Do you think some of the pet owners on the board go a little over board?

I notice the pet responses are overwhelmingly critical. One lady was asking what adult breed she should adopt (from a shelter) and she mentioned that 5 days a week she was out or 9 hours and almost everyone told her not to get a dog. Well.. does that mean any single person with a full time job shouldn't get a pet? And, even if we're not working aren't we all gone for gaps through out the day? Surely adoption and crate training is better than death.. or even adopting a house broken dog?

I think people here can be slightly judgemental about peoples pet care abilities. I think though lots of those people base their comments on a "perfect world" scenario. There is still a lot of useful information here, you just have to be a bit thick skinned about some of the responses.

Please consider the following reasons why most any pet owner, especially a dog owner should seriously consider making a dog crate part of the household. These are not listed in order of importance. You must decide which benefit is most important to you.

- A place of their own when visitors are present in the home—at this writing the holiday season is quickly approaching which means house guests. Many pets get nervous when company comes. Many owners get nervous for their pets when company visits. Many times the pets end up locked in another room or outside. A dog crate provides your pet with a safe place of their own to retreat into while visitors are present.

- Food and holidays go hand in hand. You know what you want your dog to eat and what foods are restricted. Your visitors will not know what your pet feeding rules are. If your pet is safely in their crate then no unwanted food will be given to your pet that could make them seriously ill or worse. If you have experienced that severe situation then you know what I am referring to.

-Vacation time—How great would it be to have your pet riding with you in the car, in his dog crate, safe, secure, resting out of harms way and just enjoying life as you enjoy the open road.

- Many people love camping and of course we always take our dogs along. Dog crates allow you to relax in the knowledge that your pet or pets are safe and secure in their dog crates when you are not exercising them or engaging is some other interaction directly with them. Your dogs know this crate to be their sleeping area, the same one they had at home, so they are comfortable in it. They will not wonder away. They will not get lost. You know exactly where they are.

- If you show your dogs you probably already know how great it is to have your dog resting in his or her dog crate while you are watching the show or talking to other exhibitors, a great example for the rest of us.

- If you have an older pet they want and require a place to rest that is safe and secure. If you have younger pets in the home this is often a problem for the older dog. Enter the dog crate, their own space, their bed, their safe place to rest away from the others that may want to jump and play instead of rest.

- Now I will say just a bit about puppies and dog crates. There is tons of information available on crate training your puppy so we will not go into that here except to say that crate training your puppy will change your life and theirs for the better.

- Unfortunately our pets occasionally require surgery for some reason. How great would it be to have a place where your crate trained dog could rest in safety while recuperating? That is just another very important use for your dog crate.

Pet crates and pet carriers are not punishment for your pet. Once you have successfully crate trained your pet they will enjoy their crate for the rest of their lives. Never use the crate for punishment. This is counter productive to your goals.

Cat Pet Crate
Where can I buy a crate for my cat to take him with me on a plane to California?

I am moving to California, and I would like to take my cat with me. However, my preferred airline has a requirement for his carrier/crate that "Food and water dishes must be securely attached inside the travel container and placed so that they can be filled from the outside without opening the door."
I cannot find a crate like this anywhere, online or in a pet store. It also has to be a solid material.

I think I got mine from like Target or Walmart or somewhere like that. I'm pretty sure it came with the dishes on it. My oldest cat is 17, so it was a while ago.

how cheap can i get a dog crate and dog bed?

My shih-tzu is a year old and used to be house-trained, but I have noticed little spots on my carpet lately. I used the "crate method" to train her. I've started using the pet pads, but she just pees beside them! Help, I dont want my house to smell like dog pee!

It can be incredibly aggravating when your puppy pees on the carpet or poops in your shoes. Even though this is aggravating behavior, it's important to remain calm and patiently teach your puppy how to go outside. Yet, many dog owners can not remain calm. Getting angry, and correcting your puppy in the incorrect fashion is not how to potty train your dog. In fact, it can not only damage your relationship with your dog, but it can cause even more problems.

The most common mistake that we make with dogs is that we them, including our puppies, as humans. For example, when our puppy pees on the floor while we're out of the house, we come home, see the mess, immediately become angry, grab our dog by the collar and drag it over to the pee spot, point its nose in the mess and say, "bad!" and the hilarious thing is that we actually expect them to understand what we're angry about. The fact is, however, that your pet has no idea why you're angry and it WILL NOT make the correlation between the pee spot, your anger and its mistake. Instead, all the dog will understand is that when you grab it by the scruff of the neck you're angry with it, therefore it will be afraid of you and probably continue peeing in the house, except this time it won't come when it's called.

When your dog pees in the house or chews on one of your shoes there is only a minute or so when correction can actually be correlated to that event. This means that, unless you catch your them in the act of peeing on the floor and then say, "no!" then your dog will not understand what you are correcting it for. And, since you can't always be around to catch them, you have to exercise other ways to potty train your pet.

The first lesson in how to potty train your dog is knowing what not to do, such as the following:

- As described above, don't correct your dog for doing its business in the house unless you catch your dog in the act. This can lead to severe mental problems and distrust of you as the owner. The dog will not be able to understand what it did wrong, no matter what you think.

- Despite popularity, it is not wise to get a pee pad for your dog. Unless your dog is much older and can't get around very well anymore, don't get a pad for your dog to pee on in the house, this only discourages potty training.

- Don't limit outings to pee and poop time. If you only take your dog for a walk or out in the yard in order for it to pee and poop, then your dog learns that the longer they take to do their business, the longer they get to stay outside. You need to exercise your dog regularly. Peeing and pooping is another thing.

- Don't let your dog free feed. I work over at a dog daycare and I always become discouraged when owners instruct us to leave food down all day for their dogs allowing their dogs to eat whenever. This causes tons of pee and poop messes in the kennels because dogs that don't have a regular eating schedule also don't have a regular bathroom schedule. If you really want to potty train your dog, then you have to provide your pet with a consistent eating schedule. That way, you will know when your dog needs to go to the bathroom and when it doesn't.

The following are examples of what you SHOULD do when potty training your dog:

- Always accompany your dog outside when it's time to go potty. This way you can make sure your dog goes in the yard and you can praise your dog for doing so. For example, when your dog pees in the yard, you need to say "good dog!" and tell your pet how cleaver it is and give it lots of hugs and kisses. That way your dog will correlate peeing and pooping in the yard as something positive.

With sure dog owner want their dogs to be well behaved and home furnishings to be in the same conditions when they leave their dogs home alone. Dog crate training takes patience and time but at the end you will see how rewarding it is and this can be achieved only with some simple steps. You dog will see its crate as a safe place and will be happy to be there.

How to choose the proper dog crate ?

There are of metal or plastic dog crates in different sizes. Your dog should feel well in the crate so there should be enough space for him to turn around and stand in. If your dog is still a puppy, buy a crate depending his adult size and block off the unnecessary space with a divider until he grows up. Of course if you don’t want to be funny with a giant carrier while there is  a little puppy in it, buy a smaller one.

How to start the Pet Crate Training ?
Depending on your dog's personality, age,and past experience, the training process could last from a few days to a few weeks. The process is slow. Your dog should associate its crate with pleasant feelings. First cover it with a soft blanket inside, put it in a high-traffic place of your home and then introduce the crate to your dog. Speak gently to him. It is clever to drop some treats near it and inside to encourage your dog to go closer and to enter. If he refuses- do not force him. After several days repeat this again. When at the end he is inside, feeling comfortably and eating with pleasure, close the door. The next step is to keep the door closed for a longer and longer period while you are at home. Repeat this process with the following commands- call him to the crate, give him something delicious and with a command like "kennel” for example, encourage him to go inside. Then the last step is to do this when you are leaving home for short periods.

Dos and Don'ts in Dog Crate Training

Don't let him out if she whines or barks

Don't give up if your dog fusses about going into the crate or whines

Don’t force the dog; he shouldn't be afraid of his crate

Don't use the crate as punishment

Don’t leave your puppy for a long in the crate- follow the rule- 1 month old, one hour in the crate, 2 months- 2 hours and so on.

Put your dog in the crate every time when  you can't supervise him no matter if this is  for five minutes or 5 hours

Check the airlines which you are  traveling with if it is airline-approved

Use the crate as a training tool for housebreaking and chewing

Give your dog a lot of time for playing and exercise and he will accept the crate as a den and a complement.

Is it normal to leave your pet dog in a crate while you go to work?

I've never owned a pet, so I was wondering if this was a common practice or if you think it's animal abuse.

I'm sure some people do.
I wouldn't do that to any of my dogs.
My dogs have the run of the house when I leave and they behave.
They are trained to hold it until I get home but they also have toys and chew stuff to keep them occupied.

After you have given sufficient time to your pet to get used to the travel crate at home, it's time to prepare the pet travel crate for the day of the flight when you would be relocating. It is crucial for you to prepare the crate correctly. The following tips will help you do just that.

1. Have all the labels ready and correctly printed. These should have been provided to you by the company or store from whom you bought the travel crate.

2. Put the sticker which says "Live Animal" on the three sides of the crate with the arrow pointing up. The stickers will typically be of a bright color like orange.

3. Stick the sticker with all the pertinent details of your pet along with the airway bill number and the routing information. It should have the name and contact number of the consignee. This label should go on top of the crate.

4. Put a sticker with the name of your pet in the front above the grill/door.

5. Tie a tag with all the pet details on the grill/door of the crate.

6. Put a bowl of water inside the crate and securely attach it.

7. Attach a funnel outside the grill/door to enable the airline staff to replenish water in the bowl inside.

8. Put any type of absorbent material at the bottom of the crate. You can use foam, old blankets or even newspaper to do so. Avoid using litter as this is not allowed by most airlines.

9. Secure the crate with plastic zip ties on each side. Attach a zip tie to the crate grill/door.

10. You can also attach a plastic bag with one meal for your pet, attach it on the top of the crate. This can be given by the airline staff in case of a long delay or a lay over.

11. You can attach a plastic bag with a leash for your pet if you desire, this should also go on the outside.

12. In case your pet requires medication during the flight, put the medication in a clear plastic bag and mark it properly with the name of the medication and the time at which it has to be given to your pet.

Follow the above given tips to be airline compliant and make the whole process of relocation of your pet that much easier. Your pet will reach the destination healthy and stress free.

k. heres the scoop. im moving by car & moving truck from florida to new york 1,200 miles, 24 hours if i could actually drive straight thru, but i cant. lets say 30 then?
but....
i have 3 cats. i cant stick them into 3 cat carriers for 30 hours, they will need a litter box, and food, and to move (have you seen the size of those cat carriers)
ok, so, dog crate sounds good right? i could put them all in a crate, with a litter box, food, maybe a blanket and what ever.
but here lies the major problem.
pet crates are not made to fit in the back of a car. even if they are long enough, they are too high to fit in my little sedan, on the pulled down seats.
wighth doesnt matter though. so, i think im going to have to custom build them a cage for the back of the car.
but out of what?.even if i could weld (cant) i wouldnt know where to get those bars. and ive seen some in mesh, but they would rip that fast. ideas?? get creative. im no fool, i can build something. but out of what?

Maybe look into the soft dog house made from nylon fabric. You can squeeze it into the back of the car and the it will reshape and it is large enough for all three.

I would also line them with DryFur absorbent cushions they will absorb and dry instantly and they will not get bunched up they lay flat and under the cats. This way it will not get in your car if accident does occur, and it probably will. Plain old Puppy or pet Pads will not work they will be all scrunched up and in a corner in a matter of minutes if cats get uneasy and begin to move about. You have a dog. You need a dog crate. The question is what kind do you want or need? The purposes and functions of a good dog crate can make a big difference not only in the life of your dog, but, more importantly, in the life of the owner. If you need a dog crate that is big and sturdy, then a small soft-sided one just won't do. Obviously, if you need or want a soft-sided model then a large wire heavy duty crate would be impractical. So let's take a look at the types of crates on the market to see what some of the options are, that way you can be sure to find one that will keep you and your dog as happy as possible.

First, the classic wire crates are great for puppy training and for securing your dog. Most models have a removable bottom floor pan that can be hosed off and cleaned. When we trained our last puppy, this was a real benefit. Spread out those newspapers and get to work house training! When the inevitable accidents happen it's no big deal to remove the pan from the dog crate, clean it off and put it back. Another really nice feature to many of these types of crates is that they have multiple doors. When we travel we put our lab in the crate and the crate in the back of the suburban. If the dog crate only had one door on the end it would be a real pain to load and unload the dog. But, since it has a second side door it makes it really simple for him (and us) to get in and out. Some of these wire models can also be broken down and made relatively flat for storage.

Second, and many wire crates fall in this category, there's the folding dog crate that is, not surprisingly, foldable. After all, what color is George Washington's white horse? The main thing to know about this style is that they can be quickly collapsed for storage making them super portable. They are easy to set up and extremely convenient. They still serve the greater purpose of safety and security for your dog. I've seen these electro-coated so that they have an attractive white or black finish. And, of course, they are also available in the standard galvanized steel. The removable pans on these are also available in different materials like galvanized or plastic. This type of dog crate is perfect for uses where wear and tear are heavy, but appearance is important. Most soft sided crates, discussed next, also fall in this category.

Finally, the soft sided dog crate is perfect for many uses. They allow your pet to have a bit more comfort, but perhaps the main benefit to this style is that they are more gentle on your car or home interior. No edges to catch on anything, and they come in lots of fun colors. When you are not using them they can be folded up and put away. One nice thing of this style crate versus the wire crate, is that they are a lot lighter to move or carry! These, like the others, come in small, medium, and large sizes.

Find a dog crate that works for you and your pet. There's lots of them out there to choose from, and you'll be glad you did.

that all depends on if you want to crate train or not.

i personally found that with my small dog crate training was quite helpful and he has come to love the crate.

i suggest starting with a small crate. they need enough room to turn and stand comfortably but that is it. anymore and they will use it for a toilet. as they get older and house trained better, you can transition from their crate to the dog bed. of course, that is when they won't chew stuff while you can't be watching them.

Every dog needs a room of their own to relax and feel secure in. Most often this is a dog crate or kennel. Usually made of metal, wire or plastic it is important to have one that fits your dog.

You want a crate that is large enough so they don't have to duck their head when entering and they can turn themselves around in. Anything bigger and they make a mess relieving themselves in one corner and sleeping in the other. It is possible to get a large one and with dividers and let it grow with your pup.

Now you may think putting your dog in a crate is inhumane and may cause your new furry friend to resent you, but that is simply not the case. Your dog will see the crate as his own room, his security blanket. The crate helps to satisfy the "den instinct" inherited from his den-dwelling ancestors and relatives. Once accustomed to the crate your buddy will feel secure, not frustrated. After all he wants to make you happy and you want to have fun with him.

Besides being a secure place for your dog to rest, these are a great tool for housebreaking. The close confinement will encourage your pup to wait to go until they are taken outside because dogs naturally avoid soiling their den.

They also have many other advantages. You can leave your dog alone and not worry about him destroying things or relieving himself in the house. You can travel in the car safely without worrying about how you are going to get him out from under the seat when you stop.
