Over the last several months my friend Wayne and I have had several discussions centered upon defeating the effects of EMF from a nuclear blast. As we all are aware these EMF signals are suppose to affect anything that has electronics in it from small radios to your automobile.

It really does not matter if you have your radio plugged into the electrical outlet it would still be "Zapped" by the EMF. The EMF from nuclear blasts travels through the air and would destroy many of the static sensitive devices which are in the radio circuit boards. The same is true of your car. Most of the modern automobiles have an assortment of electronic components in them from the ignition systems to the fuel system. Theory has it that none of these modern vehicles will work after a nuclear blast.

In the military when I was in the electronics field we would have a specific room where we would repair certain pieces of equipment. This room would prevent any signals from escaping as well as entering the immediate confines. We referred to the room as a "screen room" but in reality it was nothing more then a large faraday cage. For those who are not familiar with faraday cages they are metal enclosures which capture the EMF signals and route them to a ground connection rather then through the electronic components.

I figure that since we are concerned about specific pieces of equipment functioning after an EMF situation then perhaps we should also consider the possibility of using a faraday cage. We could use it to protect our lanterns and radios and any other electronic equipment which would fit within the confines of the designated space. Lanterns by there very nature may make it without the protection of the cage however the electronic equipment would require some sort of faraday cage in order to survive.

If you happen to be outside of the blast zone then you may not necessarily be affected by the EMF. Many of the current AM radios have what is known as a ferrite core which serves as their antenna. These cores would also pick up any of the induced EMF surges and route them into the electronic circuitry of the radios. These signals may very well be strong enough to actually blow the components in the radio itself even if it were not actually turned on.

Now here is one idea that I would like to present for consideration. Suppose that you take a metal can of some sort that is a bit larger then your radio that you wish to protect. On this can connect a bonded ground strap and secure that to a good earth ground. In this way the metal can should by all respects absorb the EMF signal and properly channel it to the ground connection in place of going through the radio. In theory this would be the same as having a copper cage created with wire mesh and having a ground strap connected to it.

The particular type of EMP which more then likely would be employed to damage America would likely be the HAEMP burst or the High Altitude Electro Magnetic Pulse. The enemy could very well employ about 4 to 6 high altitude bursts in their efforts to produce enough EWMF to effect our equipment. This would be enough to deactivate most of our power grids as well as the large number of our communications systems which would include landline phones and cell phones.

Lastly, I would like to enlarge this idea to include a garage or steel building. Why could we not create a series of ground connections attached to a metal type building which is large enough to house a vehicle in it. This would perhaps afford enough protection to save our bug out vehicle for our needed departure should the time come. I look forward to hearing from those people who have their own opinions concerning my theories.

Can You Help Me with my Physics homework?

A particular electronic-code lock provides over 500 billion combinations. Moreover, it can sustain an electric shock of 1.25 x 105V. Suppose this potential difference is applied across a series connection of the following resistors: 11.0kΩ, 34.0kΩ, and 215kΩ. What is the equivalent resistance for the circuit?

A light bulb in a camper’s flashlight is labeled 2.4V, 0.70A. Find a) the resistance of the light bulb, If three of these light bulbs are connected in parallel to a standard C size 1.5V battery, find both b) the equivalent resistance of the entire circuit, and c) the current.

Transrapid, the world’s first train using magnetic field levitation, is designed to glide 1.0 cm above the track at speeds of up to 450 km/h. Suppose a charged particle with a charge of 12 x 10-9C and a speed of 450 km/h moves at a right angle to a 2.4T magnetic field. What is the magnetic force acting on the particle?

1) In a series, the equivalent resistance is the sum of all the resistances. so Req = 11+34+215 = 260kΩ

2a) V=IR, so the resistance of the light bulb is
R = 2.4/0.7 = 3.43Ω

2b) In parallel,
1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3. Plug in 3.43 into R1,R2,R3
Req = 1.14Ω

2c) V = IR
I = V/R = 1.5/1.14 = 1.32 A

3) F = qvBsinΘ
Convert 450 km/h into m/s >> 125 m/s
F = 12E-9 * 125 * 2.4 * sin90 = 3.6E-6 N

when crate is not used for training is it still okay?

Ok I have a couple of questions about keeping dogs in crates....

1. Most websites talk about crates as a training tool...does that mean at some point they should not be used anymore w/ a dog like once it's trainined?

1. How much crate time is too much? Like I mean how many hours per day? All I've heard is that it shouldn't be for more than 6-8 hours at at a time, does that mean after that the dog can go back in for another 6 hours? How much total per day is too much?

2. Can keeping a dog in a crate be harmful to it? What are the negative side effects, I mean mentally and socially?

3. If I kept my dog crated too long, could the spca take him away?

4. My dog tries to run out of the front door anytime someone comes over, is there a way to train him to not do that?

5. Has anyone tried those electronic collars that keep the dog in a certain area? Are those okay to use? Better or worse than a crate?

1) Even though my puppies (now 11 months) are completely housebroken, I do still crate them when I am working during the day because they cannot be trusted by themselves in the house yet. It is a safer option for them and for me. Once the chewing phase is over, I will slowly get them adjusted to having more freedom.

I also still use crates to help prevent bloat (I have large breeds). After each meal I crate them for an hour so they relax and aren't tempted to romp around and exercise or drink water.

2) It is recommended that you don't crate a dog for longer than his/her age. For example, if your puppy is 3 months old, you shouldn't leave him/her in the crate for more than 3 hours at a time. However, I would not recommend leaving a puppy/dog in a crate for longer than 3-5 hours at a time at any age. I know it isn't always possible, but that is my personal opinion.

3) As long as you don't keep your dog in a crate 24/7 they are not allowed to remove him from your home. SPCA can investigate any reports, but most likely will not take your dog unless they are in their crate for lonnnng periods of time, you allow your dog to urinate and have bowel movements and let him lay it in all day, etc. I would like to hope you wouldn't do such a thing anyway!

4) YES! Keep his leash on and DO not open the door until he is sitting politely (and calmly!). It may take several minutes (and several times!!), but do not open the door until he is exibiting a proper, desired behavior. Have friends come over and help you out! Have them ring the door bell/knock and practice sitting and staying with your dog. Use plently of praise and treats to reinforce the behavior! It is important that YOU don't get too excited when someone comes to the door either... dogs react off your energy icon smile Training Electronic

5) I am against any type of shock collars, again, personal opinion.

Hope this helps!

If you are having trouble training your dog using conventional positive feedback methods, you may want to consider using an electronic dog training collar. The first electronic dog training collars came out about 20 or 30 years ago. They were too powerful to be used on smaller dogs and didn't have shock level adjustments. Professionals used them to train hunting dogs, for the most part. But modern electronic collars offer much better control and safety. Provided they are used properly, modern electronic dog training collars can be used effectively on almost any dog. There are two basic varieties of modern electronic dog training collars; the bark collar and the beeper collar.

A bark collar, as the name implies, is used to control your dogs' barking. The idea is if your dog starts barking, the collar will trigger an electrical shock through the collar to your dogs' neck. Hopefully this stops the barking. The collar works automatically, whether you are there or not, so you can be confident your dogs barking is being controlled all the time, night or day. Another advantage with this type of collar is the behavior feedback to your dog is immediate. It is not unusual for a dog owner to come home from work and find the neighbors up in arms about the dog's barking. But without a bark collar it would be too late to teach your dog that what he did is wrong.

Your dog won't be able to associate your anger with the barking he did 3 or 4 hours ago. For the most part, your dog can wear a bark dog training collar all the time. You still have to take the time to recharge the battery in the shock unit, but you pretty much have total 24-hour-a-day control on your dogs barking. Bark collars are generally the least expensive type of electronic dog training collars. Except for the battery charger, everything is all in one unit. The microphone to pick up barking noises from your dog and the shock box with level adjustment are both attached directly to the collar. The electrical shock is delivered to your dogs' neck through a pair of metal electrodes that are on the inside of the collar. You can usually get electrodes in several different lengths to best suit the thickness of your dog's fur.

Beeper collars are manually controlled using a remote transmitter. They are generally more expensive and sophisticated compared to bark collars because they include a separate, hand held radio transmitter that sends a signal to a radio receiver on the dog training collar. They have the advantage of allowing you to control more than just your dogÂ’s barking. If, for example, your dog jumps up on people this type collar may be the perfect solution to let your dog know about his bad behavior. Of course, the disadvantage with this collar is you have to be there with the transmitter in your hand at all times and push the button at the right time.

Of course a big danger when using an electronic dog training collar is setting the shock level too high. You want to get your dogs attention with the shock and control their behavior. But clearly you don't want your dog in excruciating pain every time the collar is triggered. It is important to use the lowest possible shock setting that gets the job done. If your dog is yelping in pain, or panics when the shock collar triggers, then the setting is obviously too high and needs to be lowered.
