What is something that is universal to both dogs and cats?

I have an upcoming event and I want to give something out to all in attendance (all pet owners) - for my design, I wanted to use something that was universal to both cats and dogs, so, for example, I don't want to use a dog house or a bone, since cats couldn't be associated with that. The only things close that we came up with were a paw print (arguably universal) and a pet collar....

Did you know that a dog jumping up on people is a sign of dominant dog behavior? Dominance issues are one of the more serious dog behavior problems. If a dominant canine is causing headaches for you, you need to stop dog jumping now.

Dominant Dog Behavior

Canines are pack animals. Each pack has a leader who asserts his dominance over the other individuals in the group. The leader will often do this by "jumping up" on another pack member and putting one or both front paws on the other's shoulders. Are you seeing any similarities here with your pup's behavior?

Watch how two canines greet each other. Each will stand quietly and allow the other pup to sniff him. They don't jump all over each other when they first meet. This kind of behavior is very ill-mannered in the canine world, because, as mentioned above, putting front paws on another individual is a way of asserting dominance.

In the pack, a subordinate individual would NEVER jump on the pack leader. The leader will not tolerate this behavior if he wants to remain the leader, so he corrects the subordinate pup immediately.

If you allow your pet to jump up on you, and you don't correct him right away, you're confirming to him that he's the alpha dog in your household. This is a sure recipe for dog behavior problems.

Controlling A Dominant Pet

It's important that you don't allow your pet to jump up and get his front paws on you. If he attempts to jump up on you, turn to the side and block him with your hip. If he manages to get his paws on you, turn your back on him and make a point of ignoring him. Once all four feet are on the ground, tell him to "sit" and then pet him.

Never reward him with attention for jumping up on you. If he ambushes you and gets those front paws on you, don't yell "no" or back away or push him off with your hands. He's liable to think you're playing with him, which will make him jump even more.

A dominant dog will often demand your attention. You must be the one who decides when he gets attention. Ignore him when he demands that you pet him. If he's very insistent or pushy, use a water pistol to squirt him in the face. When he gets down, tell him to "sit" and then pet him. Never give in to his demands.

Make him earn your attention. Have him sit-stay before you pet him. Your dog needs your love and attention, but you need to give it to him on your terms, not his.

More Dog Obedience Tips

Consistency is extremely important to stop dog jumping. You won't be able to end any dog behavior problem if someone in your household is encouraging it.

Spend ten minutes a day training your pup. You'll be amazed at what a difference even a few minutes a day will make in his behavior.

Your goal now is to look for a good dog training course so you can learn to control dominant dog behavior. Try to find one that offers a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer, so you can avoid accidentally reinforcing problem behaviors. Some, or maybe most dogs will at an early age start to bark at their owners for attention. Most owners, through a lack of knowledge or out of frustration and impatience, would then respond by either calling the dog to them and trying to calm it, or by yelling at the dog to stop barking. This is exactly what the dog wanted. It does not take long for the dog to realise that if he barks, he receives attention.

If this attention barking is not stopped within the first couple of days, the dog may develop a habit of bark-for-attention. This unwanted behaviour can even develop to such a degree that it can be classified as a compulsive disorder. The best way to stop this from happening is to prevent it to become a habit in the first place. This should be done within the first day or two.

If this barking behaviour is a mild attention-seeking activity, just avoiding reinforcement may be enough to stop it. In other words it may be enough for the owner to just ignore the dog. The dog will realise that no attention is given and will stop his barking.

If, on the other hand, his barking has been rewarded a few times even by yelling at him, he might be more persistent. It might then be necessary to reward alternate behaviours. The owner could use a clicker and click for every period of silence, even if it is only a second or two. He can later demand a longer period of silence before clicking and add a cue to the silent behaviour.

Some dogs do not only bark for attention. Especially dogs that are left alone for hours at a time, will start barking out of boredom. With breeds like Border Collies and Australian Shepherds an increase in mental and physical exercise might be enough to stop the barking.

Other bark-stoppers that professional trainers use are:

• A shaker can. You can fill a can with pebbles or coins and when the dog starts barking, you shake the can. The noise will startle the dog and he will stop barking. At that very moment, click and treat the dog.

• Spray bottle. The concept works exactly the same as the shaker can. Fill the bottle with water and when the dog barks, spray him with water. He will stop barking for a moment and then you must click and treat the dog.

• Bark Collar. Bark collars use both vibration and sound sensors (dual-detection) to discriminate each bark from other external noises. A Static Correction is administered through the Contact Points only if both the vibration from the vocal chords and the sound from the bark match the same criteria.

• Spray Bark Collar. A spray bark collar targets your dog's ultra-heightened sense of smell for immediate results. Each time your dog barks, the microphone will detect the barking and the bark collar releases a harmless spray.

To be successful at training your dog not to bark, you must be very consistent. Use positive reinforcement methods when you train the dog. The best is to stop the unwanted behaviour before it becomes a habit.

What to do when neighbor complains about barking dog?

My neighbor works at night and sleeps during day time. The complain is that my dog barks during day time disrupting her sleep. I already received a warning from the city.
Due to this I have bought a spray no bark collar for the dog to reduce the barking.

I would suggest going round to speak to your neighbour. Apologise about the problem and explain what you are doing to try and stop this to them.

Make sure you enrol your dog in a training class, and mention this to your neighbour. This way it shows you are trying to sort it

Soon you will be able to use the quiet command without having a treat in your hand. Dog obedience takes time, but is important to establish guidelines of respect and understanding with your favorite pet.

 

Dog barking is something that is hard to live with, and you should not have to. So if the quiet command does not stop the barking dog, then you may have to go with different products that are made to help stop dog barking. Usually these are things that you put around their neck that gives them a small shock when the dog starts to bark. Living with dog barking is hard, but now you do not have to!

Every morning around 7 my dog begins to bark and cry. Ultrasonic collars can be used to stop barking dogs. There is some debate about whether ultrasonic collars are humane. The trouble is we humans can't hear ultrasonic sound so it's hard to make a call on whether this is too loud or even painful for a dog. However, they all work on the idea that a loud noise that will startle a dog and cut off the barking.

Humans can't hear this but dogs can as it's an annoying, high-pitched sound that is triggered whenever the dog barks.
For collars the sound is set off by the dog wearing the collar; however there have been cases of these being set off by other dogs' barking, or even other loud noises.

For dogs that don't belong to you, there are devices that generate an ultrasonic noise if there is a dog barking in range. A popular one is "Bark Free" although they all work on the same principle most have a range of between 20-70 feet. They are mounted outside as close as possible and ideally in line of sight of the barking dog. When the dog barks, the device emits a tone that acts as a distraction that startles the dog to stop it from barking.

Sonic collars operate on the same principle as ultrasonics, but this sound can be heard by humans. You have to hope the dog stops barking or you'll have 2 noise sources.

Citronella Dog Collar
The citronella-spray collar works on the principle that a mild unpleasant smell can stop barking. Most of us are familiar with citronella from anti-mosquito candles. Citronella is a natural oil with a lemony smell that is quite pleasant for us but unpleasant for dogs (but not inhumane). I am not sure I would fancy a spray of Citronella up close. Dogs eventually figure it out...although some revert to barking when it is taken off. To be effective any measure has to be consistent and removing the collar is not consistent. These can also be set off by other dogs...a tad unfair and confusing methinks. It seems a reasonable step to try if you are running out of ideas and training hasn't worked.

Pinch Collars
So you are at the end of your tether. You have what looks to be an un-trainable dog. A more serious measure that has been around for a long time is the pinch-collar. These collars imitate what their mothers used to do to correct them as puppies...a sharp nip on the neck.
Most trainers recommend having the dog wear it all the time so that when the dog barks and she doesn't stop immediately, give the collar a tug. This effectively stops the dog in mid bark most times. And follow-up with praise and a pet. The pinch collar interrupts the unwanted behavior. Big drawback is that you need the lead to be on and you to be right with the dog.
If you decide to do this, get properly trained in its use and how to put it on your dog. And never never never use it as a punishment. This is a questionable technique for me as it is definitely painful to the dog and if you get angry it may be easy to pinch too long.

Choke Collars
Choke collars work on this same interruption idea but with no link back to being a puppy. They compress the dog's windpipe and for that reason I personally don't like them.

Shock Collars
Shock collars arte plain and simple punishment, they give an electric shock whenever the dog barks. Some models you can adjust the voltage. They will stop barking eventually but don't get to the cause of the barking and the shock is unlikely to be understood by the dog. Some trainers think these cause more aggressive behavior as the dog gets frustrated angry and scared. I would hesitate before using these.

Which anti bark collar is best to stop dog barking in my case?

I've tried Bark Busters and they were completely useless and a real waste of money. My vet recommended using a bark collar, but he didn't really give much more information than that. I assumed all bark collars were the same, so I didn't ask him to elaborate.

Be aware that the fallout from using a bark collar on your dog will most likely be unexpected and hard to handle. Whenever punishment is used, there are always unintended consequences for that punishment.
