DIY dog grooming. My dog is kinda mean, so I am being forced to do it myself?

I have a 6 year old male Shih Tzu. Everytime he goes to the groomer he gets scared and he growls and snaps. I had a groomer before that could deal with him, but I have since moved out of state. I have tried every groomer in the area where I live now, they either wont groom him at all or they call me in mid groom and say "Come get him, I cant work with this dog." Or they charge me about 100$ over the normal price because they said he acted bad and took up to much of their time. So I have been forced to face the fact I am going to have to do this myself. I bought a dog grooming kit with shears, brushes and clippers. But I am confused about something, do I shave the dog before the bath? Or do I give him a bath, dry him then shave him? Or should I bathe him then shave while his hair is still wet? And please dont tell me this breed does not need to be shaved, I know that, but he just isnt happy when his hair is long. Any info and tips will help alot, thanks!

Wow, it's like practically nobody read your question and just flung out all sort of opinions about mats and stuff you didn't even mention. Wierd. Also, about 95 % of pet Shih Tzus ARE clipped down into various length "Puppy Cuts".

Generally, clip the coat, wash the dog, dry the dog, reclip the coat. You may find that the dog bites you at the same point he bites the groomers, in which case you would have to resort to the vet grooming.

Places to watch your fingers and face are doing his feet and working around his face. Some males get nasty about having their privates shaved. If he is not neutered, I recommend you get him done. No sense to ever breed a Shih Tzu with a bad attitude, generally Shih Tzus are nice and calm, never mean.

If your grooming set can not handle his fur, go to a pet super store and buy an Andis clipper and get one that includes a #10 blade. Then you could buy a #4 blade on the side and you could clip him with that blade in the winter, the 10 in the summer.

How to start a Dog Grooming service?

I'm a great groomer,at the age of 13. I groomed lost of dogs for free, but now I want to groom locally for money. I have a grooming kit (razor, 3 different blades, scissors, and blade covers) 3 different shampoo and a stand for the dog. Im really great at dogs short or long haired.

Study every dog breed to learn more about their coats and grooming needs. Find a professional grooming school near you by doing an Internet search. The course of study can take up to a year and will require some expenses: enrolling fee, books, materials. Apply and enroll in the school. Sometimes classes are available online. Obtain a certificate of completion from the professional grooming school. Visit a groomer's association or look into one online. Make an appointment to take an exam. Upon passing the exam, you will receive a Master Groomer Certificate. Apply for a job as a grooming assistant to get some experience. Have you used one of those anti-bark collars that uses the spray (I think it's citronella) rather than shock

to get your dog to stop barking? How well do they work? Is there anything cruel or unusual about this type of collar?

Yes. The Shelter I work for suggests these collars ( citronella ) for people having problems with barking dogs. They work very well. The strong odor affects the dogs because of their strong sense of smell. My friend , who is a vet, uses it on her Great dane. Its very rare he actually gets sprayed because it usually just takes one or two times, and the dog doesn't wanna bark with it on. Very effective product, I highly reccomend it

EDIT IG64... citronella does not have a lasting odor. Once sprayed the odor goes away very quickly, thats the reason they use citronella in the collar. The few hundred dogs that I have seen with these collars on react to the initial spray, then they are not bothered after that. And it does not spray on the face of the dog, it sprays a mist in front of the dog, its designed not to spray directly in the dogs face

A dog that barks all day and night can ruin your life and make war with your neighbors.

There is a huge range of training collars for dogs and a vociferous debate among owners and trainers as to whether these collars are humane and effective or whether they are cruel and counterproductive.

Different types of collar are used for different purposes. The two main uses are for distance control, when the dog is out of the trainer's immediate reach and is not on a leash and the second aim is to control excessive barking.

The distance training collar enables the trainer to administer a shock to the dog, by using a handheld transmitter which causes an electric pulse in the collar. This distracts the dog from whatever undesirable behavior it is currently doing and lets the trainer get his attention.

Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For instance, your dog won't come when you call him and pays you no attention, so you clicj the remote. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. There will be many people who claim that one of these collars has saved their dog' life. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

If you have the time, the patience and the knowledge, then by far the best solution is to train your dog to bark at appropriate times and to get him to "Speak and be "Quiet" on command. There are plenty of excellent training courses available at reasonable prices. More details in the links below.

However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.

How Long is my dog allowed to bark in toronto?

I live in the suburbs in Toronto and my dog barks for maybe 5-10 minutes in the garden then we bring him back into the house.

Dog owners all know the frustration, embarrassment and lack of peace and quiet a constantly barking dog can cause. While we love our pets when a dog is out of control and barking constantly you can be at your wits end and end up yelling back at your dog or doing things you may not be proud of. So how do you control a barking dog? What dog training technique can you utilize?

First of all we must understand the root cause of your dogs barking. Usually a dog barks because it is excited, bored or scared. All of these things have one common thread, they all stem from a lack of confidence in a dog to deal with its situation. Excited dogs often go out of control barking because they are encouraged to do so by owners who get over-excited themselves or are loud and animated very often, your dog will think it is ok to do such things and may not understand how to control this once they start. Bored dogs bark because they do not know how to handle being alone and frustrated; they bark because they want attention and a relief to the boredom. Dogs who are scared also bark to sound more threatening and feel they need to be very vocal about it. If your dog is also aggressive when scared you may need to be more careful with its training however so watch out for signs of baring teeth and snarling also.

IF your dog barks in some or all of these situations then what you need to do is teach them how to deal with this by positive reinforcement and being a good role model. Your relationship with your dog is the most important part of the training, as the master your dog sees you as the pack leader and will take cues from you good or bad. You must behave in a way that makes them comfortable with the situations by not making a big deal out of any of their fears. So let’s break down some examples for the different reasons for excessive barking we have discussed.

Excited

When your dog gets overexcited you must learn to not give it attention, too much praise and attention can send it into overdrive and reinforces that it is ok to be hyperactive and loud. You must learn to be calm and ignore the dog while they are in this state until they calm down, only once they are calm and not barking should you show any praise. When you do show praise make sure it is calm and soft to keep the situation settled. Also when you arrive home do not get too excited to see your pet, if you immediately start lavishing attention on it they will start associating barking and people arriving.

Bored

When you leave your pet at home and go to work do they bark? Or do they bark at night when they are outside? Again reinforcing the wrong behavior is something we do too often by letting the dog back inside at night or by making a big deal of coming home or leaving the house. The dog must know it is normal to be alone sometimes, when it gets too much attention it panics when it is deprived of this. To train the dog to realize being alone is normal you must make sure when you leave or return to the house or even from room to room you must not greet the dog but ignore them, only praise them if they do not bark and do not yell at them. Only when they realize as the pack leader this is all normal will they calm down.

Scared

Dogs usually become scared if the owner shows signs of panic or fear try not to be panicky or agitated around the dog. Make sure you are in control of your emotions and actions when around your dog and they will feel comfortable with their master and with themselves enough to keep calm.

If you become the dogs pack leader and show that everything is ok, there is nothing to fear and that you are the master who does not have to give attention to them they will gradually learn to be more comfortable in whatever situation they find themselves in. What kind of shampoo is good for a Bernese Mountain Dog's coat?

I have a one year old bernese, and he always likes to roll in the dirt and mud. I need some suggestions about what kind of shampoo or what not to clean his coat. The shampoo that I use at the moment doesn't get his white fur that bright white color anymore and I would like to get that color back. Please help!

I like shampoo's made by either "Kelco" or "Bio Groom". Also a trick of the trade to get your dog super clean. Get your dog super lathered up with the shampoo all over then take a slicker brush and brush the dog with the shampoo on. It will get all the loose undercoat out and will get your dog clean to the skin. And when you brush out your dog, section out the dog. Start by brushing out the back leg. Then work your way to the rib cage area working your way all around the dog. This will help so you won't jump around the dog, so you'll know what you've done and what you haven't worked on.

Maltese dogs are not only beautiful but are lovable and kind natured dogs. As a member of the toy breed, they are small in stature and donÂ’t get much bigger than 6 pounds. Most of their bulk comes in the form of thick white hair. Their coats hang long, flat and silky over the sides of the body and skim the ground.

Taking care of the Maltese coat is the most important part of grooming the breed. Maltese should be brushed and combed a minimum of every other day. Daily brushing, however, is recommended if you want to keep their coat healthy.

The best brush to use is an open-spaced pin brush. Avoid brushes with “balls” on the pins. Start by lifting up the top layer of hair, spray a light coat of water or a leave in conditioner and brush the bottom half of the coat free. Continue until that layer is tangle-free all the way to the skin and then work up to the top layer of hair. Always make sure to brush the dog’s underbelly to prevent matting.

If your Maltese does develop mats, try to work it out gently at first with your fingers. Trying to brush it out first may result in hair loss. You can also try spraying the mat with de-tangler or a coat conditioning oil to loosen the hair.

Gently pull apart the mat with your fingers and the end tooth of a comb as necessary. The most important thing to remember is to go slowly because if you try to remove the mat too hastily, you may end up needing to cut the mat out.

Another important part of taking care of the Maltese coat is regular bathing. Before beginning the bathing process, brush and comb your dog thoroughly to get rid of any dead hair and knots. If there are any mats present, they must be taken care of first because water will only tighten the knot.

Once youÂ’ve prepared your dog, clean the dogÂ’s ears and then place a small ball of cotton inside. This will help prevent any water from entering the ear canal and causing an infection. Make sure to have all of your necessary equipment ready before beginning the bath and have plenty of towels within reach.

Begin the bathing by getting your dog wet to the skin and then applying a quality, tear-free shampoo along the back, each leg and under the tail of your Maltese. Start lathering your dog and work from the back to front. Rinse the coat and then shampoo again.

After youÂ’ve rinsed the second time, make sure to wash your MalteseÂ’s face carefully with a washcloth. Rise a third time over the dogÂ’s face and body to make sure all traces of soap are gone. Any leftover residue will irritate the dogÂ’s skin so this is a very important step.

Many Maltese owners like to use conditioner on their dog’s coat. A special type of conditioner called a “coat handler” works as a leave in conditioner, detangler and fragrance all in one.

Work the conditioner or coat handler through the dogÂ’s hair and then squeeze excess water from the coat. Pay close attention to the ears, tail and legs when removing water. Then you can start drying with towels. Once your dog is at the damp-dry state you can begin to blow-dry. After blow-drying, you can comb out the dogÂ’s hair to make it smooth. Wash your Maltese no more than once a week for a healthy coat.

What is the average monthly/yearly cost of owning a medium size dog?

We are looking into adopting an adult dog (4 years old), and are curious about the average cost of feeding, accessories (leash, etc) and vet appointments.

It has been said in the human world "all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy." Well, it is about the same in the canine world, too. It is important that a dog gets to play with other dogs, not only for fun and exercise, but to develop and to keep its socialization skills.

Play sessions with other dogs is important because if the dog does not associate with others of its kind, it will soon "de-socialize" and lose its ability to interact with other dogs.

Dogs in many ways are a lot like people, they have their preferences as to who they want to play with. Even the most socialized dog will not want to play with every dog it meets.

Some dogs prefer to play with like colored dogs, that have gentle type play styles, some prefer to play with males instead of females, and some prefer to play with young dogs, while others prefer older dogs. There are dogs that love to play with a large group and some who prefer one on one play.

It is important that you are aware of your dog's play styles and you learn this by watching your dog as a puppy playing with other dogs.

What are dog play styles? Well, some dogs like cat-like play (pouncing - using their paws, spinning around the other dog without touching); others like chasing (with playful stalking and taking turns chasing one another.) Larger breeds love to body slam each other (which includes hard bumps, shouldering, pushing into walls and wrestling) and then there is the neck-biting group (lying down with gentle neck biting, also on the face and ears.)

Different breeds have different styles of play. Toy breeds seem to prefer the cat and mouse pouncing type of play, sight hounds love a good game of chase, the working dogs like Newfoundlands and Saint Bernard's love chasing and body slamming. While other working dogs like boxers, Great Danes, Samoyed, mastiffs and huskies like neck biting in their playtime.

How do you know which dog will make a good playmate for your dog? Size matters, the dogs should be similar in size and neither dog should be more than twice the weight of the other.

You need to make introductions gradually. It is important that the dogs meet each other on neutral ground (either through a fence or by walking each dog on a leash.)

If your dog has never been to a dog park it is a good idea is to leave your dog off leash in the holding area until the dogs in the play area have greeted your dog through the fence and have gone back to play. This removes the stress your dog would feel if suddenly a large group of dogs loomed down on him/her and your dog has no place to escape to.

Once your dog joins the group in the play area, keep a watchful eye on the group. Dogs are like children and sometimes playing in a large group ends up with one or more getting mad, upset or hurt. They need constant supervision.

As an owner visiting the dog park with your pet is it wise to keep moving, this keeps the dogs moving and they are less apt to get into a scuffle. It is also a very good idea if your dog and another are playing hard, make them take a ten-second break every few minutes. This keeps the excitement down and prevents any mishaps, as dogs like children get overly excited.

If you notice any sign of stress either in your dog or the dog(s) involved in the play call a halt to the game. Signs of stress can be half-moon eyes, lip licking, a dropped down tail, yawning, and ears pulled back or stiff body language.

It is times like this that you have to listen to your instincts and not to what other people might be saying. Any sign that does not feel right to you is definitely a sign to get your dog and leave. By doing so you may be saving your dog and yourself from a bad situation.

Things to keep in mind:

If you have a small dog it is important that you find a dog park that has a separate area for small dogs only. Medium and large dogs need lots of space to run and play, if your park is not very large, try going at off-hours, if possible.

There are more and more groups being formed for play dates for dogs, you can find a group in your area by going to meetup.com or by doing a Google search in your area.

One of the best things you can do, is make play dates for your dog in your backyard with dogs of your friends and neighbors. Just be certain to supervise and keep things calm.

If you have a puppy, be certain that it has all its shots before taking it to a dog park and when you are there be very watchful, as a bad experience for your impressionable puppy, could create a life long problem with other dogs.

Playgroups, dog parks and backyard romps with friends is a great way for a puppy/dog to let off steam, get exercise and learn social dog manners. It is up to you, however, to recognize your dog's method of playing and to keep that in mind, when introducing him/her to other dogs. It is also your responsibility to know when your dog has had enough and needs to stop playing and go home.

It is all about having fun and as with children, you need to know when "enough is enough" when it comes to doggy playtime.

Pet grooming clippers, dog brushes, and nail clippers are a part of any smart dog owners animal tool kit. Some pets are easier to groom than others. If you own a long haired, indoor/outdoor dog, you will need to take a little more care of your pets coat. Good, basic, pet grooming techniques should always be a part of you and your pets life. Owning a sturdy coat brush, a good pair of pet grooming clippers and sharp pair of nail clippers is a great way to keep your vet bills down.

Pet Grooming Clippers and Dog Brushes for Coats

Especially for long haired dogs, you can save a little money by keeping he or she brushed and clipped free of matted hair yourself. You will need to use a brush or comb that is specifically tailored to your dogÂ’s coat (i.e. Long and thick, short and curly, etc.) and gently brush to work out tangles. You can use the comb to work through the under part of the coat.

The pet stores keep puppies in illegal conditions!!!!! if you go to a pet store, and there is nothing and the bottom of the crates and the wire mesh is visable, take pictures and show the police. the wire mesh can cut the puppies' paws. it is also illegal. also if you see over crowded cages(3 or more to a small cage) take pictures and show the police.

The best way for these awful places to shut down, is for people to be smart enough to NEVER ever buy from a pet store. You are looking at damaged, sick, second rate and in-bred dogs, who were most likely raised in cruel, dirty, unsocialized conditions. I agree with you. These places are terrible.

Choosing an indoor rabbit cage is less demanding than an outdoor one. It will not have to endure the elements, keep rabbits safe from predators (apart from other household pets), and doesn't need to provide as controlled an environment. This gives you a bit more freedom to choose an indoor rabbit cage based on your own needs, as well as those of your rabbit.

Perhaps the only disadvantage to an indoor cage for your rabbit is that you won't be able to simply allow waste to fall through the wire mesh floor, as you might with an outdoor hutch. Rabbit cages typically offer a catch tray under a wire floor which can be slid out for cleaning, or simply have a plastic base that detaches from the rest of the cage. The slide out trays are the most convenient for the purposes of cleaning, as they can be removed easily and aren't too bulky. Plastic bases, on the other hand, are better able to contain bedding and litter that might otherwise be kicked out the sides of an indoor rabbit cage.

Your rabbit will need to be able to get in and out of the cage, and you'll need to be able to reach inside. Consider how accessible the interior of an indoor rabbit cage is when choosing one. At least one door on the side is preferable, as it is much better for your rabbit to enter and exit an indoor rabbit cage under its own power, rather than be lifted in and out. Rabbits can seriously injure themselves if they are held improperly, and even if this doesn't happen, being forced in or out of their indoor rabbit cage will make your rabbit less secure and "at home" there. Make sure you are able to reach all parts of the interior easily, as you will be needing to spot clean an inside rabbit cage, refill and clean food bowls, remove old food or treats, etc. An indoor rabbit cage with one side door and one top door is probably best.

Also, if you plan to change the placement of your indoor rabbit cage frequently, you will want to choose one that comes with rolling casters. This will make it easy to move, although you will want to do this only when the rabbit is not in the cage, as the movement and disorientation will cause stress for the animal. Some indoor rabbit cages that do not have legs or wheels have carrying handles on top, which will also make it more convenient to move.

If space in your home is limited, you may want to consider one of several inside rabbit cage models that feature a multi level design. It will dramatically expand the effective space the rabbit has to move in, and they will enjoy being able to elevate for a better view of their surroundings. Make sure the ramps have a surface with plenty of traction to prevent slips and falls.

Keeping rabbits in an inside rabbit cage is really the best way to care for a rabbit. They will be in a safe, climate controlled environment, and being near you and your family will help them become socialized. With a knowledgeable owner, and a loving, comfortable environment, you and your rabbit will have many happy years to share together.
