My two Vizsla hunting dogs get home dog food twice a day. I mix an adjusted amount with good quality kibble and dry.

Would training my dog in agility maybe curb some of his agressive tendancies?

He'll be a year old on the 27th of this month. He's an Australian shepherd, he HATES children, anyone under, say, 9, and he doesn't like anyone else except for people who come around to our house on a regular basis. He's not dog agressive, though.

Has your dog been to a group Obedience class? How did he do in that kind of a situation? I can' t really see Agility training helping a dog with people aggression. I have tried to do some beginning, basic Agility training with dogs with fear aggression. Not something those dogs enjoyed. These dogs were very afraid, could never relax, spent all their class time cowering, running off & trying to leave, barking, growling & lunging at people & the other dogs. And something as simple as trying to help their owner with them on the obstacles caused them to snap. Even in an Agility training class, there are 8-10 new people & some of them may even be kids. And the people are running & yelling & laughing & clapping. The dogs are running & jumping & playing & barking. The instructor & assistants often need to work closely with you & touch your dog to help you help them with the obstacles at first. A lot of stuff that would scare a dog like yours & tend to set them off. Your dog would be doing most of this work off leash too, so you wouldn't be able to control his behavior. It would just be a recipe for disaster in my opinion.
What I recommend is a Vet evaluation to make sure there isn't a medical reason for your dog's aggression. Then have your Vet recommend a canine behaviorist to evaluate the dog. Maybe the behaviorist can come up with a training plan that can help your dog with his aggression issues. Until then placing the dog in a training class of any kind isn't in my opinion fair to your dog, you or any of the other dogs & handlers in the class.

Those planning to institute a regimen of dog agility training need to be prepared to donate a lot of time, effort and praise on teaching their dog the tricks of the agility trade. A competition of a dog’s agility goes beyond simple handling by command and begun in England patterned after certain horse competitions, dog agility training takes into account fence jumping, teeter-totter, wing jumps a tire jump and more. The idea is to have the dog complete the course, in a prescribed order with only voice commands given by the handler. The tricky part is the 100-foot square course and its obstacles are set the day of the show and the handler is allowed one walk through to become familiar with the layout.

Most believe that dog agility training should be done one obstacle at a time and once the dog successfully and repeatedly is able to overcome an obstacle, it can move onto the next one. Attempting to have the animal run a full compliment of obstacles everyday during training may cause the animal to become confused on the day of competition.

Dog And Handler Must Agree To Work Together

Similar to a dog show, the handler is not always the dog’s owner, rather the handler is the one who has administered the dog agility training and to whom the dog faithfully listens. However, the dog must be of the right temperament for agility competition and one that will not be intimidated by the obstacles. A shy or timid dog would not fare well when faced with obstacles and probably will not perform well.

In dog agility training the handler will have to know what motivates the dog to want to please the handler. The dog and the handler must both be in good enough physical condition to complete the obstacle course as, although no physical contact is permitted, the handler typically stays with the dog through the course, giving the voice commands.

The event is judged based on correctly completing the obstacles and is a timed event so speed is of the essence, as well as the dog being able to recognize each obstacle and know exactly how to meet it quickly.

my dog chews everything, now my kitchen linoleum is half way gone, help before he eats my whole house?

we are gone to work 8 hours a day. He stays behind babygate and has medium size area to roam. has lots of toys and chews. He prefers shoes and electronic cords. His favorite being his dad's x-box 360 headsets. He has survived a speaker with magnet attached in stomach via 1 1/2 weeks. He near bout choked when he finally rid himself of it. He destroys things constantly, not just while we are away. He can you eat you out of house & home while you are 2 feet away. My boyfriend is ready to evict him. But my Shadow Bug (aka 8 mnth old Beagle) is my world. Please help my please to find a way for Shadow to stay peacefully and worry free.

In a nutshell, a tired puppy is a happy puppy. You need to do a few things for him.

One- he is given far too much space to roam around and cause havoc. I would be crate training him. Here is a link to crate training- http://www.wolfweb.com.au/acd/cratetraining.htm

Secondly, I would start basic obedience with him. Beagles are very food motivated so make sure he has lots of treats as praise. I would also join an Obedience training group near you. Beagles are hunting dogs and are bred to be busy little people, this is why he is destructive.

Thirdly, eight hours is a long time for him to be left on his own. I would ask a neighbour to come in and let him out half way through the day and give him a good long game in the garden.

Fourthly (is there such a word) Exercise him with a good game and a romp prior to leaving for work and as soon as you get home.

Fifthly (these words are getting weirder) when he is at home alone, give him things he CAN chew. Try these links...I can highly recommend a Kong stuffed with cat meat and peanut butter!

Can't afford them? Take a plastic softdrink bottle, cut a few holes in it and tip in a handful of kibble. Let him roll it around to shake the kibble out. If he gets too good at it, add a good spoonful of nutty butter.

My male aussie has been breaking out of his kennel and urinating on my bed & furniture after a move. Help?

We recently moved into a new house. just when I thought he might be settling in - he started even worse behavior. he has always had a kennel (wire/see through) & seemed to enjoy "his" space. During a recent storm he tore it apart. Afraid he would injure himself, I replaced it with a carrier type( plastic sides) for his confort & saftey. He promptly ripped the door off. He has become obsesive with play time(won't put the frisby down and come in) and now is urinating in the middle of my bed. (not "marking", but saturating) and furniture.
I have tried longer walks & exercise & affection, eventrying "calming" aids from Fosters and Smith. And have not had much luck. He is a family pet & loved very much - but I am out of ideas and at my witts end. Any suggestions? Please help!

Stray dog with a tight collar?

Hunting season has been over for some time in our area. We are used to getting stray hunting dogs in our yard if we can we will catch them put them in our pen and call the name on the collar. they come pick the dog up within a day. This year we have a large brown/black deer dog he's pretty and he's not violent or anything he is just really skiddish. Well we couldn't get near him we would leave food out for him to eat and water. he's been here for quite a few months. we don't have a local pound he's not bothering anyone. i don't want him gone but if he does have an owner i'd like to get him back home. his collar is tight on him and he won't let us near him to take it off or loosen it. We don't have animal control and they would just kill him how else do i get the collar off?
We do have animal control in a different county but they won't come out here. because we live so far out i've tried and i have called.

You have to find assistance...........whether it be an Animal Control, Humane Society, dog rescue support, a local Vet, or other to aid you in getting that collar loostened up. Otherwise it will choke him and he will not be able to breathe nor swallow properly. There are and must be some options. You can even call outside the area for verbal assistance in this area.

Keeping track of your dog when it is off it leash can be nerve racking at best. One minute the dog is at your side and the next it is gone. You call but the dog does not return. Never the less it was a great improvement and one that is still used today in many parts of the world.

GPS technology has been around now for more than 15 years. Within the last 5 years the ability to track vehicles and people has become available to the general public. Small GPS tracking devices can be placed on just about anything including dogs. These units use cell phone technology to report the location, speed and direction of the GPS tracker. These small devices allow just about anyone to make a GPS dog Collar. GPS tracking service companies will then provide you with a real time map for the trackers location on your lap top computer or cell phone. The problem is that you do not want to be carrying a laptop with you while you walking or hunting your dog. However, many dogs now cost twice that and if you add in the cost of training you may find it more than cost effective. Can I use advantage flea control for cats on my dog?

I just found a flea on my 12 lb. dog. All I have is advantage for cats. Can I use this on my dog? I'm broke and can't go and buy some for my dog right now.

NO, only use it as the package states. if you put a dog dose on a cat the cat will start having seizures. If you put a cat dose on a dog it may not be enough of the medication and would be a waste of product/money. The dosages are different based on species first, then on weight. Which is whey there are sooo many different little boxes.

P.S. Bob is incorrect, the chemicals are the same, but the amounts are different...they are suspended in the liquid and the concentration is different in each tube.

Has anyone ever used the dog collars that claim to stop barking?

The great thing about this sort of collar is that training your dog can happen day or night and if you're out at work then the collar will continue working when your dog is at home. Whatever types of electric shock collar you buy it's important that you ensure that the setting levels aren't too high. The purpose of the collar is simply to make your dog uncomfortable; you don't actually want to inflict any real pain. Only use the minimum amount of shock that you can.

I haven't. I want to, but I'm afraid. I would never make it on Jack@$$. Have you been shocked by your dogs shock collar? Does it hurt? Could you describe the feeling? Would you do it again?

No, I don't put the collar on my neck.
I do however ALWAYS match the intensity of the collar with a dogs normal collar correction. This means putting both on my wrist and making sure that both feel the same. Without doing this one or the other would loose it's effectiveness .

The thing with an electric collar is that you can make it hurt IF that is your desire. But, that makes YOU, not the collar, the abuser doesn't it. Electric collars are adjustible for a reason.

Remote dog training collars are a double edged sword. One one hand they are evil torture devices for your dog. On the other hand, they can be quite useful for training purposes. The fine line between them being used for good and used for bad all falls on how you use it.

The only way I would use remote dog training collars is for "distance" training. For example, if I was training a hunting dog or a SAR (search and rescue) dog. I would anchor the shock to either "sit" or "freeze". That would mean the dog would either sit or freeze when they felt the shock. That way I wouldn't have to worry about the dog running off after a butterfly.

The bad thing that a lot of people use remote dog training collars for is punishment. This is quite a harsh form of punishment, too harsh for dogs. If someone keeps the remote dog training collar on a dog all day, every day, and shocks them for everything they do wrong, such as not sitting quick enough, the dog is going to go crazy. This is the time, and one reason why dogs start to go kinda stir crazy. They are being shocked over and over again. It is quite understandable, isn't it?

The remote dog training collar, if used, should only be used for a limited amount of time. It should only be used for training purposes. It should not be kept on all the time, the metal prongs will dig into the dogs neck and could cause an infection.

If you do decide to use the remote dog training collar please keep in mind a few simple rules. First, never use it as punishment. That will make your dog run away from it and try its hardest to not wear it. Second, only keep it on for a limited amount of time. Once training is done, take it off and treat and reward your dog for doing a good job. Lastly, try to find a different method of training. Depending on what you are training for, you might find a method that works better. Don't use a remote dog training collar for basic obedience, that is a little over kill.
