What to charge tenants for large dogs?

I own a house and I rent out 2 rooms to friends. I have a small dog & before we moved in one of my roomates got a large breed dog. At first I was ok with it, but it has become a problem because it chews on everything and hes not getting it fixed because he wants to hunt with it. Then I come to find out that my other roomate has to keep his girlfriends largedog for a year because she is leaving the country.

You should definitely ask them for extra money in exchange for them living there with those dogs. If they moved anywhere else, they'd have to pay it.
I know they're your friends, but when it comes to financial matters, you have to use business sense.
And the one roommate's big dog is chewing because it's bored and badly trained. Well trained dogs don't chew. And a fixed dog hunts just as well as an unfixed one.
Personally, I think they are both taking advantage of you, and you're the one who's going to get stuck with the home repairs when they and their dogs move out.
Yes, charge the deposit and the extra rent...and next time you rent your home out, make one of the requirements a signed lease that clearly states NO PETS. I know it's hard to do when the guys are your friends...but if they are real friends, they won't mind that you're protecting yourself and your interests.

Help with food for my large breed puppy?

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rotwieler cross 6 month old puppy. The vets will only recommend Science Plan large breed puppy food but both a sheep dog trainer and the kennels think that 29% is too high for protein content. We've told the vet this and they are still convinced the food is the best dry food we can feed him. Who is correct?

You will most problem find most vet recommend hills science plan. The protein content in the food is high because he is a large breed puppy. he needs to be fed a high protein food as a puppy up until about 12-18 months. If this is not done you have a lot of problems later on in life. The people that you have spoken to are right slightly. if this diet was fed to a small puppy it would be too much. You do not have any thing to worry about. After all the hills science plan has been fully tested and licensed and if it caused problems they wound not be able to sell it! if you are still worried you could change your feed. I use Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Maxi Jr, for my puppy and have no problems and i have used this so many times and recommend it to all my client and they love it! so its up to you from now but the protein content is right for your puppies, age, breed and size.

How do i get my dog to stop attacking people?

I have two dogs, great dane/mastiff and a great dane. My great dane/mastiff was a really great puppy until i had her fixed. Since she's been fixed she has been very protective of me and my property. If anyone comes near my house; let alone knocks on the door she goes berserk. She has bitten one person already, however at the time it was dark out and i thought maybe the person scared her. Either way it is unacceptable behavior. How do i stop this or control it?

Dog barking can be a major problem, especially if it's YOUR dog! If there is anything neighbors hate, it's loud noise coming from your house or garden - not everything is music to one's ears. And dogs barking seemingly without good reason is exceptionally annoying.
Dog barking can be controlled through a number of ways, but as with all forms of dog training, positive reinforcement helps more than hitting your dog or just shouting at him to quiet down. You can try to restrain your dog from barking by using a muzzle, but this won't stop him from whining and in the end, you haven't resolved the noise problem. Sometimes dogs bark for no visible reason, but it's only because they're lonely or restless.
One of the lesser known ways of stopping a dog from barking is by countering noise with noise. How to do this? Put a few coins or pebbles inside a small empty can, and whenever your dog starts barking, take the can in hand and shake it. The noise will startle the dog and make him stop barking. He might start up again in a bit, but just shake the can again; sooner or later your dog will understand what the noise means, and be conditioned to respect it.
If you're keeping a puppy and the poor little thing can't stop barking, take him aside and hold his jaws shut. While you're holding the jaws closed, say "No!" firmly. Release the muzzle once the puppy has calmed down... but if he starts barking again, repeat what you did. Sooner or later he'll get the hint, or will at least be too exhausted to continue barking, then go back to sleep. After a few days of this, your puppy will be sure to understand what "No!" means when he barks.
Special collars are another way to train your pets into behaving - but try to avoid shock collars, except in very extreme cases. Tone or vibration collars won't harm your dog, but ought to work as well. Vibration collars may be smarter, especially if you're keeping more than one dog, since it's quieter. Moreover, tone collars may emit sounds similar to cell phones or other digital devices, and they might end up confusing your dog more than helping him.
Stopping dog barking doesn't have to be a tricky task... however, it is important to remain humane and considerate of your dog, at all costs.

I am 100 pounds, the puppy is already at 70lbs.
Yes- the puppy is a large breed dog. She keeps pulling and I cannot walk with her at all. I am out of breath and my backs and legs are aching after trying to walk. Thus, I need solid advice.

The best way to train a puppy on a leash is to keep control of the situation at all times. Whenever the pup starts jumping around or wants to run off, STOP where you are. Don't take another step. Tell the dog to "heel" and direct her back to your side. As soon as the dog settles down, praise her and start walking again. If she tries to take off STOP again, give her the heel command, and direct her back to your side. If her misbehavior on the leash continues for more than 15 minutes, say "no walks", turn around and go back home. (Continue to STOP walking any time she tries to bolt.)

Don't hit her or yell at her. This will just make "walking" painful, aggravating and frightening for her. Just tell her "no walks" and go back home. Never allow her to drag you around.

If you consistently use this STOP technique, the dog will soon learn that misbehaving on her walks makes the walk end, and cuts off her time outside with you.

All responsible dog owners need a leash when taking your dog for a walk. In many cases a proper leash is used at home especially if your dog is aggressive towards friends, strangers other family members and or pets.

Several options are available depending on your needs. They should fit correctly and be adjusted for comfort while wearing the leash. Always make them wear a collar and leash in public places for safety with the ID and rabies tags, just in case they get loose.

When the collar and leash is new try it inside first, then in the yard if you have one followed by short public strolls and observe behavior carefully for a few days. If your dog gets loose and injures someone or another animal often law suits follow, NOT GOOD! That's why the correct collar and leash is critical. Don't be tempted if their pulling you around, this is a common trap many folks fall into after nearly having their arm yanked out of its socket.

Many leash and collar options are available now using more advanced technology. The chest leash offers better control, the retraceable leashes are popular now but can still be a problem if you let your dog have to much of a lead always use caution as sudden excitement can cause trouble. A shorter, maybe 6 foot lead is advisable.

Collar options:

In the old days and even now, dogs were trained primarily with choke chain collars and while this is a tool option it is not considered the best choice nowadays. There are alternative choices we have today for training dogs, like head halter collars and no pull halters each having it's devoted followers as does the simple buckle collar.

Controversy surrounds another type of training collar and it has been deemed by many as being cruel and inhumane. This type collar is better known as the prong collar. It looks like a dungeon torture chamber device, but it is really a kinder, gentler tool for many dogs and helps stop your dog from pulling your arm off. It is not right for all dogs, but it works quite well on anxious, strong or dogs that seem to have a high endurance for pain.

Prong collars are often the most misunderstood of the training options available today. They are not recommended for daily use and are not designed for very aggressive dogs. They are too hard on dogs that act scared or show fear once outside their comfort zone. This collar is not for young pups, however they are often used carefully by expert trainers for older pups.

The pinch or prong collar is made of interlocked metal links, each with two blunt prongs that pinch the dog's neck skin when the collar is tugged on. They pinch similar to you pinching your own skin. They press evenly around the neck and they will not penetrate or break the skin.

Some companies now have rubber tips, in my experience they reduce efficiency. Your dog needs to feel the pointed prongs and the rubber simply acts as padding thereby stopping the prongs from doing their job. Putting rubber tips on the prongs means they are too sharp to begin with (test a metal one before buying with your own finger tips) FYI if the rubber tip comes off you may hurt your dog.

Prong/pinch collars are not for daily use and should only be used a few times for training purposes mostly. Although for more hard headed dogs it often takes a little longer. Remain calm yet assertive, and consistent because typically dogs are just a mirror our own emotions and actions.

Often trainers only use the pinch/prong collar on large dominant breeds, but the choices of course are made by the owner and the dogs personal relationship, show respect and your dog will give respect. Prong collars are not status symbols, or jewelry and should not be used as such.

Always set your dog up for success, this helps build confidence, and the rewards are a calm submissive state which allows you to live in harmony and peace with your best friend.

Which of these puppy foods would be best for a German Shepherd?

I just got a German Shepherd a week ago. Currently, she is eating purina large breed puppy chow and she's kinda thin and a picky eater. I was very angry to discover that Purina LARGE BREED PUPPY CHOW does NOT have glucosamine or chondrotin in it---ISNT THAT THE WHOLE POINT OF LARGE BREED FORMULAS? but if you wanna firm up your thighs (which i think look fine)
do these
front thigh lifts:(targets front of thighs)
sit on the ground legs straight out infront of you and raise right leg (leg still straight) then lower, but dont touch the ground, do 15, 3 sets. on each leg
inner thigh deep lunge:(targets inner thigh)
get dumbells, you dont need them but it works better, i use 8lbs ones
stand with feet together in the middle holding dumbell, now lunge right leg to the side and touch the dumbell to the floor, you should be able to feel your inner thigh muscles working, do 15, 3 sets, each leg.
hamstring curls:(targets hamstrings)
lay on the ground with your legs propped up on your bed or a chair formed into a 90 degree angle
now tighten hamstrings and stomach and raise body of the ground so your balancing on shoulders and feet

i do these and my thighs are much more firm, but i still need to lose weight >.<

Any size dog can develop hip dysplasia. It was often thought that only the larger breed of dogs are susceptible to hip dysplasia, but that's not true. Large breeds are more prone to getting hip dysplasia, but many of the small breeds can also be affected.

Veterinarians have treated hip dysplasia with drugs and even surgery. If you have a breed that is susceptible to hip dysplasia, there are several things you can do to try to prevent it, or at least slow down the process.

1. While she is still a pup, feed the fast growing puppy well, but don't over do it. A leaner pup is better because she doesn't have to carry around the extra weight that puts stress and strain on her hips.

2. A low-mineral diet would be the better choice for young dogs that are at risk for hip dysplasia. This is because it contains less calcium and in most cases, has a better balance of electrolytes than usual. There are several diets available by prescription, just ask your Veterinarian.

3. Do not give calcium supplements. Yes, pups do need calcium, but not calcium supplements. Puppy foods already contain lots of calcium. Calcium supplements can actually interfere with the normal development of cartilage and bones in large dogs.

4. Exercise is good as long as it's not over-done. Swimming is a great way to exercise your dog because it helps reduce the wear and tear on the joints. Take the dog for a long walk as part of her daily exercise.

Showing signs of hip dysplasia

If your dog has already developed signs of hip dysplasia, there are still some things you can do to help relieve the pain.

1. Again, keep the weight down and keep her moving. Once or twice a day let her outside with you while you do yard work, or take her on a walk around the block for 10-20 minutes. Rest is important too; as it can help the hips feel better if she is hurting too much that day.

2. Ask your Veterinarian to recommend some over-the-counter drugs that would be good for her pain. When or if the pain worsens, she will probably have to be put on stronger prescription drugs.

3. Make sure she has a warm, dry place to sleep. Place extra rugs or blankets for her to sleep on. My old guy sleeps on the bed or on the extra blankets I've placed on the floor at the foot of the bed.

4. Give your older dog a gentle massage around the hip joints to help ease the stiff and sore joints.

To help you make the right decision

A while back I read an article about hip dysplasia that said if you are looking for a puppy, you should check out what breed of dogs are more acceptable to hip dysplasia before making your decision, and check to make sure the pups comes from a "family" with no history of hip dysplasia for at least 3 generations back.

Although that is good advice, there are no guarantees. If one of the parents had hip dysplasia in the past, she may have had puppies that were free from hip dysplasia, but these pups could be "carriers" of this disease and may show up in their offspring in later generations - but in my opinion, breeding 2 dogs together with good hips is the most logical and ethical thing to do. Through selective breeding, we can greatly reduce the incidence of hip dysplasia.

Recipe for Liver Muffin Treats for Dogs?

I bought some "liver muffins" at the mall for my dog. They have a wonderful dog bakery there. My dogs absolutely loved them, but they were so expensive. I paid $3.50 per muffin! I was wondering if anybody could find or create a recipe for me for liver muffins for my dogs? I can't use beef or beef liver, and I can't use dairy. My Bergamasco dog is very allergic to both. Corn, wheat, and soy are all fine. None of my dogs have allergies to any of those. I've tried looking online and can't find a recipe for this. I really love to bake for my dogs, and it saves money too.

1 pound of chicken livers
1/4 cup oil
1/2 cup water
3 or more cloves of garlic
2+ cups of rice flour/ or oats or mixture of both
optional extras: bacon bits, grated cheese
Place liver, oil, water, garlic and the optional extras in a blender or food processor, and blitz. Pour them into a bowl, add flour until you have a stiff but sticky batter. Pour into greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for at least 1 hour. After 1 hour cut a small slice and if any pink is showing, return it to the oven for about 15 minutes more. Must be well done.

When you are trying to train your pet you will need a ready supply of canine motivational incentives, otherwise known as treats. The use of dog treats as a training motivator is nothing new to pet trainers, and for good reason. To your dog these tasty treats can be quite an effective training tool. Unfortunately there does seem to be some confusion over the difference of what is classified as a doggy treat and a dog "training" treat. Let's take a moment to clarify the difference.

First thing to keep in mind is that anything your feed your dog outside of their normal feeding time can be considered a treat. Whether your feeding him Twinkies (not good), or beefy chews (good), extra food is looked at as a reward. What makes a dog training treat special is that you should only use those specific treats during training sessions.

If you are rewarding your dog for normal daily good behavior, or when you simply feel the need to give your pet a tasty treat, then by all means give them a treat they will enjoy, but be careful, as too many rewards given for no effort diminishes the effectiveness of each reward.

But when you are actively training your pets, you will want to use a superior quality treat. Pick something that they will absolutely go nuts for. Simple generic biscuits might just not be enough to get your dog to do stuff. Break out the dried liver treats or the chicken jerky. You want you pet's undivided attention when you're training them, and what better way then to use treats they gobble right up. Make sure that your pet is performing the required tasks before he gets this treat.

I keep a jar full of regular treats, much about the consistency of their normal food. They get these for going in their crates at night or as a simple reward. When training I will use a single piece of human quality jerked chicken. One piece can be broken into smaller pieces and will last an entire 30 minute training session. The response is often enough to cause the dog to forget about additional distractions, like the other dogs in the kennel.

We're not talking keeping an entire cupboard of separate treats, but you should separate them so your dog can learn the difference between them. When your dog is getting rewarded all the time from normal treats, you have to step up the treat for better responsiveness during training sessions. This is not rocket science; just have two sets of treats, one normal and one of a much higher quality.
