How can I stop my 9 year old dog from peeing and pooing in the house?

This is a totally new behaviour? She has been a very well behaved and toilet trained dog all her adult life. We recently have had someone new move into the house which could be a stress indicator however even with this person away she is still peeing. She has also started barking at night, again a new behaviour.

We have tried anti-biotics as we thought she may have an infection but these have made no difference. Someone suggested dog pheromones to relax her during the day. Does this work?

don't listen to that danni babe twat shes talking out her ass. you NEVER rub a dogs nose in its own mess as this causes the dog to be scared and worried of you and will more likely make matters worse. if you have been to the vets to check her for health problems and they have said she is fine then it could well be the new person who has moved in she may think that she wont get as much attention as she did before the new person came to live with you make sure you give her lots of fuss and get the new person to do the same then she might not see them as so much of a threat. i would recommend giving your dog anything that a vet has not prescribed if in doubt have a chat with your vet im sure hes heard of this sort of behaviour before and he can advise you on the best thing to do.... good luck

Electric Shock Collars

Electric shock collars work by delivering a zap or shock to your dog's neck each time he barks above a certain decibel level. So, would you put an electric shock collar on your child to prevent him or her from crying? A similar consideration should then be weighed concerning your dog wearing an electric dog bark collar.

Electric shocks are unpleasant, painful and mentally upsetting. They can lead to symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, which translates to fearful and possibly overly aggressive dogs. Also, it's unclear what, if any, side effects there are of electric shock therapy.

Ultrasonic or Noise Collars

If your dog is wearing an ultrasonic noise collar, then he is treated to an extremely high-pitched and unpleasant siren noise every time he barks above a particular decibel level. That said, these collars rarely work and could even encourage barking.

Not all dogs have ultrasonic hearing nor can they necessarily hear super high-pitched noises. Also, because the owner can't hear the collar, there's no way to tell if it's even working.

Besides being ineffective, the collar may actually encourage barking if your dog can hear it. Most dogs bark in response to a noise or as part of a call and response. If each time they bark they get a response, albeit a high-pitched wail, they may continue barking, but louder.

A Humane Choice - Citronella

Probably the most humane bark collar is the citronella spray model. Basically, each time the dog barks above a certain decibel level, the collar emits a light mist of citronella, which is an irritating scent for canines. The experience is somewhat unpleasant, but not painful or unnecessarily cruel. Eventually, the dog will connect its barking to the citronella scent.

Where to Find Citronella Collars

There are two major and popular brands for citronella dog collars - these are the Premiere Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Collar and the MultiVet No Bark Spray Collar.

The Premiere Gentle Spray Collar is significantly more expensive than other brands and usually costs between $70 and $80. However, online specials can often be found for as low as $30 to $40. Refills for this product typically cost less than $5, but it comes with a full-sized can of citronella.

The MultiVet No Dog Bark Collar costs slightly less, but is better suited for smaller dogs. The collar is adjustable, though more able to carry the weight of the citronella pouch when it's set to a smaller size.

No one enjoys owning a yappy dog, so there is compelling motivation to train your beloved canine to keep the peace. However, there are both compassionate and ugly ways to accomplish this important task. Any pet owner can demonstrate a loving approach to training by using a collar that meets the goal without harming the animal.

Have you used one of those anti-bark collars that uses the spray (I think it's citronella) rather than shock

to get your dog to stop barking? How well do they work? Is there anything cruel or unusual about this type of collar?

Yes. The Shelter I work for suggests these collars ( citronella ) for people having problems with barking dogs. They work very well. The strong odor affects the dogs because of their strong sense of smell. My friend , who is a vet, uses it on her Great dane. Its very rare he actually gets sprayed because it usually just takes one or two times, and the dog doesn't wanna bark with it on. Very effective product, I highly reccomend it

EDIT IG64... citronella does not have a lasting odor. Once sprayed the odor goes away very quickly, thats the reason they use citronella in the collar. The few hundred dogs that I have seen with these collars on react to the initial spray, then they are not bothered after that. And it does not spray on the face of the dog, it sprays a mist in front of the dog, its designed not to spray directly in the dogs face

A dog that barks all day and night can ruin your life and make war with your neighbors.

There is a huge range of training collars for dogs and a vociferous debate among owners and trainers as to whether these collars are humane and effective or whether they are cruel and counterproductive.

Different types of collar are used for different purposes. The two main uses are for distance control, when the dog is out of the trainer's immediate reach and is not on a leash and the second aim is to control excessive barking.

The distance training collar enables the trainer to administer a shock to the dog, by using a handheld transmitter which causes an electric pulse in the collar. This distracts the dog from whatever undesirable behavior it is currently doing and lets the trainer get his attention.

Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For instance, your dog won't come when you call him and pays you no attention, so you clicj the remote. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. There will be many people who claim that one of these collars has saved their dog' life. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

If you have the time, the patience and the knowledge, then by far the best solution is to train your dog to bark at appropriate times and to get him to "Speak and be "Quiet" on command. There are plenty of excellent training courses available at reasonable prices. More details in the links below.

However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.

Get it right and you'll have friendly neighbors, peaceful nights and a happy dog!

Has anyone had any luck with the citronella anti-bark collars???

My Doberman/German Shepard mix is a nuisance barker. I've tried positive reinforcement training and electric shock collar (which I didn't like and didn't work). He barks at anything and everything from birds to people talking a block away. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the citronella collar or anything else that would help to stop or at least lessen his barking. Please don't tell me to take him to a trainer, there aren't any around for hundreds of miles.

Sorry....my brother has a fifteen month old dobie, and he has the same problem with him! He's tried one of these collars, and it was just a waste of money!! He stopped yapping momentarily the first time it was used, and then just ignored it from then on!!

Do a lot of pro trainers use the No Bark Shock Collars to train dogs not to bark?

Well, this is actually a different situation than most may have. This dog, we've just rescued from being put down at a kill shelter, has apparently been spoiled like crazy, even though it ahd never been indoors and had never had a bath in 6 years. Still, it must have gotten lots of attention or something because everyone will be sleeping at night and all of a sudden the basset hound will start barking at 4 in the morning or 5 in the morning wanting attention. It doesn't know when to stop. It'll do it for hours. Everyone has said to ignore it and that giving in is the WORST thing to do because it'll think that by barking it will get it's way. So someone insisted a no bark collar.

Sure, doesn't mean it's any good. There are alternatives. ANYBODY can slap 'PRO' in front of their name. Remember, you don't NEED schooling to become a dog trainer.

Training a dog is as important as feeding it. The fact that having a pet is a responsibility cannot be overemphasized. The owner must establish a good relationship with her dog. And the best way to establish this desired good relationship is to conduct dog training. Training a dog must become a regular activity. And in order to get the best out of dog training, the owner, who is also the dog trainer, must know the basics of different kinds of training.

Kinds of Dog Training Methods

The methods of training dogs are based on the way the trainer reinforces the pet's behavior. The reinforcement can be positive and this is done by giving rewards. The reinforcement can be negative and this is accomplished by giving corrections. Or the reinforcement can be neither positive nor negative and this is carried out by using a neutral sound, such as a click. The trainer can use all three kinds of reinforcement in various situations.

Rewards

The goal of positive reinforcement is to encourage the repetition of a certain behavior. For example, when the dog trainer gives the command "sit," and the dog actually sits, the trainer can immediately give the reward. There are many forms of rewards. The most common form is the dog treat. But in the absence of a dog treat, the trainer can use other forms such as verbal praise, an affectionate rub, and the dog toy.

Corrections

The goal of negative reinforcement is to make the pet discontinue a specific behavior. For example, when the dog is given the command to sit and he does not sit or even barks, the trainer can correct the behavior by physically holding the dog and making it sit, while verbally repeating the command. The theory is that the dog will associate the command with the position that it is being forced into. Similar to rewards, corrections may also come in different forms. It can be a verbal "No!" that will signal the dog that its owner is not pleased. Or the correction can be very physical such as the use of electric shock collars. For example, if the dog is not allowed to enter a specific room, the collar will send an electric shock if the dog crosses the threshold towards this room. Some dog trainers, however, do not approve of electric shock collars. They believe that the best dog training methods need not involve anything that will give pain.

Clicks

A click is a neutral sound. But the variations of it can be used to make the pet understand that a certain behavior is desirable and another behavior is not welcome. The major advantage of the use of clicks in dog training is that the dog trainer need not physically hold the dog. This kind of reinforcement is the preferred method of many professional dog trainers. These trainers claim that clicking is efficient and flexible.

Once the dog owner is familiar with the different methods of training dogs, the next step is to decide which kind of dog training will be carried out first. Some of the popular kinds of dog training are dog agility training, dog potty training, dog house training, and dog obedience training. These can be carried out one by one or simultaneously.

I know we humans can hear 20 Hz to 20 KHz, but what frequencies do they use in those "anti-dog barking devices"?

The Ergo Systems No Bark Trainer is an ultrasonic barking control device for dogs.

I have mixed opinions about ultrasonic collars and systems. It is still not 100% known whether dog's feel pain (and other animals for that matter) when hearing the ultrasonic sound. Because we humans can not hear it, we simply can't relate to the effect.

However, they are still a better choice than cruel electric shock collars which I am dead against.

So how does the Ergo system stack up?

If you look around the internet you will find mixed reviews on this trainer

Some people absolutely love it, whilst others simply said it did nothing for their dog and was a waste of money.

My conclusion therefore is that the Ergo Systems No Bark Trainer will work for some dogs - but not others. That means it is a long shot to actually buy the product (its not one of the cheapest out there), only to have it do nothing for your dog's barking. Thankfully you will be able to get a refund from all reputable online stores if this occurs.

You can buy this device for around $55 online, so it costs more than most Citronella collars.

I of course highly recommend that you attempt to train your dog with traditional positive reinforcement behavioral training before trying any sort of anti-barking collar or device. If your dog can stop inappropriate barking through training rather than through fear of retribution, he will become a better behaved dog in the long run.

I had to train my chocolate lab because he is allowed to walk freely with me on my neighborhood walks. I decided to try shock collars. I started out with an inexpensive model that had a range of about 300 feet and had seven levels of sensitivity.

The literature that came with the product describes the shock that is delivered as something like static electricity. I accidentally shocked myself one day and that is exactly what it is. The sensation you feel is just like the static electricity you get on a cold dry day. It is mildly unpleasant as you know if you have experience touching someone and receiving the shock from static electricity.

I used this to train my dog to listen to me when I gave a command and it made the training much easier. I have since graduated to a model that had 15 levels of stimulation as well as a tone which only the dog can hear and delivers no stimulation. You can also set the tone to sound when you deliver the stimulation so the dog with the shock collar anticipates the stimulation when you use the tone only feature.

I have two labs and whenever we go on our walks they are free to roam but the dog training shock collars bring them back quickly if they venture to far or other people or animals are approaching. Most of the time I don't even deliver any stimulation and just use the tone. Actually just putting the collar on turned off is very effective in a lot of cases especially if there are no other dogs to chase. The dogs are well trained now and the only reason I even use the collar is just in case the cat or squirrel runs by.

Anyone used remote trainers (electric shock collars) to condition 2 pit bulls not to fight?

I'm at my wits end with my 2 neutered female pit bulls. Suddenly, the younger (age 1 and a half) one attacks the older (age 3) one for no reason and a vicious fight ensues. I've tried everything - muzzling, more exercise, recognizing the dominance of the younger dog, asking for advice. The bottom line seems to be "crate and rotate", which is what I have been doing, but I really dislike it even besides the inconvenience. I have an electric fence on my property and that works like magic. My dogs will NOT cross their boundaries even IF they aren't wearing their collars because they've been conditioned to know that if they do, they will get a shock. I'm wondering if I'd have such sucess with remote training collars for the fighting problem. Two collars would cost about $300 to $400, so I'd sure like to hear from others who may have had real-life experience with this issue, especially with this breed, before I put out that much money for nothing.

I wouldnt recommend using a shock collar while they are fighting. It produces a zap and when the dog cries out, the other dog will take it as a sign of weakness.
Try this:
When to dogs start to get into it (like immediately) you have to become the alpha and put it in it's place.
If you are able to get them to stop (not recommended to put your hands in there but a leash or stick works). Put them both on the ground. (On their sides or backs). This is the submissive positions and in the wild, the pack leader will put the dogs on the ground if they get out of line.

Check out Ceaser Milan-that man is a genious. There are episodes that are similar to your situation and you can get some pointers from there.

The use of electronic training devices has become increasingly widespread. In 2006 pet owners worldwide purchased more than 500,000 remote training collars, over 1,000,000 containment systems, and almost 900,000 bark collars.

Why the popularity? These training systems have become much more affordable, and pet owners are finding them to be a safe, effective means for controlling the various behaviors that they find unacceptable.

As sales of these products increase, so do the not so favorable opinions about them -- that they make dogs aggressive, that there is a greater chance of failure than success when using them, that the shock they deliver is painful, that they will result in significant injury to your pet.

These can all be classified as "myths", since there is very little hard data available to prove or disprove them. However, recent studies are providing results that allow for a more reasoned analysis of this technology.

Last year, one of the major manufacturers of electronic training products retained an independent laboratory to compare the level of correction produced by a pet containment system receiver to the shock produced by other common circumstances and devices. The evaluation demonstrated that the "shock" produced by a containment system is nowhere near the intensity that some people believe.

The "shock" produced by the containment system is nearly 40% less that than that one would receive from walking on carpet. (Please note that static shock will vary greatly depending on the relative humidity: the lower the humidity, the higher the shock.)

Further, this study demonstrates that the training "shock" is one-fourth the level of a cattle fence and one-twentieth the level of a stun gun, two devices to which electronic training equipment is often unfairly compared.

But even this study tells only half the story. It compared the voltage put out by these devices...the intensity. You also need to consider the duration. Reputable brands of electronic training equipment correct for only a short period of time. The brand that has the UL mark of approval on its receiver features a correction that lasts only 1/40 of a second -- less time than it takes the average person to snap their fingers.

But what this study does demonstrate is that not all "shock" is the same. And that the correction in question is not "painful," "powerful" or even "uncomfortable." "Surprising" maybe, but none of the above.

Still, every animal will react differently to the correction. So you should always approach a training situation with caution when using this kind of equipment. As is usually the case, education is the answer. When you are training a pet, you need to have as much information as possible...and a behavior management plan to support you, as you would with traditional training techniques. When looking at selecting a product select one that provides you with both instructional manuals and videos.

If you choose a product that supplies you with these necessary educational materials you will greatly increase your chances of success when attempting to improve your dog's behavior. To help demonstrate this fact let's look at a survey that was recently completed by a leading manufacturer of electronic training equipment.

This company surveyed 1,025 dog owners that had been using one of three types of electronic training equipment (remote training collar, bark control collar or containment system) for a period of not less than 90 days.

The most significant findings came as the result of asking the pet owner the following question, "Since using the electronic training product how would you describe your pet's overall behavior?" The owner was asked to respond with one of the following: a) better behaved (and specifically how), b) no change in behavior or c) worse behaved (and specifically how).

The results are staggering. Slightly over 2/3 (860 of 1,025 dog owners) responded that their dogs overall behavior had in fact improved since using the electronic equipment.

Reasons that these dogs would show an overall improvement in their behavior would include that the owners used the equipment correctly. Correct use includes spending a significant amount of time working with and socializing with your dog. When a dog receives an increase in time and attention, his behavior will usually change for the better.

This survey also helps to dispel another myth about the use of electronic training equipment - that it causes dogs to act aggressive. None of the dog owners surveyed purchased the equipment for the purpose of eliminating aggressive behavior. However, approximately 12% stated that another positive side effect of using the equipment was that their dog no longer exhibited occasional aggressive behavior that had been seen in the past. Also, of those owners stating that their dogs behavior worsened in some way since using the equipment, none reported the worsening being in the form of aggressive behavior.

Has anyone ever used the dog collars that claim to stop barking?

I have a beagle pup (4 months) and we have received an informal complaint about his barking and yelps early in the morning (0500-0600) Searched the net and have found two types, the slight shock ones when the dog barks or the high pitched sound that only dogs can hear. Anyone got any advice on either? I would prefer not to use anything, but with both my wife and I working full time I don't want to upset the neighbours. Apart from the early morning barks he is perfect. Thanks in advance

I tried the shock collar but it turns the pup into a mean thing or it can break their spirit almost, though I never tried the sound ones I do hear that its most effective from my neighbor who uses it.

Every dog owner loves their dog but training them can be a real nightmare for many people. There are many reasons for this including the dog testing the will of the owner and also the owner simply not being strict enough. If you have tried the traditional rewarding good behaviour method only to find you are making little or no progress, then looking at alternatives such as the electric shock collar might be worth it. These collars have been around for a few decades already but for smaller dogs these collars were simply too strong because there wasn't an adjustment for shock levels. Professionals in the dog training industry used these collars to train hunting dogs however now there are electric shock collars that are much better designed for the domestic dog. When buying an electric dog training collar you will notice that there are two main types, there's a bark collar and then there's a beeper collar.

As you may have guessed, the bark collar is specifically designed to train your dog to stop barking. It does this by emitting an electric shock whenever your dog barks. Hopefully before long, your dog will learn to stop this bad behaviour. The great thing about this sort of collar is that training your dog can happen day or night and if you're out at work then the collar will continue working when your dog is at home. Many dog owners find out that their dog has been barking during the day when no one is home and this can make your neighbors really angry. If you want to keep your neighbors happy then buying this sort of collar is very much advisable. The collar trains your dog when you can't.

The problem with training a dog is that your dog cannot understand what you are saying. So you cannot simply go home and tell your dog that it's been very naughty for barking all day and that the neighbors have been complaining. As intelligent dogs are, we cannot communicate with them that well. These electric shock collars are relatively cheap and there isn't anything complex about them. There is a microphone which senses when your dog barks and this then causes the electric shock to be administered.

Beeper collars on the other hand are operated by you using a remote transmitter. These are much more costly to buy and are pretty complex in comparison. Instead of a simple unit there is a radio transmitter and a radio receiver attached to the dog's collar. The benefit of this type of training collar is that it can deal with more than just barking. There may be other forms of bad behaviour that you want to get out of your dog such as digging holes in your lawn or jumping up on people. However with these situations, you would need to have the transmitter to hand so that you can operate it.

Whatever types of electric shock collar you buy it's important that you ensure that the setting levels aren't too high. The purpose of the collar is simply to make your dog uncomfortable; you don't actually want to inflict any real pain. Only use the minimum amount of shock that you can.

Electric shock only when I touch people?

Anyone else have this? I do it quite often but not with everyone. Ive researched some ppl are charged more and when a positive charged person touches a negative charged person it levels you out.
But thing is I dont get shocks from objects...Only people.
And they ask me, why do you always shock me so I know it doesnt happen with them & others often.
Kinda weird? Anyone else the same?

Should electric shock dog collars be banned? I say yes. And I don't just say yes in a mild manner, I strongly say yes. The equipment should be banned because it's cruel and unreliable.

Using pain to discourage unwanted behaviour is simply wrong. You could and should be using rewards to encourage good behaviour instead of relying on punishment to train. The bottom line is that you can and absolutely should train your dog without the use of painful shock therapy.

The concept of how this equipment works is simply horrific. It allows the trainer or owner to remotely deliver an electric shock to a dog in order to suppress an undesirable behaviour. Shock collars train a dog to respond out of fear of further pain and even allow increasing the pain level if the dog continues its bad behaviour.

Scientific research confirms that this method is painful and can influence the animal's well being negatively in the long term. There is clear evidence that the use of this devices is unsafe, unnecessary and inhumane.

Experiments showed that shocks can cause responses associated with fear and distress such as yelping, struggling, hiding, biting, freezing, trembling, cowering, defecation and urination, just to name a few. They can make a dog scared of almost anything that they are looking at or smelling when they get shocked.

Shock collars also have a high potential for misuse, especially if they get into the hands of owners who may be inexperienced, impatient, angry, frustrated or even sadistic. Regrettably, they often do.

All experts agree that there is absolutely no need to use this sort of equipment. Positive, reward based training methods are far more effective than punishment or negative reinforcement methods.

I have no doubt that shock collar training can be at least superficially effective, but your dog could end up being afraid of you or even damaged in the long term. The use of reward-based training is far more effective and results in a more positive relationship between the dog and the owner.

Luckily, shock collars has already been subjected to ban or control in a number of countries in Europe, including France and Germany. But they are still widely available and used in the US.

I would never consider using a shock collar on my dogs. I've always used positive reinforcement to train them and had nothing but great results. Remember, dogs need training not punishment.
