i need help with my new cattle dog puppy?

hi i'm claire and our family just got a new cattle dog pup he is 7 to 8 weeks old and he is teething when we play with him he gnores our hands (not badly) and bites our clothes should i discourage this?

Hi Claire -

Absoutely do NOT let him bite you! He is actually probably more like 6 weeks old, because his mother & his litter-mates would start teaching him about bite-inhibition when he's 7-8 weeks old....and that's why you should NEVER EVER take a puppy away from its mom/litter before it's 8 weeks old.

So, now, you and your family have to play the part of "momma-dog" and teach him bite inhibition.

First, make sure you have some dog toys (either soft plushy toys, or rubber bones, or whatever, doesn't matter). Your puppy MUST have some puppy-appropriate chew-bones to teethe on. Your puppy needs to chew, so you have to give him something safe to chew on. Go to PetSmart or PETCO and ask for help in finding the best toys for a teething puppy.

Second, NEVER EVER let him bite you or your clothes. That is simply not allowed. If he tries, make a squealing "hurt" sound like a hurt puppy would, and stop playing with him. If he continues to try to bite, make that squeal sound again, and walk away and ignore him. Repeat this, again and again, until he gets the message that it is NOT OKAY to bite your skin or clothes.

This is very important.

This is what his mom & his siblings would've done if he'd been left with them long enough to learn.

If you don't do this now, you will only encourage more biting, as he gets his adult teeth, and you will have set a pattern that you are not his leaders.

Also, ACDs (Australian Cattle Dogs) are terrific dogs, but only if they have enough work to keep their minds occupied. I hope you are planning to take him to Puppy Obedience classes, and then maybe to Agility or, best of all, Herding classes?

Dog Clicker
I just started clicker training. How do I know if my dog knows what the click means?

I don't know of any way to tell if my 6 year old pug Dudley knows what the click of the clicker means. Is there any way to tell? Also, I'd like some tips to help me get started with clicker training.

You will know that he clicker is "charged" when you click and your dog turns around and looks at you or perks his ears and shows interest.

It can take a couple of days to "charge" the clicker. As said beore - get a bag of treats, and simply click and treat - several times a day.

The treats should be very small as he is a small dog and you don't want him to fill up on treats. You can also use his dinnertime for charging the clicker. Hold the bowl and give him a kibble after each click.

The best way to learn the method is to go to a class. They can help you with the right methods and timing. The treat must come within a couple of seconds after the click.

My dog hates her crate!?

Whenever I put my seven weeks old dog in her portable kennel she starts going into a frenzy. She wants to get out, she's crying, she's screaming and she's panting like crazy! I just dont knwo what to do. She still isnt potty trained and somebody told me to put her in a crate. I got this kennel and I'm trying to keep her inside so she'd learn to go in or sleep in or anything! She peed in this kennel one time, I wiped away the pee and she never went inside again. She hates it! What do I do!?
She normally sleeps on the floor in my room and she has all the house for herself in the day time. I fI go out I usually lock he rin my room where her water and food bowl is in.

Get her inside, using treats. Then, lock the door. Go away for 2 minutes, and ignore her. Then, while the door's still locked, giver her a treat. Go away for another minute, then let her out and play with her. Increase the time spent in the crate by 1 minute per day, and do it every day. Soon, she should go inside without treats.

Another idea is to be aware of your puppy's schedule. If they like to wake up and play, try to be available to play with them at that time. Working an active pup up in this way can stimulate their appetite and thirst. After they visit the water or food dish, take them outside to allow them to use the bathroom. Stay with them. This will give you the chance to give them loads of praise when they do go.

Use single word commands. Don't use potty one time, then bathroom the next then something else the next. Use consistency in your commands so your poodle knows what you're talking about.

A crate is NOT simply a cage for storing your pet. Crate Training is however about confinement and control. Your poodle has no right to live in your home especially if they're not potty trained. Your puppy should not be free to roam and have accidents in your home but should remain in their crate unless you're keeping a close watch on them. This means not only during the day but also at night.

Training Underpads Pads
Washable Puppy Pads, any Pros?

Recently came across the MedNet Washable Puppy Pads (http://www.mednetdirect.com/Sofnit-Washable-Underpads-p/msc013000-p.htm) which sell for $130/24pk. I'm not an advocate for the use of these pads unless they are gradually phased out (used only during the 4-5 weeks of training) or for sick, immobile or elderly dogs, but was wondering what were the Pros of such a thing. It doesn't seem feasible to spend $130 on simply reusable diapers.

I used washable pee pads for my puppies when they were still very young. It is MUCH better than using those disposable ones because 1st of all, puppies LOVE tearing them up. My puppies kept on doing that because anything that is paper-ish is fascinating to them & they kept on shredding them non-stop & swallowing some of the pieces too so that's why I changed it to the washable type.

Secondly, they can absorb a lot of urine not like the disposable ones because they're so thin especially the lower quality ones but the urine & poop on the washable ones can be washed off very easily under a running tap but yes, they were expenssive BUT buying loads of the disposable ones can cost just as much or maybe even more & they're frustrating to use because like I said, the puppies will always want to shred them up. It's fun to them! Might as well just use newspapers then...

But if you still want to use disposable pee pads, I suggest you get the ones made for old and/or handicapped people from supermarkets. They're bigger & cost less than the ones made for pets.

When you begin house breaking your golden retriever, you should follow a strict routine. Before your pet is properly trained, it's very important that your gold retriever does not spend too much time outside of it's crate. If your pet is roaming around your home, you should watch it carefully. Don't be upset at your pet if it relieves itself in an unwanted area. Your pet is your responsibility!

Training your golden retriever in your home is almost like training a child. In the morning, show your dog where to go. Designate that one location for relieving him or herself. Once your pet does, praise it. Let your pet know that it has urinated or pooped in the correct place.

While your in this training process, you don't want your pet to roam wherever it wants. Neither do you want to let it outside of it's crate when it wants. When an accident happens too much, it could become a habit. Pet's don't learn from their mistakes too easily. Even though your pet might not fee too comfortable going through this process, it's important that you train your pet right so the good actions become good habits.

If you give him too much freedom, your golden retriever could relieve itself on the floor. This might seem like a small thing. You could always clean up the mess and expect it to not happen so easily again. However, this is a major mistake. After you clean up the urine, you might not think that there's anything there. However, there's a good chance that your dog could smell it. This could trigger the action of peeing. So when he smell that area, your dog may identify this as the normal area to relieve itself. Having your dog relieve itself in the right location is very important.

If possible, it would be a good idea to allow your dog a passage, such as a dog door, to go outside. If you're training your golden retriever to relieve itself outside, you should use a litter box or a wee-wee pad at the designated location. If you don't have a outside passage, having wee-wee pads (also known as underpads) will be sufficient in an indoor environment. These can allow your dog to easily identify where it should go incase it has to go.

The process of house breaking your golden retriever could be time consuming, as well as frustrating. It's important that you praise your dog and follow a strict regiment. Treat him like he's a part of the family. Once your dog is properly trained, things will be much easier. So make sure your pet is properly trained!

Reversible Pet Bed
I'm scared of my Gerbil, I think I made him not like me!?

I had a lab rat named Godzilla for this past semester of school, and she was the sweetest, most affectionate animal. Not ONCE did she bite me, not even when I was first getting to know her. I couldn't take her home with me because I was in school in VA and live in FL so I wanted to buy a gerbil. I knew from the start from what people had told me that they bite more. This gerbil though lunges at me and bares it's teeth whenever I go near the cage! Unfortunately, where it came from was a store where anyone can just reach their hand in and pet them. Is this reversible? How can I get him to like me? I am absolutely terrified of getting bitten, I've even used gloves when I've had to move him (I've only had him 2 days now). Also I know I could hold him by the scruff of the neck but I'm worried he'll whip his head around so fast I'll be bitten!! help! I really do want to get along with him. He is still very young, about 3 inches in a 10 gallon fish tank with lots of toys and bedding

The young ones are a lot more daring and they are testing what they know. It takes time for the bond to develope and for him to trust you. It will happen in time. keep hand feeding him, dont move your hand till he takes the food off of it. try not to startle him as then it will take longer for him to come get the food.

also It could be that you got a Gerbil with a bit of a temperment. No worries he is young and will still learn that you mean no harm eventually, they take longer but it will happen. When I had my first set of gerbils, i was taught to pick them up another way. If you are uncomfortable with wearing gloves, you can also pick him up by grasping the BASE of the tail closest to its body, That way it is impossible for the little guy to bite you. And no It doesnt hurt him either.
What color gerbil/gerbils do you have. I was partial to canadian white spots. They were a solid color, but with a white spot in the shape of a diamond on their forehead. oh I miss them

When you bring home a new puppy, petting and playing with him is the easy part. What may not be so straightforward is the need to enforce the rules of the household right away, and that includes teaching him where to eliminate. A puppy will learn new behaviors more quickly when he is consistently sent the same message from his leader (that’s you!). Where he is supposed to eliminate should be an unvarying lesson your puppy is taught from the moment he arrives at his new home. Many dog owners teach young puppies to eliminate on puppy pads to make housebreaking easier.

A supply of puppy pads should be on hand before the puppy is brought home. When you arrive home with your new puppy, have the puppy pads already situated in the area(s) where you want the puppy to eliminate. Take him directly to the pad, sit him on it and praise him. This will ensure that he knows where the pad is located, allow him to pick up its scent and help give him a positive association with the pad.

The first step to housebreaking with puppy pads is teaching your pup what you want him to do there, and the second is helping him understand to do so every time. To teach a puppy that a puppy pad is for eliminating, use positive reinforcement. Learn to watch for signs that the puppy needs to use the bathroom, such as sniffing or turning around. Carry him to the pad when he is exhibiting these behaviors, as well as first thing in the morning and after he eats or drinks water. In the early stages, the puppy should be placed on the pad frequently. The first time he eliminates on the pad, and each time thereafter, praise him like he just did the greatest thing in the world.

Even with the convenience of using puppy pads to help train your pup, accidents will happen. The manner in which you deal with accidents can help or hurt your house training efforts. When the puppy has an accident, say “no” firmly, during the act, and carry him to the puppy pad. Praise him while he is on the puppy pad so that you do not give him a negative association that could make him avoid the pad. Send a consistent message every time, and he will soon learn that eliminating on the puppy pad is the desirable behavior, encouraging him to repeat that behavior.

One of the challenges of housebreaking a puppy is that once he urinates in the wrong spot, the scent of the urine in that area will drive him to want to go there again. When that spot is on your sofa, bed or carpet, housebreaking can become more frustrating and costly. However, if he is taught to use a puppy pad from day one, housebreaking becomes easier. This is not to say there will be no accidents, but the sooner he is taught what to do, the sooner he will stop eliminating in undesirable areas.

A common mistake new puppy owners make is allowing the pup to do as he pleases because he is so young, innocent and, let’s face it, irresistibly cute. Enforcing rules on such an adorable puppy may not feel like the most natural thing to do for us humans, but it is critical for the puppy to learn what is expected of him. Attempting to reverse bad habits is more difficult than creating good ones to begin with, which is why house training should begin from the moment you arrive home with your new best friend.

Well, this is actually a different situation than most may have. This dog, we've just rescued from being put down at a kill shelter, has apparently been spoiled like crazy, even though it ahd never been indoors and had never had a bath in 6 years. Still, it must have gotten lots of attention or something because everyone will be sleeping at night and all of a sudden the basset hound will start barking at 4 in the morning or 5 in the morning wanting attention. It doesn't know when to stop. It'll do it for hours. Everyone has said to ignore it and that giving in is the WORST thing to do because it'll think that by barking it will get it's way. So someone insisted a no bark collar.

Sure, doesn't mean it's any good. There are alternatives. ANYBODY can slap 'PRO' in front of their name. Remember, you don't NEED schooling to become a dog trainer.

Training a dog is as important as feeding it. The fact that having a pet is a responsibility cannot be overemphasized. The owner must establish a good relationship with her dog. And the best way to establish this desired good relationship is to conduct dog training. Training a dog must become a regular activity. And in order to get the best out of dog training, the owner, who is also the dog trainer, must know the basics of different kinds of training.

Kinds of Dog Training Methods

The methods of training dogs are based on the way the trainer reinforces the pet's behavior. The reinforcement can be positive and this is done by giving rewards. The reinforcement can be negative and this is accomplished by giving corrections. Or the reinforcement can be neither positive nor negative and this is carried out by using a neutral sound, such as a click. The trainer can use all three kinds of reinforcement in various situations.

Rewards

The goal of positive reinforcement is to encourage the repetition of a certain behavior. For example, when the dog trainer gives the command "sit," and the dog actually sits, the trainer can immediately give the reward. There are many forms of rewards. The most common form is the dog treat. But in the absence of a dog treat, the trainer can use other forms such as verbal praise, an affectionate rub, and the dog toy.

Corrections

The goal of negative reinforcement is to make the pet discontinue a specific behavior. For example, when the dog is given the command to sit and he does not sit or even barks, the trainer can correct the behavior by physically holding the dog and making it sit, while verbally repeating the command. The theory is that the dog will associate the command with the position that it is being forced into. Similar to rewards, corrections may also come in different forms. It can be a verbal "No!" that will signal the dog that its owner is not pleased. Or the correction can be very physical such as the use of electric shock collars. For example, if the dog is not allowed to enter a specific room, the collar will send an electric shock if the dog crosses the threshold towards this room. Some dog trainers, however, do not approve of electric shock collars. They believe that the best dog training methods need not involve anything that will give pain.

Clicks

A click is a neutral sound. But the variations of it can be used to make the pet understand that a certain behavior is desirable and another behavior is not welcome. The major advantage of the use of clicks in dog training is that the dog trainer need not physically hold the dog. This kind of reinforcement is the preferred method of many professional dog trainers. These trainers claim that clicking is efficient and flexible.

Once the dog owner is familiar with the different methods of training dogs, the next step is to decide which kind of dog training will be carried out first. Some of the popular kinds of dog training are dog agility training, dog potty training, dog house training, and dog obedience training. These can be carried out one by one or simultaneously.

How long to put up with his dog that bites me?

I know that I have written about this before, but I am totally at a road block. I love my boyfriend and we talk often about a future together. His dog has aggression issues and aggresively bites me when ever he feels like it. So far, in the past 5 months, he has bitten me 5 times, the last time being yesterday when he was sitting on my lap.
My BF has had a trainer over and we have been training him since January but this still continues. The trainer emailed me saying that this dog is the type that will bite when given the opprotunity. I dont want to live in a house with a biting dog for myself, my cat and my future children.
I dont know what to do as I feel like my only choice is to leave the relationship or live with this disrespectful dog. My boyfriend says he will not get rid of the dog.
What other choices do I have? What would you do?

Get rid of your piece of crap boyfriend. Yup, you get to move out. I usually get a lot of thumbs down when I say this, but the reason a guy shacks up with a girl and doesn't marry her first is because he doesn't respect her.

Edit: Even if he DOES get rid of the dog, he let the dog bite you 5 times now. He should have done something about it when it first happened.

Edit again: You are at least the second girlfriend he's shacked with an didn't bother marrying first. Do you see a pattern here? He uses women who volunteer to be his free sex slave.

Does your dog engage in seemingly sweet, subtle, manipulative behavior such as nudging you for affection, forcing a ball in your lap, mouthing your hand, or pawing you when you sit on the couch? Or does he display more of an insistent, aggression dog dominance when commanding your attention?

In either event, you have a dog dominance behavior problem. Your dog seeks to control and manipulate you, and it will not become so cute over time. These dog behaviors can lead to demands that drive friends away, prevent your children from hearing the serious message you are trying to tell them, make someone trip and fall, lead to nipping or biting, and more. It is neither pleasant nor safe.

So then, how do you make Fido stop? What can you do to assert your authority and gain your leadership position over this dog dominance behavior?

First, always make your dog sit or lie down, a submissive posture, for a treat, food, or prior to going out for a walk. Make the dog wait until he is calm for ANYTHING Â… You will soon thank yourself!

Your dog should ALWAYS walk beside or behind you when on his daily outing, never in the lead. Remember the Leader-Follower Rule. Note how calm a dog is when following an owner, and how on edge he is when he is in front in the control position.

To gain your dog's full respect, your comportment and attitude must command that respect. One aid to help you exude authority in a manner the dog actually senses and smells, is your intensely positive FOCUS. Stand tall and concentrate on something that makes you feel very proud.

I think about a very unruly dog I once trained on and off leash, and the look on the owner's face when he arrived some weeks later. As he came through the wide opened doorway, upon seeing the previously wild dog seated calmly behind my friend, he exclaimed: "This cannot be the same dog!" That makes me smile, fill my lungs, and thrust my head up and shoulders square with powerful inner assurance!

Another dog training tip: If your dog is lying down in your path but not sound asleep, do NOT step over him or go around him. Instead, nudge him gently with your foot, tell him to move, or get his attention some other appropriate fashion. He has to move for you, NOT you for him! He will soon understand this without your having to do anything. Then, like my Border Collie, he will just get up and move out of the way when he senses you need to pass. Otherwise, he begins to feel in control and may also become a safety hazard, rising unexpectedly as you step over and causing you to fall.

As much fun as you may have with it, roughhousing and growly games with your dog are certainly not recommended -- especially not with young ones who have not yet learned proper relationship boundaries and protocols. Note that even older dogs can gravitate from play to serious control actions, too. I have received and seen too many accidental bites and worked with too many unbalanced dogs as a result of this! I even have a friend whose three-year-old Dalmatian had to be put down after a pattern of roughhousing with her little brother. It reached the point that the dog carried the rough control into the house, not playing any longer -- ultimately biting the child and drawing blood more than once! Let dogs roughhouse with each other.

Even games like tug-a-war between you and your dog are not good. Let dogs play it with each other, instead. Yes, that colorful rope you bought just begs you to take one end for your dog's delight. I watch my two dogs as they play this game ... and the victor gains power! It boosts his self-confidence. If you win, you lessen him in his eyes, and if you give in or simply lose hold of the rope, in his mind he has just gained power over you!

No, your dog needs to be secure and confident IN YOU and not feel competitive with you. This way, it is a win-win situation for you and your dog, and YOU can be the TOP DOG – the confident leader of the pack!

Wee Pads

How do I get m y 6month old Shitzu to Poop outside, He currently uses the wee pads for peeing only?

If he's currently using the wee wee pads only for peeing and not pooping outside, that must mean he is pooping inside and not on the wee wee pads- is that right? Sounds like you need to get onto a serious house training program ASAP!!!

You will need to supervise your puppy the entire time he is in the house. When you can't supervise him he should either be in a crate or in a small area with a wee wee pad and nowhere else to potty. I really like the second option bc it lets me leave my puppy for quite a while without having to worry that he is at home crossing his legs. Here is an article to read about that:

You should make sure to prevent and/or catch every single accident in the house, and also every good deed on the wee wee pads (when you are home). If he makes a mistake, scold him and pick him up quickly and put him down on the pads. If he finishes up there, praise him! Always praise him when you see him pottying on the pads.

Here are 5 ways to make your bedroom more spacious.

1. Paint your room in pale colors.

Light colors recede. A white ceiling looks higher. Paint the walls white, cream, ivory or very pale pinks, or other very light colors and the walls look further away. If you paint the entire room a very pale color, the room would look and feel bigger than it really is.

2. Declutter

Tidy your bedroom. Get rid of anything you do not use. Clear the top of your dresser and keep everything in the drawer. Shelves should be decorative. Put minimal items and leave lots of empty space for the illusion of spaciousness. Clear all surfaces of clutter and hide whatever you can behind the cupboard door, in the drawer, or just get them out of sight. Clean surfaces, a large clear space, makes the room look much spacious.

3. Use mirrors.

Mirrors are not only for vanity reasons. Mirrors reflect light. Light makes anything look and feel more spacious. On top of that,a wall lined with mirrors makes the room look twice as big since the reflection of the room in the mirror looks like another room.

4. Create Space.

Is there empty, unused space under the window? Put a shoe rack there, or a low shelf to keep things. Is your room odd shaped with nooks and corners still unused? Use those spaces for storage and hide the clutter behind curtains.

5. Choose your bed wisely.

Crate Cover

puppy will only be quiet when crated?

13 week old puppy is only quiet when in his crate and covered with a blanket. When I leave I'd like to allow him free in the kitchen (puppy proofed) but he won't shut up there, unless crated.

I understand your desire to give your pup a larger area to play while you are gone BUT maybe the area is too large for him right now. Try a smaller area, put the crate in there for a bed, a couple of blankies on the floor, a couple of stuffed animals to cuddle up too.
If it needs to be the kitchen, try working in there and go in and out with the pup contained in. Make your out times longer. And see if the pup gets more acclimated
So you have all the essentials - food, water, bed, toys, blankies and cuddles...
You have puppy proofed and you will find more.
Give multiple times for potty breaks and give them a place in the kitchen for - just in case.
I have one that has the run of the house and she still goes and gets into her crate when I leave.

Kennel training puppy is thought by many owners to be unfair, mean, cruel. The terms "kennel training puppy" and "crate training a puppy" are synonymous and simply mean teaching and conditioning a puppy to sleep or wait safely and securely in a crate, as in a den. The truth is that puppy crate training can help both puppy and owner. It is a great solution for dog separation anxiety, assists with potty training for puppy dogs, and certainly helps avoid damage during the puppy chewing phase.

In the wild, dogs and wolves live in personally dug dens more often than in caves. The area has space for the pack members to enter and for each individual to have an assigned spot to sleep. There is little room, but the animals are secure and unafraid. It is their place of refuge and rest!

One of the things that makes crate training a puppy harder is that dogs naturally sleep together, not alone. Separation from the litter is, therefore, difficult for a puppy. Then when you, her new pack leader, leave her alone for long or for short, that can cause further feelings of separation anxiety. A place of security is one key in solving this.

I was well aware of such problems before I purchased my eight week old Labrador Retriever puppy. I determined before I brought her home that puppy crate training would be necessary until I could trust her alone in the house. So I purchased a dog crate and simple fleece blanket-liner.

When I first brought my pup inside, I only allowed her to smell the areas of the house in which she would initially be kept. Until she had clearly completed her puppy potty training, she was not going to be loose in the house. She certainly would not be unsupervised until she was past the puppy chewing phase, either.

I placed three of the puppy's favorite toys in the kennel. Two or three toys is the right number for comfort and to reduce boredom, but more than that causes confusion and add to the anxiety. At the front of the cage I placed a sturdy bowl of fresh water.

I covered the top, back, and three sides of the dog kennel with a folded, light-weight, cotton bedspread to make it snuggly and secure-feeling, like a den. Her "safe place." (As a side benefit, that also made it more attractive for the house.) You can use any sheet, beach towel, fabric, or buy a kennel cover. There are some impressive crate accessories, covers, and liners on the market, including some insulated ones for colder climates.

I placed my little Lab in her puppy crate the first night. For three days, she cried when left alone there. After that, though, she only woke me up when she had a need to go wee or potty. Then I whisked her out promptly and placed her on the grass to do her business. That made puppy house training a cinch, and we only had two or three accidents in the house – ever!

The manner in which you do things is as critical as the act itself. I was very careful to put my puppy into the cage nonchalantly – not with hugs and kisses. The more precise you are, the easier it is to get what you want from a dog.

The most important thing to remember is not to let your puppy out of the dog crate when she is crying (unless, of course, she has a real need to go). She must have boundaries from the start. Boundaries give her security, and boundaries give you necessary respect and control as Owner and Master, her "Pack Leader."

Crate training a puppy may be a little bumpy at the start, but it sure is a great help – with reducing dog separation anxiety, puppy chewing, puppy potty training, protecting your house, and so much more! So give your cuddly little one the comfort and security she wants and needs. Give her a "safe den" of her own. She will learn to love it and run to it as though to proclaim: "It's MY den!"

House training a one year old dog without a crate!?

I have tried everything with my dog. I take him out all the time, sometimes for hours at a time. I have read books and everything. When I take him out he goes sometimes, but usually as soon as we get back inside he goes inside toO! I praise him for going outside when he does and he gets a treat. He gets plenty of attention so I dont think he does it for attention. I tried crate training him but instead of waiting he would go in his cage. Then, he would lick it up or eat it and usually rolled in it. Now he is a year old and still goes in the house and I dont know what else to do!!!

I'm curently training a puppy using a crate and a pee pad method. Start with the bigger pads....they are scented and somehow make dogs know to naturally go on them. Continue with the big pads until your dogs goes on them and then start buying a smaller size.....once the dog is ok with that size buy a smaller size......
I think the smallest ones are a 2'x2' square....once you dog is good with that one slowely move it towards the door......a little more each day...
leave it right by the door for several days and then remove it completely, or put it outside where you want your dog to go.

The idea of having a pet bunny is truly exiting but before approaching your pet shop, you should have a fair idea about its accommodation and habitation needs. Rabbits do not gel with domestic environments as easily as other pets. They feel more comfortable in natural habitats adorned with natural vegetation and plant life. Nevertheless, you wouldn't want to keep a rabbit which is not happy with its surroundings. So, the best you can do is to nurture an artificial habitat that resembles like a natural one. This would keep your rabbit more happy and healthy and it will certainly live longer.

Probably your rabbit would spend most of its time in its cage. Therefore, your focus should be on making your rabbit cage as friendly as possible. The size of the rabbit cage should be no less than 24 x 30 x 16 inches. If your rabbit weighs more than 5 pounds then your cage size should be increased further. These are the minimum limits. You can provide your rabbit with larger cages or dens if you want it to enjoy a bigger habitat. You can change the spacing limits according to the facilities available at your place.

Proper location for a rabbit cage is a very important factor but it is usually ignored by most of the people. They try to fit the cage anywhere they deem right or feel comfortable. They often forget that more than their arrangement needs they should think about their pet's necessity. Hence, if you are keeping a rabbit always make sure that your house, backyard or lawn has enough space and ventilation to neatly accommodate a big rabbit cage. Never place your rabbit cage in a cramped room. Also, ensure that the room is copiously ventilated. Adequate sunlight and air is essential for proper development of your rabbit. However, rabbits love cool climates, hence avoid places where direct sunlight falls over the cage. If the cage is made of metal wires, this would result in more heating. In any case, the temperature within the cage should not be beyond 75 degree Fahrenheit. Also, too low temperatures should be avoided. During winters if the temperatures at your place fall below 45 degree Fahrenheit, then make sure that your rabbit cage is relocated to a well insulated room.

Inside the cage you should make necessary arrangements to provide proper natural cushioning for your rabbit. Use clean and fresh straw to cover the floor of the cage. Alternatively, you can use good quality hay. You should replace this hay or straw once in a week to keep away insects and pests. Cleanliness is yet another important aspect that goes a long way in keeping your pet happy and healthy. Rabbits need not require bathing unless it is soaked with dust or dirt. However, you should clean its cage everyday. Not just the cage, you should daily clean and wash all the vessels and bowls used for feeding your rabbit. Also, care should be taken to avoid the cage getting contaminated with left over or decaying eatables.
