Why does my schnauzer dog lick our fake leather chairs?

I have a pure bred male schnauzer dog, and he is very strange. For many years, he has had an odd habit of standing next to my fake leather furniture, and licking it, and has worn away my furniture in doing so. And I have no idea why! Is my dog just a complete oddball, or is there a reason why he might be doing this? And is it bad for him?

My Chihuahuas do the same thing. They seem to go into a licking frenzy, licking the chairs and hands, even our arms and face. The don't stop even when you push them away. My sister and i call them "licky fits"

I just started clicker training. How do I know if my dog knows what the click means?

I don't know of any way to tell if my 6 year old pug Dudley knows what the click of the clicker means. Is there any way to tell? Also, I'd like some tips to help me get started with clicker training.

You will know that he clicker is "charged" when you click and your dog turns around and looks at you or perks his ears and shows interest.

Hey there! I suggest you don't use a shock collar for your lab because it will just induce pain in him. If you really care for him, you should use more humane and pet-friendly collars, which utilize harmless sprays instead of electric shock. There are a lot of good collars out there, which can help you train your dogs painlessly and effectively. For example, there are anti-bark training collars (e.g. Gentle Spray Citronella Anti-Bark collar) that use spray technology to control your dog's nuisance barking. I don't know if these products are already available in the Philippines but I know you can order them online. Hope I'm able to help.

All dogs need training so that they learn to behave appropriately, especially in a family environment. To this end, training collars have been created to help you with this process, and they have proven to be very effective in this role. As with many things however, in the wrong hands, dog training collars can be used to hurt and abuse dogs, so you need to understand how they work and what they do.

The prong collar looks like a medieval torture device, but is actually one of the gentler training collars being investigated here. Care should also be taken bot to pull the head to hard, because the dog could suffer injuries to the neck or back.

The choke collar is one of those items that can raise some people's hackles. Those that like them point to how effective they are in controlling a dog. Those that don't like them, would say that the collars are inhumane. The answer to this probably lies in the people who use the collars. Used correctly, choke collars can be very effective. Used in an inappropriate manner, the choke collar can be quite brutal.

Correct use of a choke collar starts with correct fitting. They work by tightening around the dog's throat when the leash is pulled. Equally, the tightness should be released when the trainer eases up on the leash, but if the collar does not fit correctly, this might not happen resulting in undue distress to the animal. If your dog is one that continually pulls on the leash, then the choke collar is probably not the right collar to use.

One of the newest forms of dog collar are the electronic one's. They are considered to be a very humane way to train a dog, but equally can be abused in the wrong hands.

The electronic dog collars work by allowing trainers to give dogs small electric shocks via a remote control to control the behaviour of the dog. How much of a shock the dog gets is entirely in the hands of the trainer, so in good hands, the electronic dog trainer can be very flexible and very effective. As a rule of thumb, the shock that is applied should be just enough to make the dog's ears twitch, but obviously the amount of electricity involved will depend on the size of the dog. In any case however, if the dog cries out when the electricity is applied, then the setting is too high. Once again, this type of collar is only really suitable for experienced trainers.

How do you train a 1 yr old dog not to bark, dig and check up things when they've had no prior training?

I have a 1 yr old golden lab that i received as a give-away and she appears to have no prior training. She has started to tear up EVERYTHING and runs away at night, but returns in the morning. She has started to bark whenever a car drives by, whenever someone walks by, and sometimes for no appartent reason at all. She is a very lovable dog, stays with me whenever I'm outside with her and loves to go on walks and is very well behaved when we are out, BUT when I'm not watching her....SHE'S OUT OF CONTROL. You have asked some very good questions that will take a long time to answer. First of all, a one year old golden retriever is going to need LOTS of exercise. If she is bored, she is going to cause trouble to make life more fun for her. Throw the ball, run with her, play with her. Have scheduled play times just to wear her out. A tired dog is a content dog. she may be able to run miles a day. Invest in a bike and allow her to run along side you IF YOU CAN DO THIS SAFELY. I used to roller blade with my dog but I was a very good roller blader! She needs a job and a good set of rules. In order to do this effectively, YOU NEED HELP! You need to get her enrolled in dog obedience classes. You need to learn about dog behavior yourself by talking with someone interested in behavior or a pet behaviorist or investing in some books. I like positive reinforcement using clicker training. Get some references from your veterinarian. She is probably due for some vaccines at 1 year old. Also, please make sure she is spayed. If she is wandering, pretty soon you are going to have puppies. She is more likely to stay home if she is spayed. Barking is a normal dog behavior but there are ways to help tone it down. You want to teach her to bark on command. When she has this down, you can teach her to stop barking on command. You also want to teach her to sit and stay during situations that are going to rial her up, such as someone ringing the doorbell. All of this can be taught by going to dog obedience. what is a goood way to train a 5 month puppy to walk on leash?

I am 100 pounds, the puppy is already at 70lbs.
Yes- the puppy is a large breed dog. She keeps pulling and I cannot walk with her at all. I am out of breath and my backs and legs are aching after trying to walk. Thus, I need solid advice.

The best way to train a puppy on a leash is to keep control of the situation at all times. Whenever the pup starts jumping around or wants to run off, STOP where you are. Don't take another step. Tell the dog to "heel" and direct her back to your side. As soon as the dog settles down, praise her and start walking again. If she tries to take off STOP again, give her the heel command, and direct her back to your side. If her misbehavior on the leash continues for more than 15 minutes, say "no walks", turn around and go back home. (Continue to STOP walking any time she tries to bolt.)

Don't hit her or yell at her. This will just make "walking" painful, aggravating and frightening for her. Just tell her "no walks" and go back home. Never allow her to drag you around.

If you consistently use this STOP technique, the dog will soon learn that misbehaving on her walks makes the walk end, and cuts off her time outside with you.

All responsible dog owners need a leash when taking your dog for a walk. In many cases a proper leash is used at home especially if your dog is aggressive towards friends, strangers other family members and or pets.

Several options are available depending on your needs. They should fit correctly and be adjusted for comfort while wearing the leash. Always make them wear a collar and leash in public places for safety with the ID and rabies tags, just in case they get loose.

When the collar and leash is new try it inside first, then in the yard if you have one followed by short public strolls and observe behavior carefully for a few days. If your dog gets loose and injures someone or another animal often law suits follow, NOT GOOD! That's why the correct collar and leash is critical. Don't be tempted if their pulling you around, this is a common trap many folks fall into after nearly having their arm yanked out of its socket.

Many leash and collar options are available now using more advanced technology. The chest leash offers better control, the retraceable leashes are popular now but can still be a problem if you let your dog have to much of a lead always use caution as sudden excitement can cause trouble. A shorter, maybe 6 foot lead is advisable.

Collar options:

In the old days and even now, dogs were trained primarily with choke chain collars and while this is a tool option it is not considered the best choice nowadays. There are alternative choices we have today for training dogs, like head halter collars and no pull halters each having it's devoted followers as does the simple buckle collar.

Controversy surrounds another type of training collar and it has been deemed by many as being cruel and inhumane. This type collar is better known as the prong collar. It looks like a dungeon torture chamber device, but it is really a kinder, gentler tool for many dogs and helps stop your dog from pulling your arm off. It is not right for all dogs, but it works quite well on anxious, strong or dogs that seem to have a high endurance for pain.

Prong collars are often the most misunderstood of the training options available today. They are not recommended for daily use and are not designed for very aggressive dogs. They are too hard on dogs that act scared or show fear once outside their comfort zone. This collar is not for young pups, however they are often used carefully by expert trainers for older pups.

The pinch or prong collar is made of interlocked metal links, each with two blunt prongs that pinch the dog's neck skin when the collar is tugged on. They pinch similar to you pinching your own skin. They press evenly around the neck and they will not penetrate or break the skin.

Some companies now have rubber tips, in my experience they reduce efficiency. Your dog needs to feel the pointed prongs and the rubber simply acts as padding thereby stopping the prongs from doing their job. Putting rubber tips on the prongs means they are too sharp to begin with (test a metal one before buying with your own finger tips) FYI if the rubber tip comes off you may hurt your dog.

Prong/pinch collars are not for daily use and should only be used a few times for training purposes mostly. Although for more hard headed dogs it often takes a little longer. Remain calm yet assertive, and consistent because typically dogs are just a mirror our own emotions and actions.

Often trainers only use the pinch/prong collar on large dominant breeds, but the choices of course are made by the owner and the dogs personal relationship, show respect and your dog will give respect. Prong collars are not status symbols, or jewelry and should not be used as such.

Always set your dog up for success, this helps build confidence, and the rewards are a calm submissive state which allows you to live in harmony and peace with your best friend.

Well, this is actually a different situation than most may have. This dog, we've just rescued from being put down at a kill shelter, has apparently been spoiled like crazy, even though it ahd never been indoors and had never had a bath in 6 years. Still, it must have gotten lots of attention or something because everyone will be sleeping at night and all of a sudden the basset hound will start barking at 4 in the morning or 5 in the morning wanting attention. It doesn't know when to stop. It'll do it for hours. Everyone has said to ignore it and that giving in is the WORST thing to do because it'll think that by barking it will get it's way. So someone insisted a no bark collar.

Sure, doesn't mean it's any good. There are alternatives. ANYBODY can slap 'PRO' in front of their name. Remember, you don't NEED schooling to become a dog trainer.

Training a dog is as important as feeding it. The fact that having a pet is a responsibility cannot be overemphasized. The owner must establish a good relationship with her dog. And the best way to establish this desired good relationship is to conduct dog training. Training a dog must become a regular activity. And in order to get the best out of dog training, the owner, who is also the dog trainer, must know the basics of different kinds of training.

Kinds of Dog Training Methods

The methods of training dogs are based on the way the trainer reinforces the pet's behavior. The reinforcement can be positive and this is done by giving rewards. The reinforcement can be negative and this is accomplished by giving corrections. Or the reinforcement can be neither positive nor negative and this is carried out by using a neutral sound, such as a click. The trainer can use all three kinds of reinforcement in various situations.

Rewards

The goal of positive reinforcement is to encourage the repetition of a certain behavior. For example, when the dog trainer gives the command "sit," and the dog actually sits, the trainer can immediately give the reward. There are many forms of rewards. The most common form is the dog treat. But in the absence of a dog treat, the trainer can use other forms such as verbal praise, an affectionate rub, and the dog toy.

Corrections

The goal of negative reinforcement is to make the pet discontinue a specific behavior. For example, when the dog is given the command to sit and he does not sit or even barks, the trainer can correct the behavior by physically holding the dog and making it sit, while verbally repeating the command. The theory is that the dog will associate the command with the position that it is being forced into. Similar to rewards, corrections may also come in different forms. It can be a verbal "No!" that will signal the dog that its owner is not pleased. Or the correction can be very physical such as the use of electric shock collars. For example, if the dog is not allowed to enter a specific room, the collar will send an electric shock if the dog crosses the threshold towards this room. Some dog trainers, however, do not approve of electric shock collars. They believe that the best dog training methods need not involve anything that will give pain.

Clicks

A click is a neutral sound. But the variations of it can be used to make the pet understand that a certain behavior is desirable and another behavior is not welcome. The major advantage of the use of clicks in dog training is that the dog trainer need not physically hold the dog. This kind of reinforcement is the preferred method of many professional dog trainers. These trainers claim that clicking is efficient and flexible.

Once the dog owner is familiar with the different methods of training dogs, the next step is to decide which kind of dog training will be carried out first. Some of the popular kinds of dog training are dog agility training, dog potty training, dog house training, and dog obedience training. These can be carried out one by one or simultaneously.

One of the most discussed issues in relation to dog ownership is the issue of house training. Those dog owners, who fail to house train their puppies effectively, do so because they fail to pick up on the signals their puppy is giving them, or they are not consistent in teaching when and where their puppy should relieve himself.

House training your puppy can be relatively stress free provided you commit yourself to following a plan of training. Lets us look now at a simple, yet tried and tested method of house training your puppy.

The plan I use for housetraining my puppies includes management, observation, opportunity and reward.

The first rule towards success is to manage your puppy's movements around your home, in this way he is less likely to sneak of and relieve himself in other areas of the house when you are not watching him. Use baby gates across the doors in your house, or a crate to hold your puppy when you can't watch him, and the chances of success will be far greater.

Dogs are creatures of habit, so take advantage of this natural trait by using the same toilet area. A small area in your garden would ideal, however, if you live in an apartment, some old news papers, or other absorbent material placed down regularly in the same place will do just as good.

Your chances of success in housetraining your puppy will be much greater if you learn to watch for the signs that tell you your puppy needs to go. This will include him running around in short circles sniffing the ground, and whimpering. When you see your puppy doing this, you will need to act fast. Pick your puppy up and take him immediately to his toilet area, place him on the ground and stay with him until he has relieved himself. Encourage him to relieve himself in a gentle voice, some people use a word such as ‘get busy' or something similar, do this and it wont be long before your puppy is relieving himself on demand!.

Take your puppy to his toilet area throughout the day, especially when he has had something to eat or drink, following a session of play, or when he has just woken up from a period of sleep.

In the early stages, go over the top when your puppy has done what is required of him, give him plenty of praise, food treats, and maybe play a game with him.

One important thing to remember about housetraining your puppy is that puppies have very short memories indeed, and there will be times when your puppy will relieve himself in places around your home, where he is not expected to. When this happens, don't become angry with him, pick him up straight away if he has only just started, and take him to his toilet area. In this instance you can use the word NO, to let your puppy know that he is relieving himself in the wrong place, but do so in a calm and neutral tone, never shout at him. If however, your are sure your puppy has learned where he should go to relieve himself, and you catch him in the act of relieving himself somewhere else in the house, then give one sharp clap of your hand or a sharp NO, and your puppy will soon get the message.

If you find that your puppy has relieved himself out of your sight, never punish him, as your puppy will have no memory of his transgression. Puppies and also older dog's, do not have the ability to use logic as we can, their concentration is mainly in the moment, therefore, if you punish your puppy for something he done earlier, he will only connect it with what he is doing at that moment you punish him. To continue to do this on a regular basis could cause your puppy to become confused, and mistrustful of you.

To recap then, use the same area for your puppy to relieve himself. Watch for the warning signs, telling you your puppy is about to relieve himself. When your puppy has done what you have asked of him, give him plenty of praise, and rewards. Take your puppy to his toilet area throughout the day and wait with him until he has relieved himself. Never punish your puppy for making a mess out of your sight, however, if he is in the middle of relieving himself and he has learned where he should go, then a firm NO, or sharp clap of your hands, should help him get the message. Remember, manage your puppy's movements, watch him closely signs of him wanting to relieve himself, give him plenty of opportunity to go to his toilet area throughout the day, and give him plenty of rewards and praise when he has done what is required of him. Use this formula consistently, and it won't be too long before you have yourself a housetrained puppy.

Does my plan for potty training puppy sound like it'd work?

I plan to crate train puppy.
but when we go outside i think i want to put pee pads on certain areas since i heard the smell attracts the puppy?

Pee pads don't really work at all. Your dog will pee wherever it decides to pee. Just make sure he understands that he's a good boy for going OUTSIDE.

Does anyone know of a good DVD about dog training?

I am planning on getting a dog, but I've never had one before and I don't know the first thing about training. I want to train it so it doesn't end up like my cousin's dog who jumps all over people and barks at everything. I want my dog to be my buddy so please hook me up with some sort of DVD to give me the basics of training my new dog right.

Cesar Millan has several videos on being the pack leader which is a good place to start. Sign up for obedience classes when you get your puppy, read all you can on your breed of dog so you know what to expect. There are a ton of books on training i.e. "Dog tricks for Dummies"

Being your dogs pack leader is the first place to start, dogs don't respect you if you aren't their leader. giving your dogs rules, boundaries and limitations, not allowing them to do anything they want, giving the dog structure and a strict schedule helps also. But definitely training classes that way you have hands on experience with a professional trainer who can correct you as you go along is the best place to start.

If your cousins dog jumps all over people then he has obviously learned that jumping gets him attention, even negative attention (down, off, go away) is attention. Remember reward the behavior you want (treats or praise) and ignore the behavior you don't want. Always give affection or attention at the right time will make your dog associate the good behavior with the affection, giving affection at the wrong time can make your dog associate it with bad behavior.

Remember whatever behavior gets them attention they will repeat so understand when to give attention and affection and learn when not to.

Watch "The Dog Whisperer" on Friday nights on the National Geographic channel and "It's Me or The dog" on Animal Planet, both excellent trainers will show you how to train and correct problem behavior as it arises.

While some people prefer getting cute, huggable, and adorable puppies, other people like getting a full grown dog instead. Older dogs tend to be more mature and perhaps better companions, the best friend that a human would need.

However, some people have qualms about getting an older dog because of the common notion that people cannot teach old dogs new tricks, especially potty training. But this is not actually the case, older dogs can still be potty trained with some important things in mind.

Here are some tips for potty training an older dog:

1. When potty training an older dog, your focus should be teaching the dog to eliminate outside, instead of teaching it not to eliminate inside. It is easier to teach an older dog to DO something instead of NOT DOING something.

If the dog already has an old habit of doing it inside, it would be hard to focus too much on eliminating that habit. It is rather easier to help it learn a better alternative to an old bad behavior.

2. Select a spot where you want the dog to do its business, such as a small corner in the lawn. It would be easier to potty train an older dog, if you are consistent about where you want it to poop. Going to the same place, over and over again, would help the dog learn the right place faster. It also helps if you do not clean the spot much until your dog learns to go there when it needs to go potty.

3. Use the same words in referring to potty. An older dog might get confused if you use different phrases to mean the same thing. When you want it to go potty, use the exact same phrase so that it would somehow become like a command to do the behavior you want it to do.

4. Remove every trace of potty accident inside the house. Dogs' sense of smell are very keen and the smell of urine or excrement in your house might make it think that it is the place to go potty. Use a deodorizing cleaning solution to eliminate odors that might stick to your floors and carpets.

5. Keep your dog's sleeping area as tight as comfortably possible. Dogs do not want potty in their sleeping quarters and by keeping the area just enough for it to sleep and, maybe, turn around, there would be no space for it to go potty. Ever morning, when the dog wakes up, take it to its regular potty place so that it would do its business there.

6. Lessen your dog's food and water intake before it sleeps. This prevents accidents from happening because when your dog is full of water or food while sleeping, it might not have the capacity to control the call of nature.

7. Make it easy for your dog to go outside through a doggie door or leaving the back door open. If this is impractical in your area, leave a bell for your dog to reach. Take the dog out each time it rings the bell so that it would know that ringing is a signal for going out.

Whoever says you cannot teach your older dog new tricks might just be too lazy. Potty training an older dog is indeed possible if you know these tips and if you just have the right amount of patience.
