I started my doberman at about 10 or 11 months and use an e-collar because she chases after my horses. I went with the Dogtra 280NCP, it works pretty well. Have you used one of those anti-bark collars that uses the spray (I think it's citronella) rather than shock

to get your dog to stop barking? How well do they work? Is there anything cruel or unusual about this type of collar?

Yes. The Shelter I work for suggests these collars ( citronella ) for people having problems with barking dogs. They work very well. The strong odor affects the dogs because of their strong sense of smell. My friend , who is a vet, uses it on her Great dane. Its very rare he actually gets sprayed because it usually just takes one or two times, and the dog doesn't wanna bark with it on. Very effective product, I highly reccomend it

EDIT IG64... citronella does not have a lasting odor. Once sprayed the odor goes away very quickly, thats the reason they use citronella in the collar. The few hundred dogs that I have seen with these collars on react to the initial spray, then they are not bothered after that. And it does not spray on the face of the dog, it sprays a mist in front of the dog, its designed not to spray directly in the dogs face

A dog that barks all day and night can ruin your life and make war with your neighbors.

There is a huge range of training collars for dogs and a vociferous debate among owners and trainers as to whether these collars are humane and effective or whether they are cruel and counterproductive.

Different types of collar are used for different purposes. The two main uses are for distance control, when the dog is out of the trainer's immediate reach and is not on a leash and the second aim is to control excessive barking.

The distance training collar enables the trainer to administer a shock to the dog, by using a handheld transmitter which causes an electric pulse in the collar. This distracts the dog from whatever undesirable behavior it is currently doing and lets the trainer get his attention.

Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For instance, your dog won't come when you call him and pays you no attention, so you clicj the remote. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. There will be many people who claim that one of these collars has saved their dog' life. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

If you have the time, the patience and the knowledge, then by far the best solution is to train your dog to bark at appropriate times and to get him to "Speak and be "Quiet" on command. There are plenty of excellent training courses available at reasonable prices. More details in the links below.

However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.

Get it right and you'll have friendly neighbors, peaceful nights and a happy dog!

Dog Houses are a must for today's modern, hard-working dog lovers.

Is this a decent camera? Am I likely to have any problems with it? I am on a very tight budget and this is a huge buy for me. Am I being an unreasonable wife?? I need your opinions, please.?

I am 29 years old, I have 5 children ranging from 6 months to 8 years. I stay home with them every day. My husband works to support our family. I take care of all the household chores, with the exception of asking hubby to occasionally change a diaper, fill the dog water bowl or take out the kitchen trash. However we now have had a huge disagreement that is threatening to our marriage. I feel he should mow the lawn, where as he thinks I should add it to my chores, at least part of the time. I tried to explain that breastfeeding the baby, and caring for my other responsibilites makes that impossible for me, but he won't listen. Am I wrong to simply expect him to do this? I have also suggested that we hire someone. He won't have that either.What now??

I dont think thats unreasonable. Alot of people think stay at home mom = watch tv all day, when in reality you have a lot of cleaning to do, not to mention, taking care of 5 children. I think he's being unreasonable if he freaks out because you ask him to do ONE thing. If you went out and got a 9-5 job then your job would end at the end of your work day, much like your husbands...but since youre a stay at home mom, your job never ends.

I know a lot of stay at home moms who work way harder than their husbands, and their husbands act like they bust their butts and their wives do nothing, therefore anything that needs to be done around the house, is left up to their wives to do. Hopefully that isnt the kind of husband you have, but if it is then I'd just let the lawn go if I were you. It'd take him MAYBE 2 hours, not even once a week, to chip in and help. That isnt asking too much, at all.

They intentionally fed useful dogs, while killing wild dogs, establishing the relationships between humans and specific types of dogs over thousands of years.

That created the pedigree dog breeds which are well known today. It is important that al breeders breed selectively and choose their male and famail dogs for breeding carefully.

Studying pedigrees and visiting kennels is the best way to select the most compatible stud, and this can consume weeks or even months of a breeders time. And because the onset of a bitch\'s season can\'t be predetermined exactly, a short-notice trip to the stud will probably be necessary, making proper choice of mates very difficult. Stud owners and owners of the bitch certify the mating to the stud-book or the club. Stud-book and club cannot determine if the named stud has mated the named bitch, also not if the bitch of a breeder (knowingly or not) has been bred by several studs (also out of other breeds) in one season. A lot depends on trust amonst breeders in the dog breeders world.

Huge Range
how much does it cost to construct a golf driving range?

I am looking to build a single level 40-50 bay driving range. I don't need a huge clubhouse. I just want to know how much it costs to:
level the driving range,
build the hitting bay areas
build a small club house
set up a parking lot about 150 spaces
set up the lighting

I think to get a real answer you need to give a lot more details, but in the interest of answering as best I can:

The price of land is relatively low at the moment. But you need to pay for a location people would go to. Then you need to decide if you want to do a single, double or triple deck set-up (to maximize the space you've got). Only the bottom floor would be real grass, unless you purchase saud once a month (it's expensive). The answer to that question would add costs to your construction. (decks estimate: 1K for 0, 10K for 2, 20K for 3)

While the decks (if you want them) are being built you can get a Bulldozer on loan for a few hundred a day and level out 400 by 100-200 yards I'd say in a few days (depending entirely on how level the ground already is). This could add as much as 5K to your plan if you buy a place that has lots of rocks or is significantly sloped. You'll also need other construction equipment if you ahve large rocks you want removed. (leveling the land: 10K - which includes union worker's time, without rocks and up to around 30K if there are significant rocks and work to be done).

The Lighting will need to be put in at the same time with some of the same construction vehicles so I'd guess you'd put in lighting every 50-100 feet enabling driving to happen during non-daylight hours. You also have to ask if there will be enough interest to do this during non-daylight times (will the cost of keeping it open be paid by the night-golfers?) (my estimate: 10K)

The "small" clubhouse could be as much as a 100K job, depending on what you want, lighting, electricity, water, plumbing, etc)

The parking lot will be expensive at around 50K for the price of the land mixed with the cost of materials, then you'd have to add around another 10K to pay for peopel that know how to lay that much cement, paint the lines and light the parking lot (60-70K).

This is a huge project and I'm not sure if you've thought it out fully. I estimate that the least you could possibly get away with paying for all of these things woudl be somewhere near 200-300K with all of the little things that you'll need to pay for that I didn't menion (everything from buckets to machines to distribute balls, to furniture in the range, in the clubhouse, etc).

What is the best brand of bark collar to stop my dog from barking? Are there other methods that work better?

My dog is driving me insane. I've heard that collars that increase the intensity with the number of barks don't work well because they just teach the dogs to bark only two or three times. I want to stop it completely!

i had bought one once in a fit of anger because of the barking. but after checking it out , i just couldn't do it. i brought it back an the lady actually said thank you. now years later, after some hard times' we're best friends an i have a clean conscious.

Shock Collars for Dogs: Humane or Cruel?

There is a huge range of training collars for dogs and a vociferous debate among owners and trainers as to whether these collars are humane and effective or whether they are cruel and counterproductive.

Different types of collar are used for different purposes. The two main uses are for distance control, when the dog is out of the trainer's immediate reach and is not on a leash and the second aim is to control excessive barking.

The distance training collar enables the trainer to administer a shock to the dog, by using a handheld transmitter which causes an electric pulse in the collar. This distracts the dog from whatever undesirable behavior it is currently doing and lets the trainer get his attention.

Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For example, you call the dog to come to you, he ignores you, so you zap him. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. For the defence, there are many loving dog owners who say that these collars are a valuable last resort, which enables them to control a dog which would otherwise have to be put down. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

If you have the time, the patience and the knowledge, then by far the best solution is to train your dog to bark at appropriate times and to get him to "Speak and be "Quiet" on command. However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.

What kind of dog breed would you suggest that stays very small. We have a house with allot of vases and decoration and leather couches. My friend has a Tabby cat and he is no trouble at all and he does not go onto beds or couches he has his own little space with a rocking chair he loves to sleep on. I still want a dog but not let the dog make the whole house as its own house. If you what i mean? That is why i like a small dog that stays very small so it wont distruct the house. Im really not sure. Please Help.
One of my other freinds has a dog and he is medium sized and their house is really dirty i couldnt even stay in there nor live. Im guessing they dont clean their house or the dog is really a handful. Tough to say. I've seen little dogs do incredible amounts of damage and I have two large dogs that haven't damaged anything in the house.

My friend's miniature dachshund chewed the living daylights out their new expensive kitchen cabinetry. He has scratched furniture and done a lot of damage. Little dogs are lap dogs and expect to get on furniture. They think it is their right.

I have two big goldens and all I contend with is hair. They chew their own toys, sleep on their own beds are trained to stay off the furniture and out of the kitchen. It was our cat that caused a scratch on some cabinetry that he shouldn't have been on.

If you get a little or a big dog, training is critical. I recommend crate training when you can't supervise for both housebreaking and to prevent damage.

The friend with a medium sized dog and a dirty house is just a bad housekeeper. As I said, I spend a fair amount of time picking up dog hair. My house is clean and does not smell like dog. My dogs are bathed and groomed regularly and I clean regularly. I'm a fuss and couldn't stand a dirty house. So it's the friend, not the dog.

I suggest a non-shedding breed for you if hair is a concern. you will need to get the dog groomed every 4-6 weeks, but hair in the house won't be a problem. Check out shih tzus, and poodles. Skip bichons - they are notoriously hard to housebreak and keeping the house clean seems to be a big deal for you. And as I said before, do crate training to avoid destruction.

To have pets you have to accept that accidents happen, shedding happens, stuff happens. I need to have a clean house but don't freak out over the little things. I just get out the vacuum or whatever. The joy of having the pet outweighs the inconveniences.
