Grooming shears? Good brands and what length?

All I have for scissors is a crappy four inch pair. I need some good ones, so that I can scissor work my schnauzer and shih tzu. And also trim between my aussies toes.

You'll need a couple pair, actually -
don't bother pining away for the $200 ones - they're so sharp, you'll cut something off that isn't fur before you know it!

A pair of decent straight shears like Geib Gators are not too expensive, and useful for lots of body work. They're also not so sharp that they drive themselves - you still have control.

If you want to do an Eastern DIsh, or 'bunny butt' on your Aussie, the best thing is a big pair of curved shears, and then use the thinning shears to shape it.

These are my three favorite basic types of shears - not the exact models, but close. These are not too expensive, and probably would do the trick. the best thing, though, would be to go and try the vairous shears - they do feel differently in your hands, even within a brand.

You can also ask at PetEdge what they have for returns - they often have quite a collection in a box at a considerable discount.

But seriously, you don't really want the Japanese shears - I had them and returned them after cutting my finger so badly it didn't stop bleeding for hours, and I just thank God it was my finger and not the dog's tendon - those things are ALIVE!!!

What are the best professional dog grooming clippers?

I am looking to buy a real pair of clippers for doing my dogs and to possibly get into professional grooming as well.
Experienced groomers, what are the best kind of clippers and any other tools (scissors, thinning shears, brushes, etc ) do you use and recommend on a daily basis.
I have bought some from Petsmart for like 60 bucks and then after 5-6 haircuts they are junk! Also they heat up and make lines in the dog's coat.
Advice is appreciated!

Osters, Wahls and Andis are the best brands out there. A variety of blades of different lengths. A good pair of 8 1/2" straight shears, a pair of fine thinning shears, and possibly a pair of curved shears are good for a beginning groomer. A variety of slicker brushes, rakes, combs of different sizes, Mar coat king, furminator, and a good quality pair of nail trimmers can make up the rest of your kit. The thing that you need most is the knowledge of using this equipment in an efficient and humane manner.

If your dog is a non-shedding dog, they will have to go through a process called stripping. This sounds more painful than it really is, where the dead hair of the dog is pulled off to make room for new hair to grow.

Bathing your dog is usually done with a garden hose, hand-held shower head or a bucket of water. These methods all depend on the location or type of salon you are taking your dog to. There are many types of shampoos and conditioners that can be used to clean your dog and also depend on the salon that you take your dog to. It is important to note that bathing your dog too much will strip the hair coat of natural oils and cause it to dry out. If you are maintaining your dogs coat yourself, be sure to take a note of this as it is very important.

Lastly, nail trimming is also an important part of dog grooming. If a dog's nails are left to grow, they might begin to curl over and under the dog's paws, making it extremely hard to walk and can be very painful. If dog's do not get their nails trimmed on a regular basis, the quick will grow along with the nail and make it nearly impossible to cut properly. You can do this process yourself, but it is not recommended because if you go too far you may cause bleeding so it is better to take your pet to a professional groomer.

Does anyone know the correct way to thin out my hair with thinning shears?

OH i can totally relate to your issue!!! I have tried everything (literally) and i would suggest layers and side bangs. The layer lessen the weight and thickness and the side bangs take out some of the bulk as well. Not ridiculously short side bangs but longer whispy like ones. Then i use antipoof shampoo by hairapy and a defrizz serum. Then i always wash my hair in the am to prevent it from becoming poofy. This makes the layers more managable and my hair lighter. Matted hair problems?

So my aussie keeps getting her coat matted behind her ears right before her collar. I've untangled by hand, brushed it, combed it, washed it (in that order)...and it seems to be right back a few days later. The collar is a flat buckle nylon collar. Any ideas on what to do?

I usually take the thinning shears to that area on most double coated dogs I groom. If the matts are really tight I clipper right behind the ears with a ten blade.
Try running the thinning shears through the area, it is undercoat that is getting matted there.

which shears are best for dog grooming: straight or curved or both?

ive heard some groomers only use straights, while others only use curved. which ones or both are needed? i am a newbie groomer and am wondering.....

It depends on the coat you are grooming. I use curved shears for shaping curly coats on Poodles, Bichons, and to trace the foot of my Beardie. Straight shears are useful for everything else.

However, I get the most use out of my thinning shears. I use them for EVERYTHING. You'll probably want a good pair of curved, straight and thinning shears.

Border Collie show grooming supplies?

What grooming supplies should I have for my border collies for conformation (doggie shows). Like the small stuff: coat handler, chalk, cholesterol.... I have a blow dryer, grooming table, straight scissors, thinning shears, clipper, and brushes. What else would I need? Shammy, smell pretty stuff, or what else?
Does anyone know anyplace to order from?

I would invest in a good apron. Chalk can become quite messy.

As for chalk the best chalk you can use is billard chalk its what i use on my bullies. Amazon has it for like 7 bucks. All the other chalk does not compare to this stuff. THe powder also works but its much more messier

I for get what we use but we get it at the shows and it is a pink/purple can with a maltese on the front of it.
