Do you think some of the pet owners on the board go a little over board?

I notice the pet responses are overwhelmingly critical. One lady was asking what adult breed she should adopt (from a shelter) and she mentioned that 5 days a week she was out or 9 hours and almost everyone told her not to get a dog. Well.. does that mean any single person with a full time job shouldn't get a pet? And, even if we're not working aren't we all gone for gaps through out the day? Surely adoption and crate training is better than death.. or even adopting a house broken dog?

I think people here can be slightly judgemental about peoples pet care abilities. I think though lots of those people base their comments on a "perfect world" scenario. There is still a lot of useful information here, you just have to be a bit thick skinned about some of the responses.

Please consider the following reasons why most any pet owner, especially a dog owner should seriously consider making a dog crate part of the household. These are not listed in order of importance. You must decide which benefit is most important to you.

- A place of their own when visitors are present in the home—at this writing the holiday season is quickly approaching which means house guests. Many pets get nervous when company comes. Many owners get nervous for their pets when company visits. Many times the pets end up locked in another room or outside. A dog crate provides your pet with a safe place of their own to retreat into while visitors are present.

- Food and holidays go hand in hand. You know what you want your dog to eat and what foods are restricted. Your visitors will not know what your pet feeding rules are. If your pet is safely in their crate then no unwanted food will be given to your pet that could make them seriously ill or worse. If you have experienced that severe situation then you know what I am referring to.

-Vacation time—How great would it be to have your pet riding with you in the car, in his dog crate, safe, secure, resting out of harms way and just enjoying life as you enjoy the open road.

- Many people love camping and of course we always take our dogs along. Dog crates allow you to relax in the knowledge that your pet or pets are safe and secure in their dog crates when you are not exercising them or engaging is some other interaction directly with them. Your dogs know this crate to be their sleeping area, the same one they had at home, so they are comfortable in it. They will not wonder away. They will not get lost. You know exactly where they are.

- If you show your dogs you probably already know how great it is to have your dog resting in his or her dog crate while you are watching the show or talking to other exhibitors, a great example for the rest of us.

- If you have an older pet they want and require a place to rest that is safe and secure. If you have younger pets in the home this is often a problem for the older dog. Enter the dog crate, their own space, their bed, their safe place to rest away from the others that may want to jump and play instead of rest.

- Now I will say just a bit about puppies and dog crates. There is tons of information available on crate training your puppy so we will not go into that here except to say that crate training your puppy will change your life and theirs for the better.

- Unfortunately our pets occasionally require surgery for some reason. How great would it be to have a place where your crate trained dog could rest in safety while recuperating? That is just another very important use for your dog crate.

Pet crates and pet carriers are not punishment for your pet. Once you have successfully crate trained your pet they will enjoy their crate for the rest of their lives. Never use the crate for punishment. This is counter productive to your goals.

Some people can't believe that a dog can be litter box trained. This is a good idea if the dog is a condo dog, or a high rise dog. If the owner of the dog is elderly or handicap this may also play a role.. I have also known people who have there dog go in the house at a particular place in the garage. They just don't like to pooper-scoop and plastic bag after their dog. The pooper scooper laws are getting out of hand, and even in areas where there are no pooper scooper laws some people enjoy a yard that is well groomed and free of feces, for there children to play in. In any case litter box training your pooch is an option. Litter box training is a bit different from crate training or paper training in that the dog will be conditioned to know that eliminating in the house is okay provided that the excrement is in the box. Litter box (or LB) training does not necessarily mean that a LB will be the object. For a dog, especially a big dog a certain spot in the garage on newspapers may be a form of litter box training.  There are 2 goals to LB training. 

1. The dog is conditioned to go both outdoors and in the litter box, or
2. The dog is conditioned to only go in the litter box.

The Solely Indoor Dog. Before 3-4 months of age the dog does not posses the bladder and bowel control necessary to be successfully housebroken. The litter box will remain in the same place as where it starts so make sure you choose wisely.

1. Select an area that has an easy to clean floor surface. Make sure it is free of hazards and excessive distraction.
2. It is best to use an enclosed area. If you do not have one, purchase a gate of some sort to close off an area. This area should be completely lined with newspaper. Covering the entire floor surface.
3. As a rough guideline a small or toy dog the area should be about 4x6 feet.
4. Larger puppies will require 6x8.
5. Once you've got the area lined with newspaper put the litter box in it. Also, put the same lining in the litter box. In this case newspaper.
6. At this time you can add a dog bed, food and water, and safe chew toy.
7. As you observe your pup, you should praise it every time it goes on the paper.
8. Since the entire area is covered in paper for the first few days this will be every time it goes.
9. After 2 or 3 days, remove a small piece of the paper leaving one area that is not covered in paper. As time goes on continue to praise the dog when it goes on the paper.
10. After about 5 or 6 days you should notice a preferred area on the paper. Put the litter box in that spot.
11. If the pup goes on the floor that is not covered (we will call this the no no area) you must give a verbal reprimand. But, YOU MUST SEE this action. Do not reprimand the dog if you do not SEE it go on the floor. The dog will not associate the reprimand with weeing on the floor and it will get confused.
12. The newspaper covered area should gradually diminish in the direction of the box.

With appropriate praise the puppy should have a clear idea of the owner's intentions. When the dog goes in the box for several straight days, you can take down the gate.

My dog licks clean laundry-He's obsessed with the smell! WhY?

He sits by the dryer, when you open the door he licks the air and the laundry. When I'm folding laundry- he's right there licking it.....why?

he should be on tv in the laundry commercials that people are always smelling the clean clothes,lol there must be someting that makes him really like the odor from the soap u are using, my border collie will go and get wet facecloths out of the laundry room and roll on them or even when i go to put them in the dryer she will sneak a wet one and toss it around them i find it later all squished up from rolling on it.i guess its something that they like in the odors or feel of the clothes that make them do weird things.

To train your puppy, one has to be patient in your ways and approaches. One of the most important aspects of dog training is to provide an enclosure to the dog in the contour of using a crate. Puppy housebreaking is a common practice and a crate serves as an effective tool to provide success in your puppy potty training. Other than taking care of housebreaking, the crate enables the dogs to decrease its anxiety of separation, and prevents behaviors, which may be destructive. Another advantage to train your puppy with the crate is mostly during stays in hotels and while traveling. It is preferable if the dog gets crate training at an early stage. However, one has to ensure that crates are not a means to punish the pups or as a confinement for them. Crate training discourages indoor dog potty . It aids the dog throughout its lifetime and helps it is helpful tool for all concerned as well. One can remove the door of the crate also once the dog gets used to it. Vari-Kennel type If your puppy accepts the crate without hesitation, there is no need to use this technique. Otherwise you can remove the screws of the crate that would open the door and let the puppy go inside and outside at her/his free will. This would train your puppy against crate potty as well. Though it may take few days, your hard work would surely be beneficial in a long run.

Wire Mesh type Train your puppy by keeping open the doors of the crate by tying its door to the back. This would give enough space for the puppy to more freedom and would not give him a sense of seclusion and confinement.

Furnishing Crate to make it attractive for your puppy

Toys and Treats: Ensure that the toys and balls that you place in the crate are not too small that your pet could swallow them. In addition, one can put a marrow bone by sterilizing it and filling it with dog treats.

Water: A water dispenser is necessary in the crate and continuously refilled.

Bedding: Bedding is important to make your pet’s crate comfortable and cozy, so your puppy feels like she/he is in her/his den. It is furthermore important during winters to provide extra soft bedding.

Location of Crate Try and place the crate close where you are sitting. This will train your puppy to go automatically inside his/her crate without feeling lonely and isolated.

Introducing the Crate to Your Puppy Train a puppy to enjoy in his crate by: • Keep hiding dog biscuits in the crate to let him find edible treasures and enjoy. • Praising pet when it enters the crate is an important aspect to train your puppy and dogs. • Play educational games with it while training, make it fun • Crate your puppy/dog only when you are at home initially, so your puppy will feel comfortable. Then as your puppy/dog is enjoying his/her new crate you can try short period's of times when you are outside, or close to home for your puppy/dog to be crated.?

Things to keep in mind while Crate training Collars: Remove the collar from your puppy prior to putting your puppy/dog going into the crate as it may get stuck in the mesh wired crate. Weather: When weather is not comfortable, avoid crating your puppy/dog.

Anyone have leather furniture and a large dog?

Ok, Ive had it with cloth sofas and dog hair. I was wondering if I bought a leather set would it be easier to keep clean? My dogs are not allowed on the couches but, you know they get up there when no human is home. My dogs range from 209 to 9 lbs. Do you think trimmed nails would be a problem? Anyone else ever try this?

Leather is the only way to go, however, being 'leather' it doesn't take long for one of them to decide they are OK to chew on. It is incredible how fast a leather couch can disappear with a big dog. None of our dogs have been big chewers, even as puppies. All are crate trained and put away if we are gone for any length of time.

Our last couch was fine for months. When I jumped in the shower one day and came back out the couch was destroyed. I don't even know which one did it, but I have my suspicions. We never had that problem with a cloth couch. We stopped using cloth because of dog smell and hair.

We keep our dogs nails dremmled so we have not had that problem of scratching.

Leather is really easy to clean. Also with cloth furniture, when you are used to your own dogs, you don't notice how much your house smells like dog because the dog that is not allowed on the furniture get on there when you are not looking. Your guests notice.

With indoor dogs, leather furniture if possible, no carpet if possible. The house is easier to clean and will always smell better.

Before you start for your first dog show there are certain pieces of equipment you will need. One is a strong collar that fits your dog well; either round leather, flat leather, or a chain. Another item you will need is a bench chain.

A bench chain is just what its name implies - used to chain a dog to the bench, snapping onto the ring in the collar and to the ring provided for that purpose on the bench. When fastening the dog to the bench, be sure to leave enough chain so that the dog can lie down but not long enough to allow him to jump off the bench, as he could possibly hang himself.

You will also need a show lead. A show lead is usually much finer than the leads used for walking a dog. Before purchasing a show lead, find out what type is used by the successful exhibitors in your breed. In some breeds the dogs are exhibited on the same chain collar used for benching with a fine leather snap-on lead attached to it.

In some breeds the exhibitors prefer leather one-piece leads. I say leather, but this type one-piece show lead is made up in whalehide, lacing, nylon belting, and many other materials. In the toy breeds some exhibitors use a nylon string, which is no heavier than the lead of a pencil. Terriers are almost always shown on a leather collar and lead.

You will need a sponge, and if you have a liking for the synthetic ones, they will do very nicely. You will want to take along a towel an - old one will do. Your dog will have been bathed before being brought to the show, if he is of a breed that requires bathing, but if he becomes carsick and drools over himself, or if he walks through a puddle and then through dust or dirt, the sponge and towel will help you clean him before taking him into the ring.

If you are sure that you have done every necessary bit of trimming at home perhaps it will not be necessary to carry trimming tools with you. However, a great many people find it advisable to carry with them at least a few trimming tools for those last-minute repairs. A pair of scissors, perhaps a small stripping knife, and any other one or two tools you are fond of for trimming in your breed may come in handy. A comb and brush are necessities, and will be very welcome just before you go into the ring.

A good crate is optional. It may have one or two drawers I which you can transport the above equipment. Your crate should be a wooden one which is well ventilated with holes or openings close to the top in order to let out the heat. I believe the wooden crates are superior to the aluminum ones for show purposes.

The first few times a dog rides to a show in a crate it is wise to line the floor of the crate with newspapers and then tear some newspapers in strips on top of the lining. If the dog gets carsick you can empty all the papers at one time.

The torn strips will help keep the dog clean until you get to your destination. Because of their small size they tend to cover over any moisture or soil. Later on you will probably line the floor of the crate with an old turkish towel. Newspaper has the one disadvantage of leaving smudges on a light-colored dog

Is there any way to limit the barking of my dogs without hurting them?

My dogs bark A LOT! I love them, but it gets a little annoying. I don't approve of those bark collars or the old fashioned newspaper. Is there a nicer way to handle this? I've tried a squirt bottle but it seems to be inaffective.

This all depends...if your dogs are outdoor dogs, there won't be any way for you to limit. If they are indoor dogs, there are a few things that you can try. Try teaching them to "speak" on command. When they bark, say "good speak!" and reward them with treats. Repeat this process until they are barking when you say "speak!" Once they have that down, teach them the "quiet" command. You can then use the quiet command as soon as they start to bark. This worked for my brother's dogs but they aren't dogs that are known for yipping.

Bark collars are ineffective. The dogs eventually get used to the pain and bark through it. My neighbors still keep the collar on their dog, but it doesn't stop him. That is what happens with the water as well. They get used to being squirted and don't even notice it after awhile. Hitting a dog only teaches them that you are a painful person to be around. I'm glad that you don't want to use either of these methods. If you are willing to put in the work with your dogs, you will likely be able to break them of this habit.

Unfortunately, if you have a breed that is known to bark a lot, you may be out of luck. Good luck!

A lot can depend upon the reason for the dog barking. Do you have to leave for work each day and leave him, if so it is probably separation anxiety that is causing him to bark off and on, possibly for hours after you leave. This is a very good case for using a bark collar. At least you would know that when you weren't there the dog was making a nuisance of himself and annoying your neighbors because the barking would cease obviously when you returned.

Is the barking because of delivery people, for instance the mailman. Most dogs will bark at a mailman and they will have it firmly fixed in their heads that he leaves because they have barked - they are responsible for getting rid of him! So - the next time the mailman arrives they will bark again, to send the man away again.

Whatever the reason, gratuitous barking is a big problem and a considerable nuisance and annoyance to everyone, even the owner. Except of course if the barking is because the dog is suffering pain, this will induce barking and this is definitely not a situation where you would use a no bark collar, you need to find out why the dog is in pain.

One type of bark collar is a sonic collar which is suitable for any size of dog from very small to quite large. Some can actually be attached to the dog's normal collar.

There are even collars which are a combination of sonic sound and vibration, the collar has a little inbuilt computer which analyzes input. This eradicates the collar being set off accidentally by other sounds or vibrations from other dogs jostling the one who is being trained. This is the most advanced bark control collar ever made.

Perhaps you prefer to go for an anti-bark collar which you consider to be more humane, i.e. a Citronella spray collar. This collar has a container of lemon scented liquid which, when the collar detects the dog is barking, sends a spray of the Citronella in front of the dog's nose. As dog's are not fond of this scent he will soon learn to stop barking, he will have associated this smell he doesn't like with his barking and stop.

How do you get a collar to differentiate between nuisance barking and protection barking? I think the answer to this is that it cannot, if the dog barks incessantly for no apparent reason, this would be construed as nuisance barking. If he barks when he hears a noise of some sort, this is protective barking. So, presumably you would only use a collar if your dog fell into the first category, that of barking virtually non-stop for no good reason. Don't fall out with your neighbors because of your dog, train your dog and keep on good terms with those around you.

Best way to potty train German Shepard Puppy?

Amelia is the newest addition to our family and shes a great puppy with the exception of potty training her. We have a crate for her that we keep in doors and she sleeps in it and goes in as she pleases. We bring her outside almost every 1-2 hours with the exception of night and when we have to go to work and my husband and I cant get to the house then its 3-4 hours. Any how no matter what Amelia will run around the house go outside then run in to her crate and go potty only in there!!! She treats it as a toilet. We have a clicker so she hears that noise when she goes outside. We let her know what good girl she is and we ignore her bad habit per dog training books. I think our issue is the breeder we bought her from would keep the pups and mom in an outdoor crate 24-7 (very sad) and just spray it down once a day. I think my pup thinks thats how it is. But our crate is indoor and we dont want that!!! Please help! Thanks!

Somebody SHOULD have been home with her 24/7 for at least the first week, preferably fortnight. I expect house-training & toilet training almost completed during the first day, but it takes longer to ensure that the pup is quite certain about what to do.
And I disapprove of crates except for travelling or to protect the dog from unruly children who were badly raised by a visitor.
When no-one is home, the dog should be in an escape-proof roofed outdoor run that is at least 12 ft between gate and raised sleeping box, so that it has room to bounce around, can choose to sleep in the shade or in the sun, can go toilet whenever it wants, and can safely experience the scents, sounds & movements of the environment - far more interesting than in a crate or locked in a room!

• Toilet training consists primarily of YOU learning your pet's timing and signals, and responding to them by picking the pup up and carrying it to the designated patch of newspaper or yard, then staying there silently until the pup does what you're out there for, and THEN praising the pup enthusiastically, using its name plus the word that will eventually become a command - eg , "Good girl TOILET, Amelia!" (I recommend shortening her call-name to just 2 syllables - maybe Amy or Meelee.) NO games out there until after she's been toilet. No coaxing or movement from you. Not until AFTER she's worked out why she's there.

• A 7-8 weeks old puppy will probably give its toilet signal one minute after waking up, 3 minutes after a meal - but pups vary, and the period extends as the pop ages.
• Commonest signal is a nose-down circling as it chooses the best spot to squat on.

Your crate now being saturated with toilet odours, it is going to need high powered cleaning and a prolonged exposure to the elements.
And as she has learned to mess inside, you are going to have to start from scratch. Carry a balled-up sock or a lightweight tennis ball at all times. If your observation is slack and she has crouched before you realised, stamp your foot beside her before picking her up and carrying her outside as above - that serves to startle her into stopping, but if she piddles on your hands, so what?
If she is out of reach, throw the sock and time your stamp to sound as the sock hits her - the purpose isn't to hurt her, just to convince her that you have an incredibly long invisible arm.

I hope you have already booked yourself in to a training class that starts as soon as possible after she turns 18 weeks old. There you will be coached to improve your technique, and your pup will learn to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.
Prior to that, all her training is to be by patient reinforcement of her actions - praise that includes the eventual command word, plus a simultaneous reward, some examples being:
• pats, or rubs on croup or chest or ear-bases;
• a game of ball-chase or tug-o-war;
• a tiny tidbit such as a salted peanut, a sliver of hard cheese or baked liver or crisped bacon or cooked hot-dog.
Note: Tidbits should be so tiny that they supply barely a smell & taste, leaving the dog keen to earn another, and another.

And you cannot have a "German Shepard" - there is no farm task called ARDing. My breed was developed to HERD sheep in the German boundary patrolling way, so is the German Shepherd Dog - 3 words, or GSD for short.

We have 5 indoor cats. They have their own room, in our home, with 2 cat condos & 3 automatic litter boxes. They very generously share it with my desk, computer & filing cabinet. In order to give them "safe" access to the outside, we built them a two room outdoor kennel, connected to our house. We have several bird feeders around for them to watch (sort of like kitty TV).

1. In the back wall of "their" room is a pet door.

2. Attached to the pet door, on the outside is a walkway the size of the door, enclosed with chicken wire, which attaches to an entry hole cut in the kennel wire.

3. Attached to the walkway is a 2" X 6" X 5' long board, covered with sisal rope descending to the ground inside the kennel.

4. The kennel has two rooms constructed by erecting two 7'W X 13' L X 6'H dog kennels.

5. A secure roof is made by constructing 2 sections of roof, per room, 8' X 4' of 2" X 2" wood frame & 1 sheet of corrugated PVC plastic cut in 2 sections & attached to the roof to allow water to flow off the roof.

6. These two sections are attached in the center of each room to form the pitched roof. A section of pipe, like the kennel frame, is attached to the top of the kennel frame with risers, making the center of the roof about 8" taller than the sides, allowing for the pitch of the roof. The roof sections are attached by strapping the frame of each roof section to the center pipe with long electrical ties.

7. Since the pitch in the roof leaves openings at each end, between the roof & the kennel top rail, a plastic mesh material is attached in the opening to prevent escape.

Cats love to climb trees, so, sections of cut tree limbs are configured in each room of the kennel to give them trees to climb & allowing space on each where they can lay & watch their outside world around them. Also in the kennel is a perch with scratching posts.

I designed two outside condos made of plastic dairy crates that will be weatherproof. Sides were cut out to make tunnels through which the cats can walk and then ascend to the next level. The first condo is four levels high. Each level has at least one crate on the end where a cat can lay. They can also lay inside each crate forming the tunnel. Since dairy crates have no solid sides, to each horizontal exposed crate surface I have attached a square piece of plastic with a square of outdoor carpet glued to it. This gives them the solid surface on which to walk or lay. The condos are created by strapping the crates together with electrical ties. These are strong and will last indefinitely.

Pee pads vs Litter box vs indoor potty system (like the Ugodog)?

we want to have an alternative for going outside - just in case. We thought the litter box would be the best method... but is another system better, in your opinion?
our pup has always been pretty darn receptive to different tricks and commands. and, well, we're willing to "undo" the training we did, especially since there have been a large amount of success stories. the benefits outweigh the risks.

I would avoid a litter box, dogs don't like to bury their waste like cats do, and puppies LOVE to eat cat litter, so it would probably just turn into a safety issue for him. (We had to move our cat box to another, baby-gated room when we got our puppy because he couldn't keep his mouth out of it). Pee Pads would be easy to clean (no litter in the mouth or scattered around the floor), and there are actual pad holders that clip the corners down so the dogs can't get a hold of the edges:

Anyone ever tried the WizDog Indoor Dog Potty?

Does it work? Do you use anything similar? Does it make sense to train a dog to "go" on it rather than outdoors as a start and then transition them to "go" outdoors?

I've never used that item, but I can try to answer your other questions. It is harder to train a dog to go inside and then train them to go outside than it is to train them to go outside right from the start.

One of the big reasons housebreaking works is because the dog develops a clear understanding of his living space and his potty place; dogs don't like them both to be the same place. But developing this boundary is harder when they are first trained to go inside and then need to learn to go outside.

That said, my mom trained her dog with newspapers in record time. Research the different methods for potty training and see what works best for you and your lifestyle. And always remember that dogs can be retrained if your first try didn't work.
