Do you think some of the pet owners on the board go a little over board?

I notice the pet responses are overwhelmingly critical. One lady was asking what adult breed she should adopt (from a shelter) and she mentioned that 5 days a week she was out or 9 hours and almost everyone told her not to get a dog. Well.. does that mean any single person with a full time job shouldn't get a pet? And, even if we're not working aren't we all gone for gaps through out the day? Surely adoption and crate training is better than death.. or even adopting a house broken dog?

Has anyone else found the pet answers to be less than reasonable or helpfull?
rather hold it than be put to sleep. Honestly, they didn't even ask her if it was an indoor dog. But, a dog can re raised to be healthy on your schedule. Also there are breed of dogs you can litter train. There are doggy daycare services. There are so many options other than telling the woman that she shouldn't adopt an ADULT dog from a kill shelter.

I mean isn't that a little.. well contridicting?

I think people here can be slightly judgemental about peoples pet care abilities. I think though lots of those people base their comments on a "perfect world" scenario. There is still a lot of useful information here, you just have to be a bit thick skinned about some of the responses.

Please consider the following reasons why most any pet owner, especially a dog owner should seriously consider making a dog crate part of the household. These are not listed in order of importance. You must decide which benefit is most important to you.

- A place of their own when visitors are present in the home—at this writing the holiday season is quickly approaching which means house guests. Many pets get nervous when company comes. Many owners get nervous for their pets when company visits. Many times the pets end up locked in another room or outside. A dog crate provides your pet with a safe place of their own to retreat into while visitors are present.

- Food and holidays go hand in hand. You know what you want your dog to eat and what foods are restricted. Your visitors will not know what your pet feeding rules are. If your pet is safely in their crate then no unwanted food will be given to your pet that could make them seriously ill or worse. If you have experienced that severe situation then you know what I am referring to.

-Vacation time—How great would it be to have your pet riding with you in the car, in his dog crate, safe, secure, resting out of harms way and just enjoying life as you enjoy the open road.

- Many people love camping and of course we always take our dogs along. Dog crates allow you to relax in the knowledge that your pet or pets are safe and secure in their dog crates when you are not exercising them or engaging is some other interaction directly with them. Your dogs know this crate to be their sleeping area, the same one they had at home, so they are comfortable in it. They will not wonder away. They will not get lost. You know exactly where they are.

- If you show your dogs you probably already know how great it is to have your dog resting in his or her dog crate while you are watching the show or talking to other exhibitors, a great example for the rest of us.

- If you have an older pet they want and require a place to rest that is safe and secure. If you have younger pets in the home this is often a problem for the older dog. Enter the dog crate, their own space, their bed, their safe place to rest away from the others that may want to jump and play instead of rest.

- Now I will say just a bit about puppies and dog crates. There is tons of information available on crate training your puppy so we will not go into that here except to say that crate training your puppy will change your life and theirs for the better.

- Unfortunately our pets occasionally require surgery for some reason. How great would it be to have a place where your crate trained dog could rest in safety while recuperating? That is just another very important use for your dog crate.

Pet crates and pet carriers are not punishment for your pet. Once you have successfully crate trained your pet they will enjoy their crate for the rest of their lives. Never use the crate for punishment. This is counter productive to your goals.

House training a one year old dog without a crate!?

I have tried everything with my dog. I take him out all the time, sometimes for hours at a time. I have read books and everything. When I take him out he goes sometimes, but usually as soon as we get back inside he goes inside toO! I praise him for going outside when he does and he gets a treat. He gets plenty of attention so I dont think he does it for attention. I tried crate training him but instead of waiting he would go in his cage. Then, he would lick it up or eat it and usually rolled in it. Now he is a year old and still goes in the house and I dont know what else to do!!!

I'm curently training a puppy using a crate and a pee pad method. Start with the bigger pads....they are scented and somehow make dogs know to naturally go on them. Continue with the big pads until your dogs goes on them and then start buying a smaller size.....once the dog is ok with that size buy a smaller size......
I think the smallest ones are a 2'x2' square....once you dog is good with that one slowely move it towards the door......a little more each day...
leave it right by the door for several days and then remove it completely, or put it outside where you want your dog to go.
I've hear that this works very well.

The idea of having a pet bunny is truly exiting but before approaching your pet shop, you should have a fair idea about its accommodation and habitation needs. Rabbits do not gel with domestic environments as easily as other pets. They feel more comfortable in natural habitats adorned with natural vegetation and plant life. Nevertheless, you wouldn't want to keep a rabbit which is not happy with its surroundings. So, the best you can do is to nurture an artificial habitat that resembles like a natural one. This would keep your rabbit more happy and healthy and it will certainly live longer.

Probably your rabbit would spend most of its time in its cage. Therefore, your focus should be on making your rabbit cage as friendly as possible. The size of the rabbit cage should be no less than 24 x 30 x 16 inches. If your rabbit weighs more than 5 pounds then your cage size should be increased further. These are the minimum limits. You can provide your rabbit with larger cages or dens if you want it to enjoy a bigger habitat. You can change the spacing limits according to the facilities available at your place.

Proper location for a rabbit cage is a very important factor but it is usually ignored by most of the people. They try to fit the cage anywhere they deem right or feel comfortable. They often forget that more than their arrangement needs they should think about their pet's necessity. Hence, if you are keeping a rabbit always make sure that your house, backyard or lawn has enough space and ventilation to neatly accommodate a big rabbit cage. Never place your rabbit cage in a cramped room. Also, ensure that the room is copiously ventilated. Adequate sunlight and air is essential for proper development of your rabbit. However, rabbits love cool climates, hence avoid places where direct sunlight falls over the cage. If the cage is made of metal wires, this would result in more heating. In any case, the temperature within the cage should not be beyond 75 degree Fahrenheit. Also, too low temperatures should be avoided. During winters if the temperatures at your place fall below 45 degree Fahrenheit, then make sure that your rabbit cage is relocated to a well insulated room.

Inside the cage you should make necessary arrangements to provide proper natural cushioning for your rabbit. Use clean and fresh straw to cover the floor of the cage. Alternatively, you can use good quality hay. You should replace this hay or straw once in a week to keep away insects and pests. Cleanliness is yet another important aspect that goes a long way in keeping your pet happy and healthy. Rabbits need not require bathing unless it is soaked with dust or dirt. However, you should clean its cage everyday. Not just the cage, you should daily clean and wash all the vessels and bowls used for feeding your rabbit. Also, care should be taken to avoid the cage getting contaminated with left over or decaying eatables.

I have a rat terrier that keeps pooping in the house and in his own crate?

For some reason he keeps pooping in his own crate and my house...i got him neutered it didnt help, I tried the feeding thing..i dont know what to do!!! help!!

How old is you dog??? Maybe you should use a command like "go out" for pee and "go finish" for poop. Some times you just have to wait for them to poop, and keep saying 'go finish". Here are some potty training tips, use what helps, and leave the rest.

I use a crate* to potty train with, but only for potty training and then I break it down and store it. I put blankets and a small food and water dish in the crate. Dogs don't potty where they eat and sleep. When they are first little, I only expect them to hold their potty for 4 hours, and then 6 hours, then 8 hours and so on. So when they are first little, I set a timer or alarm clock to wake myself up at night to take them *out. I only allow my puppy in the bedroom* or the living room, only one room at a time. They have to graduate to more space. If I allow them to have full run of the house, it will overwhelm them. I take them out the same door each time. I tie a dinner bell to the door handle. Do not use a jingle bell as they could get their toe caught in it. So when they are little, I ring the bell for them, and then open the door to go *outside to potty. When they get bigger, I take their paw and whack the bell and open the door to go potty. Eventually getting to the place where the puppy will ring the bell and let me know when they need to go potty. Dogs want to please you, so it is your job to let them know what behaviors please you and what doesn't. So when my puppy goes potty, I give her a treat*, and clap, and make a fuss and praise her. So she learns that going potty outside makes me happy. If she has an accident make a disgust sound like “tsst” and take her out right away. I never yell* or spank* my puppies. Take them out when they first wake up, after they eat or drink, before nap, finish romping, when their activities change, or when they are sniffing around. Some puppies go pee right away, but may not go poop until 10 minutes later, so wait for the poop. I have a little play time here, because sometimes I think they are done, and they are not. Puppies train at their own pace. While I may have a puppy that hasn't had an accident in several weeks, I don't let my guard down. I don't expect my puppies to be "fully potty trained" until one-year-old. If they have a setback, shake it off, and start over. I only have my puppies in the crate when I am not watching them. When I am sleeping, cooking, ironing, doing chores, basically when I am not watching her. All other times, she is out of the crate practicing being a "big girl." This is the time I train her how to behave in the house. So we are practicing "no barking", 'no biting", "no jumping", and "don't eat the furniture." I also have to practice "playing inside" so she doesn't knock over things. You must keep the puppy in sight when they are little because they don’t know the difference between newspaper and carpet, and you don’t want them sneaking off and getting into trouble. Some puppies can sleep through the night around 3-months-old, but their bladder is grown around 6-months-old.

REVISIONS:

*I use a crate to train with. It is the method I prefer, compared to other methods I have tried. While personally, the crate traumatizes me, (it looks like a doggie jail), my puppies do better in the crate. They like it, I guess for the den like feeling, but I noticed that if they are in the crate, while I am doing chores, they are o.k., because the crate allows them to see me and be re-assured. The crate can also be a comfort when stored in the basement for dogs who live in areas where thunderstorms and tornados are an issue. It is a safe secure place for them. However, use the method that works best for you.....a laundry basket, a cardboard box, a woof-woof house, child gates......whatever works for you.

*Outside, pee pad, litter box, whichever method you are using. When the puppy is first little, keep the pee pad, litter box near the food and water dish, so the puppy can eat and drink, and then go potty. You can move it away as they get older. The pee pad has a scent that smells and initiates potty. Sometimes a pee pad makes a sound that scares some puppies, so you might want to use a litter box if that happens. The pee pad allows a puppy to walk around, but a litter box keeps the puppy in one place.

*Bedrooms, I use the bedroom and living room for training, because it works for me. Choose rooms that work for you, but watch for rooms that are damp, or drafty. While my puppies sleep in the bedroom during training, once they are trained, I let them sleep where they want to. They don't have to sleep in the bedroom forever.

*Treats. While I use treats for training, you don't have to. I like Charlee Bears for training (a little cracker for a little mouth,) I use them for training, but once they are trained, I cut back on them. Although I use them to give them pills too. I used different treats for different things. We use one bone at bedtime to let the dogs know it is time to go to bed. We use a big rawhide for when we go on long trips, so they have a bone to amuse them, and they will be expected to hold their potty. When they get the rawhide, they will not eat their food and water, until we get home from our trip. (dogs are funny) Do what works best for you.

*Some puppies will go potty in the same spot each time. Some puppies have to be told to go potty. A command like "go out" for pee, or "go finish" for poop, might work for you, keep saying “go finish” until the puppy poops. This is a good thing to train if you travel with your dogs. By using commands, the puppy won't get confused when you are visiting someone, on vacation with you, or when you get to a new home. The command will tell them what you want them to do in an unfamiliar place. You might also want to use a leash method, so the puppy doesn’t sneak off, or for strange places.

*Yelling. It is not a good idea to "yell" or "spank" your puppy and then take them outside when they have an accident. They may get confused and think that going outside is punishment. While you want to correct them, if you are extreme, they may not want to go outside again. Shake it off, and resume your schedule. You have to keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, but a puppy can only hold their potty for a few hours. A guide would be 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a three-month-old puppy should only be expected to hold their potty for 4 hours at most.

*Sometimes it seems like you take your puppy out 5 million times a day. You can sit on a bench, or folding chair, or a 5 gallon bucket turned upside down to stay in the shade. I use an umbrella for shade too. You can always tape your favorite tv shows. In the winter I microwave a gel pack heating pad, (sold at walmart in the pharmacy, made by Kaz, (I think.) I put the heating pad under my jacket so I won't freeze to death. In the summer, I freeze bottles of water, so we can grab one real fast on our way out the door. I have a mini back pack by the door I can just grab with doggie treats, a flash light, a rubber band for my hair when the wind is bad, etc. Do what works for you.

*Time lines. Keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, so while your last 2 dogs may have trained faster, this puppy might take longer. Training is all about routines, and repeating yourself. It is about rewarding good behaviors, and correcting bad ones. If you have a setback, shake it off, and keep going. Good luck.

There's quite a selection of different dog and puppy potty training techniques you can use, but they all focus on the same outcome - which is the goal of preventing accidents in your house. When training a puppy, one technique used in the more effective house training methods is in encouraging your puppy to do his business outside of the house. Sounds obvious I know, but surprisingly few methods actually have the positive focus.

Whichever methods you decide to use, the main requirement from you is to remain patient and focused - house training a puppy or new dog takes time, and cannot be rushed.

People often feel that older dogs cannot be house broken, but his simply isn't true. Any dog at any age can be taught how to use the bathroom outside of the house. It is important that you keep your dog on a set schedule just as you would a baby. If you are trying to train a puppy then you should take the dog outside every couple of hours and definitely the first thing in the morning, after a meal and after playtime. Puppies under the age of three months are more likely to have accidents around the house because at this age the puppy is still unaware of the fact that they have to go the bathroom until they actually go.

Therefore the crate method of house training may be needed for younger dogs. This means that the dog will be confined to the crate during the times that you are unable to watch them closely to ensure that they don't have an accident in the house. Over time, the puppy is taken from the crate and left around the house because it has learned to use the bathroom outside.

However, if you find that once you have taken your dog out of the crate and they are having accidents once again, this means that you need to use the crate method for a longer period of time. The key to the crate method is that the crate should not be used a punishment. You should make the dog aware of that fact and find another of punishing the dog for any inappropriate behavior. The crate is a place to sleep, much like a den and should be treated as such.

If you have adopted an older dog and you discover that this dog has not be properly housetrained you can still use the create method. However, you must keep in mind that this dog may require a larger crate so that they can move around and sleep comfortably. Puppies need only a small space to sleep, whereas older dogs often like to move around. If by some chance your dog does have an accident in the house it is never a good idea to hit the dog on the nose or rub his or her nose in the mess on the floor. This has been found to only confuse or scare the dog. Scaring the dog is not a method that has been found to be effective when attempting to housetrain your dog.

When training your puppy, you should always keep the dog's food the same until you know that you can trust the dog not to do anything in the house. Changing the dog's food suddenly can have a negative effect on the dog's digestive system, sometimes causing frequent bowel movements. If you do this before the dog is fully house broken you are sure to have a few accidents in your house.
