Citronella collar spray stops barking in many dogs. These collars apparently do not stop barking in all dogs. Let's face it, there are some real hard heads out there. Then there are some dogs that may be so slow-witted they don't associate the negative consequences of the collar with the barking. In any case, here is the way a spray collar works.

The MultiVet Anti-Bark Spray Collar, Citronella was the one we ordered and tested. The test subject was our high energy field type English Cocker Spaniel. No way we would subject this dog to a shock collar. She just needed to know that the barking was getting out of hand. She didn't seem capable of following our carefully phrased instructions to tone it down.

The collar working part is just a small black box that fits on the collar underneath the dogs head, on the front of the neck. The small box, about 2 inches square, includes a sensor, an oil reservoir and the spray pump.

Instruction said to put the collar on for a few days before turning it on. That's what we did, though we were past ready to give it a go.

When we finally armed the sprayer, the first bark produced a fine cloud of mist completely engulfing the dog's head. There is no spray of liquid, just a misty cloud, that's all. The second bark produced the same result and that was it. Two barks and then silence reigned. It's been much like that for about two months now.

The collar is only used occasionally. For the most part the spray collar isn't on and when it is on only part of the time is it armed. The dog learned that barking overly much was not desired. She took the hint and shut up most of the time. We didn't want her to quit barking. We just wanted her to control it.

Citronella collar results for us are completely positive. It's an inexpensive collar and may not work for all dogs. It worked for the one we tried it on though. The Multi-Vet Anti-Bark Spary Collar worked perfectly. worked perfectly.

Some, or maybe most dogs will at an early age start to bark at their owners for attention. Most owners, through a lack of knowledge or out of frustration and impatience, would then respond by either calling the dog to them and trying to calm it, or by yelling at the dog to stop barking. This is exactly what the dog wanted. It does not take long for the dog to realise that if he barks, he receives attention.

If this attention barking is not stopped within the first couple of days, the dog may develop a habit of bark-for-attention. This unwanted behaviour can even develop to such a degree that it can be classified as a compulsive disorder. The best way to stop this from happening is to prevent it to become a habit in the first place. This should be done within the first day or two.

If this barking behaviour is a mild attention-seeking activity, just avoiding reinforcement may be enough to stop it. In other words it may be enough for the owner to just ignore the dog. The dog will realise that no attention is given and will stop his barking.

If, on the other hand, his barking has been rewarded a few times even by yelling at him, he might be more persistent. It might then be necessary to reward alternate behaviours. The owner could use a clicker and click for every period of silence, even if it is only a second or two. He can later demand a longer period of silence before clicking and add a cue to the silent behaviour.

Some dogs do not only bark for attention. Especially dogs that are left alone for hours at a time, will start barking out of boredom. With breeds like Border Collies and Australian Shepherds an increase in mental and physical exercise might be enough to stop the barking.

Other bark-stoppers that professional trainers use are:

• A shaker can. You can fill a can with pebbles or coins and when the dog starts barking, you shake the can. The noise will startle the dog and he will stop barking. At that very moment, click and treat the dog.

• Spray bottle. The concept works exactly the same as the shaker can. Fill the bottle with water and when the dog barks, spray him with water. He will stop barking for a moment and then you must click and treat the dog.

• Bark Collar. Bark collars use both vibration and sound sensors (dual-detection) to discriminate each bark from other external noises. A Static Correction is administered through the Contact Points only if both the vibration from the vocal chords and the sound from the bark match the same criteria.

• Spray Bark Collar. A spray bark collar targets your dog's ultra-heightened sense of smell for immediate results. Each time your dog barks, the microphone will detect the barking and the bark collar releases a harmless spray.

To be successful at training your dog not to bark, you must be very consistent. Use positive reinforcement methods when you train the dog. The best is to stop the unwanted behaviour before it becomes a habit.

Has anyone found an effective bark collar for a small dog?

I have a miniature poodle - about 8 pounds with a really skinny neck. He barks in the morning when I leave for work. I have tried a beeping collar, which worked for awhile, and a shock collar (petsmart) which I don't think ever shocked him even when he barked. Please recommend a specific brand and model. I'm sick of buying and returning collars, and I don't want to upset the neighbors anymore! Other suggestions to keep him from barking are appreciated as well. I try to exercise him regularly and distract him with peanut butter treats when I leave.

Please DO NOT debark your dog like someone suggested. That is one of the cruelest things you can do. Training usually does the trick for barking, but it takes time,patience, and consistency. That's the only way your dog is really going to learn in my opinion. What to do when neighbor complains about barking dog?

My neighbor works at night and sleeps during day time. The complain is that my dog barks during day time disrupting her sleep. I already received a warning from the city.
Due to this I have bought a spray no bark collar for the dog to reduce the barking.

I would suggest going round to speak to your neighbour. Apologise about the problem and explain what you are doing to try and stop this to them.

Make sure you enrol your dog in a training class, and mention this to your neighbour. This way it shows you are trying to sort it

Have you used one of those anti-bark collars that uses the spray (I think it's citronella) rather than shock

to get your dog to stop barking? How well do they work? Is there anything cruel or unusual about this type of collar?

Yes. The Shelter I work for suggests these collars ( citronella ) for people having problems with barking dogs. They work very well. The strong odor affects the dogs because of their strong sense of smell. My friend , who is a vet, uses it on her Great dane. Its very rare he actually gets sprayed because it usually just takes one or two times, and the dog doesn't wanna bark with it on. Very effective product, I highly reccomend it

EDIT IG64... citronella does not have a lasting odor. Once sprayed the odor goes away very quickly, thats the reason they use citronella in the collar. The few hundred dogs that I have seen with these collars on react to the initial spray, then they are not bothered after that. Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For instance, your dog won't come when you call him and pays you no attention, so you clicj the remote. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. There will be many people who claim that one of these collars has saved their dog' life. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.
