sit, wait, or focus on anything else but the other dogs. I cannot use a pinch or choke collar because it may be dangerous on the agility equipment. I need some way to get her to pay attention to what she is doing other than the dogs around her. She turns her nose up to any treat, and my commands. I was completely embarrassed because she wouldn't listen to me or even acknowledge me. She was trained to focus on me for obedience, but it seems like she forgot everything she has been trained to do. How would I be able to train her to not pay attention to distractions and to focus on what she is doing?

If there is room, move away from the action until she can pay attention to you. Slowly move towards the other dogs until she starts to loose it, then back up to where she can pay attention. I have a very high drive Border Collie mix who is totally turned on by other dogs doing agility. He wears a Halti while we are waiting. I ask for eye contact and if he doesn't give it, gently pull his head up until he gives me eye contact, then he gets a treat. The best thing is to practice this A LOT away from agility. Go to distracting places and work away from the action, and when you can, get closer. It will take a while, but it will be worth it. Private lessons or small group(3 or less) classes work well to start. Asking to hang out and just work on attention would be another good option. Work for short periods of time too, five to 10 minutes. Put her away for 15-20 minutes then work for another five. Clean Run has a bunch of great books that can help you out. Good Luck!!

Puppy 2-3 weeks old

This is the stage where you puppy will start to respond to his environment. He will slowly start to crawl around, and recognize his "mommy" and "siblings". Remember that before you ever start your dog obedience training, your puppy's dog mom will start by teaching him doggy behavior.

Your Puppy At 3-4 Weeks

Your puppy will go through the sensory development stage. He will know his surroundings and recognize you and your family members. Try and be calm and not too loud around your puppy at this stage. Loud noises, lots of activity could have an impact on your puppy at this point in his development. Your puppy will learn to be a dog now, so do not remove your puppy from itÂ’s four legged mommy and siblings. His doggy mommy will need her own time to train her puppy.

Your Puppy at 4-7 Weeks

At this stage your puppy learns manners from its doggy mother. He will learn all about the leader of the pack at this stage. It is at this stage that you can start to wean your puppy.

Start handling the puppies at this point, but, not for more then about 15 minutes at a time. Puppies that are removed to early can have "dog" development problems. Your puppy will need to stay with its doggy family till 7-8 weeks of age. This will give him optimum dog development time.

Make sure you let your puppy become a "dog".

Your Puppy at 8 weeks to 12 weeks

Your puppy is learning about family life in your home. This is NOT the time for heavy duty training, or serious corrections. This is the time to gently start to teach your dog to fit into his family.

His bladder and bowel control will increase at this stage. More free time for you! You can begin to train your puppy for some easy commands like: come, sit, stay, and down. Leash training can also start at this stage. Do not isolate your dog because this is the time he learns how to interact in your environment.

Your puppy at 12-16 weeks, the rebellious age

This is the age where your puppy gets his own mind, ideas and he will try to outsmart you.

He will start play biting, and you will need to stop this right at the beginning.

This is a good time to play with your puppy. But, do not play rough games and teach your puppy to be rough with humans. He will believe that "winning" at these games means he has become the dominant in the human pack.

Your puppy at 4-6 Months

This is the stage where your puppy will test you to your limits. Be firm, but gentle! He will also go through that horrid teething stage. Do some internet searching on this subject for tools to help you both get through this intact. Frozen bones will sooth him during this period.

Teach him at this point to "play" gently with the kids. Never, ever let your puppy off a leash near traffic or near any place where he could get hurt. He may come back to you 3 times, but the fourth he WONÂ’T!

This is the time for neutering or spaying, if that is the route you would like to go.

6-18 Months – The growing up to adulthood months

He is really learning everything YOU choose for him to learn. So, take advantage of this time period. What you teach today you will not have to correct tomorrow.

Always be realistic. Teach yourself how to train your dog. There are good internet courses available. Teach your dog to be sociable also, take him to a training class to learn this.

And, do seek the advice of a dog professional for training and dog equipment. This is very important.

What kinds of practicing can I do at home for my agility dog while it's snowing outside?

I have some makeshift weave poles and hurdles outside as well as a pause box and table. What can I do indoors though? I go to an agility club but only can go once a week. She's going for her UKC III title and her basic AKC titles. Thanks.

Tons of things.

1. You have a bed? Well, that makes a great pause table to practice the up, off and holding a sit-stay or down-stay. My dog used to release early if I moved. So one winter we worked extensively--I'd send him to the bed, put him in a down-stay and then shift my position before releasing him.

2. Lots of things to do with just one jump. Get the Susan Garrett video on working with one jump.

3. And while we're speaking of Susan Garrett, get her video on crate games. It's about a lot more than just crates. And it's invaluable for trialing.

4. Work on shaping. This improves focus and control. And shaping is ideal for indoor work. You just need a clicker and a bunch of weird stuff to work with.

5. Do tricks. Silvia Trkman of Slovenia argues that most of the "agility training" she does with her dogs is just doing tricks in her apartment. You learn how your dog learns, most of the tricks become invaluable agility warmups, your learns you're the source of fun and good treats--what's not to like.

6. Strength and balance training. Take stairs. Put a treat on each step, alternating sides (left/right). This increases your dog's awareness of her hind legs and improves strength. Get a conditioning ball, put your dog on it and then work one leg--builds strength and balance. Create a buja board to improve your dog's balance and comfort with movement.

7. Contact training. Get a board and work on your 2o2o (or whatever your contact system is). If you've always wanted to do a running contact, if you start working intensively now with the board, you "might" be ready by April--maybe.

8. Flatwork/shadow handling. Practice front and rear crosses with your dog. Do inside and outside circles.

9. Distance work. "Send" your dog up the stairs by giving the command and then tossing a piece of string cheese to the landing. Have your dog heel and walk to a trashcan or easy chair and give your dog the "out" command.

All of this stuff should keep you busy until about August.

Dog agility is a sport in which handler directs a dog off-leash through obstacle course in a race for time and accuracy. Obstacle course consist of various tunnels, jumps, a tire jump, weave poles, a pause table where the dog must sit or lie down for a count of five seconds, and obstacles that the dog must climb. The first dog agility performance was as entertainment at the Crufts dog show in 1978 and became a success that is now gaining popularity worldwide. It demonstrates dog’s ability to be versatile, quick and agile. All types and breeds of dogs can join in this sport. Even children and puppies are encouraged to participate in this event. If you do not want to compete and want to join the agility just for fun, you can do so in non-competitive agility classes.

In an agility training course, training obedience is the basic key. Dogs are trained to be obedient to their owner or the handler. The dogs must know and obey the different commands such as sit, halt or stop, lay down and other commands that can be used during the agility course. Dog agility equipment is necessary during the training. In purchasing dog agility equipment, there are things that you have to consider. First, you have to consider the dog. Use appropriate equipment for your dog’s size, breed, and age. Second, adjustable equipment is recommended to be used on your dog, this way; you can adjust it to the level of training. Go for portability of the equipment. If do not want to spend most of your time assembling the course, choose dog agility equipment that can be put together easily or already assembled.

Consult a veterinarian before starting the agility training to ensure that your dog is in good physical health and have the necessary vaccines to participate in the training. Making sure that your dog has the strength and endurance to overcome one obstacle after another. Dog agility training helps develop the bonding between the pet owner or handler and the dog. Talk to your dog and offer treats for an accomplished command or task.

shock collar?

what brand shock collar do you prefer to use?

Why do people make judgments about shock collars when they are ignorant on how to use them. It is not negative training. if you think it is then when you put a choke collar on your dog or put a leash on your dog you are doing the same thing. using a chock collar you teach the dog to turn the stimulation off. if you put the probes on your hand you can barely feel the stimulation. it is not negative training. a shock collar is nothingn more than a remote control leash which allows you to correct your dog when he is 300 yards away from you...

ive been learning to be an animal trainer and have been intrested in training for a long time now.
i aggree with you about most people not knowing how to use them propley, which has caused the bad press about them.
yes they do get results fast. it does come under the remote punishment section of operant conditioning. and works by giving the animal discomfut to stop a behaviour(not pain when used propley) but i wouldnt use one as i prefur to use positive renforcement (giving the animal something it enjoys) it dose take longer i know.

if people researched in to training and devices they would understand better. but if i had to chose one it would be one with lower settings. it all comes down to your own training methods.

Where can I get agility dog equipment? Like is there any in a pet store or superstore?

You can often make acceptable training equipment at home. Google plans for each structure you want, for example, "agility A frame plans", and you can save a fortune making your own.

Weave Poles are the hardest event for a dog to master, so most trainers have their own set at home. The method you use to train your dog is entirely up to you, but I recommend you try a couple of different ones to see which is the best for you and your dog.

Through the years a number of weave pole training methods have been introduced, Channel Weaves, Weave-A-Matic or WAM and Weave Pole Guide Wires, all of which produce various results in individual dogs. The end result depends solely on the amount of time and energy the trainer is willing to invest.

Channel Weave Method

The "channel method" is gaining popularity. This is a great method for those dogs that just can't grasp the concept of the agility weave poles. Two parallel rows of weave poles are put side by side, but offset in such a way that the dog has a wide square center "channel" to run down. The poles rotate on the base, so you start with a channel and then slowly swivel the poles towards the center as your dog improves. At first your dog is not weaving he is just running through to the other end like an open tunnel. By slowly, inch-by-inch, bringing the poles closer together, your dog will begin to weave without even knowing it! If you are patient and don't rush the channel process, your dog will come to "understand" weaving and be less apt to miss poles in the future!

Weave-A-Matic or WAM Method

This method is very similar to the Channel method. The main difference is, instead of a wide square channel at the base of the weaves, there is a narrower "V" channel your dog will have to run through. As with the Channel method, the poles are slowly brought back to vertical as your dog learns what he is suppose to do. The WAM method is fine for most dogs, but some might feel a bit claustrophobic in the narrower space and not perform as well.

Weave Pole Guide Wires

Weave Pole Guide Wires will help if your dog is having some trouble learning the Agility Weaves or is just starting to learn.

Guide Wires are an essential part of the training, making it easier, faster, more fun and a lot less frustrating for both you and your dog. The Weave Pole Guide Wires simply show your dog the correct way through the weaves by creating a "tunnel" effect through the event. With the wires at eye level for your dog, he will naturally try to avoid them, taking the path of least resistance thus learning to weave without realizing he is learning to weave. Once the Weave Guides are removed he will continue to weave naturally, but, if needed, the Guide wires can be easily brought back for a quick refresher.

Stick-in-the-ground Weave Poles

If you only own a set of Stick-in-the-Ground Weave Poles, you can try all of the above training methods. This set comes with a "spacer stick" to get the correct spacing of the poles, so, you could, with a bit of work make a square channel. With a lot less work you could use the WAM method just by tilting the poles and, of course, the Weave Pole Guide Wires will fit on these or any set of weave poles you own.

The advantage to using Stick-in-the-Ground Weave Poles is, there is no base, so the dog has one less distraction. The disadvantages are, it takes a bit longer to set the event up and it's not as easy to move it.

Any of these methods, in the right hands will produce results. It really comes down to what works for you and your dog, if you find one method isn't working, try a different approach. Sometimes all it takes is a change in routine. Dogs are really no different than people, they all learn at different speeds and sometimes, even by different methods. In the end, it's your patience, persistence and praise that will determine whether your dogs succeeds or fails.

IT IS ALL UP TO YOU!

Agility, more than just good for your dog!
