What grooming tools do you use?

What grooming tools do you use on a medium haired cat? Are there certain things I shouldn't do until my kitten is older?

I agree with Rune. Cats don't really need baths and you can definitely overdo that, drying out the cat's skin and removing the oils in the hair which keeps the coat shiny and soft.

I actually use a "dog" brush with my cats. I have two long-haired ones and got a comb which has swivel teeth in it which doesn't pull on the fur and skin like a flea comb does. So I usually start with the metal prongs on the one side of the dog brush and then I give the cats a combthrough with the swivel comb.

Any good and cheap flea treatment for cats?

I've had my oldest cat for about 9 months, and ever since I got him, he's had fleas. I've tried the back of the neck medicine, but it didn't work. ive been using HARTZ flea and tick collars for my pets ,and it goes amazingly great with my cats , i cn even smell the scented ones on their furr and they are doing fine . recently i bought my puppy the same collar but for puppies, and shes been wearin it for few days now, she doesnt suffer from flea or ticks ,but i cant smell the collar on her ! is it cuz shes big in size? or cuz it did the effect ?, and could the flea collar be used as a normal collar to hold the leash with for emergencies when her collar is broken ? cuz i need to buy her a new one, thanks

I gotta agree 100% about Hartz not being good for animals. When I worked in vet offices and thte Humane Society, we had NUMEROUS cats and dogs come in dead or dying from thier products!!!! I have even seen reports on the news about their fleas drops killing animals and warning people not to use them! Get animals products from your vet or feed store!! If you want the collars just for the aroma, go and get the powder or perfume stuff for pets... or give your dog a bath with good smelling human shampoo... it's better for fleas than flea shampoo anyway (they proved that to me at the Humane Society!).

Fleas

Fleas are parasites and derive most of their food supply from their hosts. Fleas not only feed off dogs, but will bite just about any other mammal they come in contact with, including humans. Dog ticks are another parasite that feeds on blood. Dogs usually get ticks from bushes and shrubbery. The ticks can be removed with a pair of small tweezers, but try not to crush the tick while removing as this may cause its saliva to enter the dog's body, creating a possibility of skin irritation or infection. Remove the parasite as gently as possible.

The dog tick is the primary carrier of diseases like canine ehrlichiosis, and in some cases rocky mountain spotted fever, a disease that is also very dangers to humans. Your dogs should be examined closely for ticks on at least a weekly basis if it spends anytime at all outdoors.

Mites

Mites are microscopic parasites that burrow their way into the dog's body through the skin. All dogs normally have a small population of mites living on their body. However, a condition called Mange can develop if your dog's immune system is not working properly. If you see your dog is losing hair and patches of bare skin are visible, you need to have it checked thoroughly by a vet. A lot of diseases can cause hair loss, so it doesn't necessarily mean your pet has Mange. But only a vet can tell for sure.

Severe scratching is another sign to watch out for. If your dog scratches a lot, you need to have it checked. Also, as the mite population gets out of control, your dog may take on a strange athlete's foot-like odor.

Ivermectin, a commonly used de-wormer is the most common treatment for Mange. The medication is usually administered orally, but it can be injected under the skin. In sever cases, your vet will usually institute a regimen of medicated shampoo treatments.

The question "can fleas carry tapeworm?" might not have ventured into the minds of pet owners yet, but being confronted with this idea is extremely alarming. Can cats use dog flea collars?

I was just recently given some dog flea collars and I was wondering if my cats could use them? I have no clue if it would be harmful at all. Thanks.

Underneath the fur of your pet feline are fleas, tiny parasites that suck their blood. Most cats found at home are the hosts of these cat fleas although they are also seen to infect other animals like rabbits and dogs. Fleas are a common occurrence in a dog’s or cat’s body although in very few amounts. Make sure that it does not develop into Flea Allergy Dermatitis which is a precursor of more serious problems with regards to the skin. An increase in the number of fleas however may lead to a severe loss of blood, causing the host to be anemic. Fleas are also notorious for being carriers for several other parasites such as tapeworm and other organisms.

What are the signs to check if your pet cat has a flea infection? First and most obvious sign is frequent biting and scratching of their fur as if something is irritating them. Since cats normally scratch their fur, it is also vital that you actually take a closer look at your cat’s skin to check for the presence of dark brown crawling insects. It would be quite hard to see if your cat has dark fur so it is also suggested to inspect their beddings as well.

Whenever cats are scratching their fur, these pesky fleas fall off. Another way of checking of the presence of these blood sucking-insects is to rub the fur lightly while they are standing on a big sheet of white paper. Apply a demister afterwards. The presence of dark brown marks with red stains on the paper is a positive indicator of the existence of fleas on your feline.

Removing the fleas from your cat is not quite easy to do since they are found to react quite sensitively to chemicals. There are some products available on the market to help eradicate this problem and leave you feline flea free.

A flea collar is the most common form of a cat flea removal product. Poison is found on these collars in enough quantities to kill those adult fleas on and in the vicinity of the neck and head region. However, the fleas existing on the lower part of the body are not affected.

Another product is the flea shampoo that contains chemicals that can exterminate the fleas. Extreme care must be used to avoid irritating the skin of the cat and causing them much discomfort.

A chemical free technique to get rid of these cat fleas, especially the adult ones is by using a flea comb. Be prepared with a bowl of water with a bit of detergent mixed into it to put the gathered fleas in to drown. Putting a dollop of petroleum jelly on the flea comb can help catch the fleas by letting them stick on the comb easily.

Flea powders may also be utilized but not frequently to avoid drying and irritating the fur and skin of your pet feline.

Oral medicines may be mixed with their food which will be taken up into the blood. When the fleas feed on the blood, it will act by preventing the maturation of their eggs. This method is best used in combination with another method that effectively kills the adult cat flea.

Application of topical creams and ointments may also be effective, depending on brand and the degree of flea infestation. It is usually applied once every month until the cat is free of fleas.

For a successful management of these cat fleas, the area where the cat usually stays is treated as well. These fleas frequently hide in carpets, curtains, beds, and anywhere conducive to its existence. For a total eradication of these cat fleas, it is a highly suggested to have the whole house cleaned and treated from top to bottom, indoors and outdoors. Other pets are also included in the flea free program.

Lastly, it is always recommended to consult with your neighborhood veterinarian first before using any flea removing product to make sure that both you and your feline is safe and on his way to becoming flea free.

Counterfeit or foreign frontline plus?

I had someone order some frontline for me while I was out of town, and it ended up coming from Australia. I haven't been able to find a place that can legitimately tell me whether or not its counterfeit, but as far as I can tell, it looks fine. Numbers match, etc.

All dog owners are familiar with the problems caused by pesky fleas. Fleas are very small wingless insects, brownish red in color, and have sharp mouths by which they obtain blood from their canine hosts. Flea bites usually cause your dog to scratch at affected areas and some dogs are more sensitive than others and can have allergic reactions to flea bites.

In general, fleas do not transmit diseases from dogs to humans, but the potential for this exists and they can and do bite humans as well as dogs and cats.

Fleas and flea larvae live in warm climates and will live until the ground freezes in cooler climates. They can live on in your home well past this time also.

If you suspect that your dog has fleas, you should take him to your veterinarian. Your veterinary staff member will first use a flea comb on your dog.

Flea combs are wide tooth combs and "flea dirt" or dried blood flea excrement is what they are looking for. If this is found, your veterinarian will recommend treatment.

Most veterinarians recommend preventive treatment for fleas as it is much easier to prevent them than to treat them.

For those of you that wish to treat your dog for fleas without commercial products, there are a few recommendations.

One way is to comb your dog with a flea comb regularly. You can put some petroleum jelly on the comb to help fleas stick to the comb. Other people recommend using rubbing alcohol to slow down the fleas so they are easier to catch.

Garlic and Brewers Yeast added as supplements to your dog's food are recommended by those who prefer the natural approach to treating fleas, however, the benefits of these treatments have yet to be proven.

There are several over the counter flea treatments available at your local pet store. However, many of these contain pyrethrins, which are natural insecticides derived from the chrysanthemum plant.

In the past, this kind of treatment of fleas was the only one available to veterinarians. If you choose to use a product containing pyrethrins, you should be aware of the potential side effects.

There is a potential threat of toxicity when using a product containing pyrethrins, not just to your dog, but to other animals in the house and humans as well. Make sure you follow the label usage directions and if you have any questions about using these products, consult your veterinarian.

Today, there are much safer products available. Most of these products are only available through your veterinarian. One of the most popular treatments for fleas is Frontline Plus by Merial. It is topically applied to the skin of your dog on the back of the neck.

According to Merial, Frontline Plus kills 98-100% of adult fleas within 24 hour and will also kill eggs and larvae to prevent fleas from recurring. Frontline Plus is waterproof for up to 30 days and is safe to use on puppies as young as 8 weeks of age.

Another popular flea treatment is Sentinel by Novartis. Sentinel is a monthly pill that also prevents heartworms. Sentinel kills adult fleas, eggs, and larvae.

Novartis also makes the flea control products Program and Capstar. Program is a flavored tablet that is given monthly, and while it does not kill adult fleas, it does interrupt the flea life cycle by preventing the development of flea eggs.

Program is safe to use in dogs and puppies four weeks of age and older. Capstar is a pill that is given to kill adult fleas. It can be given as often as once per day. According to Novartis, Capstar will begin killing adult fleas within 30 minutes. One pill should kill all adult fleas.

Capstar is safe for dogs and puppies four weeks of age and older.

Remember that it is much easier to prevent fleas than to treat them once your dog has them. As with all medications, follow the advice of your veterinarian.

Why does Merial refuse to investigate problems with the efficacy of Frontline and what can we do about it?

If they refuse to do their own internal investigation of the product and continue to assert all failures are due to customer error, can the problem ever be resolved?

Feel free to quote me. Perhaps a petition would be helpful, along with a boycott of Merial products?

I have personally used Frontline Plus for at least 8+ years, or as soon as it became commercially available, whichever is greater. (I cannot remember when the Plus version became available but thats the one I've used ever since it came out; before that it was regular Frontline that I was using, also on a dalmatian and dachshund). It has been effective for me until Spring of 2007 at which time I treated my house twice at intervals to kill fleas in various life-stages, my dogs were given flea shampoo baths or dips to remove all fleas and ticks from them, my yard was treated, and after waiting an appropriate time period after bathing, as directed by FrontlinePlus' insert instructions, Frontline Plus was applied to my dogs as per label directions. All bedding was washed regularly, I vacuum weekly and remove the bag which has flea killer in it, and all areas in the home and yard were also treated with products I had good results with for many years in this same location. My home treatments of choice are HotShot or RAID bug bombs alternated with diatomaceous earth, and I treat my yard occasionally with either a dish soap and water mist mixture or Sevindust.

I noticed a diminished effect in Frontline Plus after a week it was no longer working on ticks -- my dogs were picking up multiple ticks who were staying on the dogs until I removed and killed the ticks -- and then after ten days to two weeks was also apparently no longer effective repelling or killing fleas on my dogs either, despite no additional wetting of the dogs. The product was applied as directed in the dosages advised -- applied by my vet at monthly intervals, consecutively, for the months cited above.

I was not finding fleas in my home and concluded that the products I 've used to treat my home have been effective. After the flea bath, I also found that to be temporarily effective; no fleas or ticks remained on the dogs. I use Adams flea and tick shampoo.

I concluded the problem must be the Frontline Plus. I used it in 2007 from April through October applied once per month to decreasing effect.

I retreated the house and yard in October 2007, and treated the dogs again once per month with Frontline Plus in April of 2008 - at which time I noted the exact same, exceedingly poor results.

I still do not appear to be having much problem with fleas in the house or carpet or bedding (I have at least one dog as well as me being very sensitive to them and allergic to bites so we notice immediately if there are a few fleas around!) as of late July 2008 (products applied 3 weeks ago as described below) but, exasperated with this situation, I switched flea treatment products on my least sensitive adult dog in May 2008 to Adams topical treatment, which appeared to work well. During my change-over I continued to use Frontline Plus with diminished to no effect, on my other dogs, interspersed with a flea and tick bath as necessary as well as using a flea comb 2 to 4 times per day on each dog who was still on Frontline Plus and manually removing any parasites. I found no ticks or fleas on the dog I tried Adams on, at all for a month so in June 2008 I applied Adams to two of my dogs with the same good results while again using Frontline on the third dog. In July 2008 I also put the product on my third dog the most sensitive one, he had no problems with it and I have found no fleas or ticks on any of the dogs or in the house since then. I do have at least as much trouble here with ticks as fleas, or moreso with ticks. I will therefore be switching to Adams brand and discontinuing the use of Frontline and all Merial products.

I have not yet tried any other topical products because I got good results with Adams. I also had a friend who has one indoor cat who is allergic to some other treatments, use adams feline successfully with a similar control strategy.

I dont know what to tell you about getting Merial to admit the problem or take steps to remedy it but I will be boycotting their products unless or until they do so, I will be mentioning this on the many dog forums I belong to, as well as to dog owners at my vet and in my community, and I will be happy to participate in contacting the company or to sign a petition to them. I am beyond disgusted with both the inefficacy of their product and their poor customer service you encountered. I'm sorry for your bad experience and highly irritated with my own, as well. I think this is completely unacceptable of Merial on both counts. Thank you for posting this!

i honestly prefer if there's some bush.

The best way is start grooming your puppy is when he first comes home with you, but if you have an adult dog who balks at grooming here are a few dog care tips.

The first time you bring out the nail clippers hold the clippers in your hand next to the dog's paw and give him a treat with praise. The next time hold the dog's paw and place his nail in the nail clipper but don't cut. Again praise him and reward with treats. When the dog calmly accepts you holding his paw and bringing the clipper to his nail, and placing the nail in the clipper, then cut the nail quickly and confidently. Don't be nervous because your dog will pick up on that emotion. Praise your dog and give him a treat.

Do this with the other dog grooming tools as well. The dog will associate being groomed with praise and treats. Keep your first grooming sessions short. Right before his dinner is a good time. Your dog will be alert and hungry which means he'll be more motivated. He'll start to associate grooming with dinner as well as treats.

Don't lose your temper. Keep a smile on your face and the sessions as pleasant as possible.

Most dogs don't mind having their teeth brushed and actually like it. If your dog struggles, use the same method with the toothbrush as you did with the nail clippers. Your first session, hold a treat in one hand and the toothbrush with a bit of dog toothpaste by his mouth. Give him the treat and lots of praise. Then gently lift his lip, again reward with a treat and praise. Finally lift his lip and gently scrub his side teeth. The dog should get a taste of the toothpaste and your struggles will be over. Don't overdo the toothpaste, a little is enough.

Veterinarians say that the most common pet health care problem is their teeth. If your dog has tarter it could turn into a serious problem resulting in infection, loss of teeth, and at the very least, very bad breath. Tarter is that yellowish soon to turn brownish hard build up next to the gum line. Prevention by brushing is much easier than getting rid of tarter. Most of the time that means a professional cleaning and it's expensive. Dogs don't sit still to have their teeth cleaned like people do, so they have to be under a general anesthetic and that's costly.

One method that seems to work with some dogs to get rid of a mild case of tarter is gently swapping their teeth with a piece of gauze soaked in medicinal strength (not hair bleach strength) hydrogen peroxide every day.

When brushing your dog's coat, hold the hair with one hand on the skin side of a tangle and use the brush with your other hand to brush out the tangle. That way your dog won't feel the pull of the brush as much. Use a people hair detangling spray to make the brushing even easier.

Use these dog care tips for grooming your dog and the sessions should be fun for both of you.
