I want to make my dog a bed but I need a strong fabric because he likes to chew and scratch at it and it's not long before there's a hole in it.

My dog is is leash aggressive ONLY with some larger dogs. Help?

I have read that I should correct him and say "NO!," read that I should ignore the behavior, and read that I should try to distract him with treats. Lots of conflicting advice! He ignores treats when he gets worked up like this.

We live in the city so we are always walking past other dogs. My dog is fine until we are withing 3-4 feet of the dog and then he lunges and gets growly. My dog is fine with smaller dogs on leash and dogs that he already knows. He also gets along well with dogs in secure off leash environments. He is a very dominant dog and he feels the need to challenge larger dogs.

How should I work with him? I'm not sure if I should correct him for this aggression or ignore it? Neither seems to help and I am at my wits end...

Once your dog starts ignoring you and/or food you've lost control, you've pushed him past his threshold. At this point he is in a state of mind where learning cannot take place.

You need work with him below threshold. Since he reacts to dogs at 4 feet, you need start at 6 feet away. Shovel some treats in mouth for a few seconds, turn and walk the other way. If he won't take them at 6 feet, then you're still to close. If he takes them like a starved shark, you're to close.

Over time you can slowly move closer as your dog starts to associate those other dogs with good things. Essentially you are changing his perception of other dogs from bad, scary things that need to go away, to great things that mean awesome stuff happens.

Where can I buy a crate for my cat to take him with me on a plane to California?

I am moving to California, and I would like to take my cat with me. However, my preferred airline has a requirement for his carrier/crate that "Food and water dishes must be securely attached inside the travel container and placed so that they can be filled from the outside without opening the door."
I cannot find a crate like this anywhere, online or in a pet store. It also has to be a solid material.

How can I get urine scent out of a plastic dog carrier?

I dont know if it soaked in more because its plastic? We have cleaned it twice with a Clorax cleaner and then sprayed "No Go" (to neutralize the enzyme) and it still smells horrible! Do you have any recipes for cleaners or cleaners that are not incredibly expensive?

Use one part Wisk (or other laundry detergent with "enzymes" listed as an ingredient) and one part warm water. Let it set for a while, then rinse. If it did soak in (yes, plastic absorbs odor like crazy), you may have to let it soak longer and/or repeat to remove the smell completely. You could add a bit of baking soda to the mix to help absorb the odor, too...
The enzymes are the same ones found in the expensive stuff at pet stores (Nature's Miracle and the like).
You can use this (only with 4-5 parts water to one part detergent) to remove urine odor from carpet & beds, as well. Be careful to rinse well from carpet or it will leave a sticky spot that attracts dirt. I use one of those little spot-cleaning wet-vacs.
Ammonia is nothing but fermented urine - it will only compound the problem and odor.
I've tried vinegar on urine spots. Vinegar will leave your stuff smelling like... well, vinegar AND pee.

Before you fly into the wide blue yonder with your furry travel companion, you need to take him or her to the veterinarian for a checkup, to make sure he or she is healthy enough to travel.  You will also need to take its health certificate with you, showing that your pet is up-to-date on all its vaccinations, including rabies.  Your pet must wear its current vaccination tag when traveling.  As well, your pet must meet the health regulations of every country that you will be traveling to.  Bring along a copy of your pet's medical records listing its allergies, chronic medical conditions, and medications. 

If you haven't done this already, you should have your pet micro-chipped.  That way, if your pet is lost and taken to an animal shelter or vet, where its chip can be scanned, both can be reunited.  Keep in mind your pet's identification tag will have both your home address and phone number on it.  That won't be of much help if your pet gets lost when you are on vacation.  It may be a good idea to get another tag made up that has your destination address and phone number on it.  What happens if you pet isn't found until after you've returned from your holidays?  It makes sense that you should leave both your home I.D. tag on your pet as well as attaching the new tag.  That way you'll have all the bases covered and stand a better chance of being reunited with your pet

 You should carry a picture of you pet with you when you travel.  It will help you prove that you are the pet's owner if any problems of ownership occur.  Also, the picture can be used to make some flyers up to post in the area where your pet was lost.

Flying with pets that are too large to fit into a FAA approved pet carrier is not a good idea as they will be stowed in the cargo hold.  Putting your pet in the cargo hold of an aircraft is very traumatic and dangerous to its health.    It makes far more sense to leave your pet with a friend, or a pet sitting service while you are vacation.

The American Veterinary Medical Association does not recommend sedating or tranquilizing your pet when flying, especially dogs.  Dogs regulate their body temperature when they pant, so when they are tranquilized or sedated, they may not be able to pant.  If this happens, it may leave them defenseless against the fluctuation of air pressure and temperature that occurs in the cargo hold of every flight.  Also, keep in mind that pets do not enjoy flying, or being locked up in a cramped kennel and left alone in a dark and desolate cargo hold.  It must be very terrifying for them.

There are a lot of websites that give additional valuable information in regards to traveling with your pet.  Two excellent sites are the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) at aspca.org, and the Department of Agriculture at aphis.usda.gov, which has a great article entitled, Traveling With Your Pet.

Pouch Pet Carrier

a sling/ carrier for a small toy poodle?

i have my little 10 year old Lolo who loves to come on long walks with my other two dogs but when we r around our neighbourhood i don't like to take him out in the stroller as there are so many stairs and hills and curbs i would have to lift the stroller over.

i have the pet fundle sling that i used for my other dog tequila but he seems too small for it. he will lie down and then the top of the bag closes over him and it must get very hot in there. he can sit up in it but i think sometimes he gets very tired and just wants to lie down.

i don't like to use the bag where it's only on one part of my shoulder like a handbag as it gets very heavy after a while.

could someone recommend me a carrier/ sling that would be better suited for little Lolo. i was looking at those pouches where the dogs sit in like a baby pounch. where his legs would be spread as he has some arthitis so it would be if he could sit in a sling etc.

Walk him, don't put him in sling. Dogs are meant to walk. If he can't keep up with the other dogs then you need to do two separate walks instead of putting one in a sling. It's just... not what owning a dog is about.

Everyone who has ever owned a puppy or a kitten has experienced this problem: Their new pet suffers from separation anxiety. They want to be held constantly. And they want to go everywhere with you: To the kitchen ...to the bedroom ...to the bathroom ...out to the garage ...and everywhere else!

And when they aren't following you everywhere you go, they want body contact: A warm body to snuggle up against.

When we got our first puppy, a small Chihuahua named Koda, we quickly relized that puppies demand attention ...a lot of attention! Like most puppies, Koda hated being alone. He would follow us around everywhere and always wanted to be held. Obviously, holding him or carrying him around all the time wasn't an option. And of course, we couldn't get very much done with just one free hand while we were carrying a puppy around. This was a pet problem begging for a solution.

We finally started wearing zip-up sweatshirts so that we could put our puppy inside and zip him in just enough for his head to pop-out. This experience sparked the idea to create a pullover sweatshirt with a specialized pocket, or puppy pouch, just for our puppy to snuggle in. We searched the internet and looked in all the local pet stores, but none of the available dog carriers worked as well as our makeshift sweatshirt solution. We also looked everywhere for sweatshirts with big pouch pockets which we could use to serve our own puppy carrying purposes, but none were up to the task. To our amazement, no one had ever designed clothing apparel suitably designed for carrying puppies or small pets!

So we made our own. We constructed our first puppy carrier for our own puppy from an old pullover hoodie sweatshirt. Not suprisingly, our puppy loved it. Whether we were at Starbucks sipping a latte', or having dinner or lunch at an outdoor cafe, he loved getting into his pouch and snuggling while we enjoyed our meal or coffee. We also found that our puppy was quite content to be carried in his pouch while we strolled the boardwalk at the beach or walked through local malls.

And we noticed something else. A puppy in a puppy pouch sweatshirt created a lot of excitement. Of course, everyone wanted to pet the cute little puppy who's face popped-out from the kangaroo-like pouch. But our puppy carrier sweatshirt itself stirred incredible interest and curiosity.

It seemed that people who owned small pets needed only to see our puppy in his pouch ...and they became intrigued with the idea of carrying their pet in their clothing. The functionality of our pet carrier sweatshirts was immediately apparent to pet owners whose small pet tires quickly during morning walks or simply needs a safe place to snuggle while their master goes about their business.

So the moral to this story is simple. If you discover a solution to a pet problem that no one else has addressed, you may find yourself providing the solution if it is going to happen at all. As a business associate of mine is fond of saying: If it is to be ...it's up to you!
