While there are several dog tag formats extant around the world, it’s the US Army dog tags form that we are most familiar with. They list the surname, given name, social security number (originally service number), blood type and religion - stamped on small oval pieces of metal that are worn on a metal chain around the neck. The U.S. Army was the first branch to authorize identification tags in War Department General Order No. 204, dated December 20, 1906. The Army altered its regulations on July 6, 1916, and now all soldiers are issued two ID tags -- one to remain with the body and the other to go to the individual responsible for the burial for record-keeping purposes. After WWII, the US Navy Department adopted the same dog tags used by the US Army and Air Force, which led to a single size and shape to become the American standard of today.

During World War II, dog tags were first worn by civilians when soldiers often gave them to loved ones before deployment or when dating, very much like the high school or college tradition of giving a girlfriend one's letterman jacket or school ring to wear. Also, in the 1950s, at the height of fears about a possible nuclear war with the USSR, it is rumored that all New York City public school pupils were issued dog tags to identify them in the event of war.

In recent years, the wearing of dog tags has found its way into the fashions favored by the younger generation through a style first termed as “military chicâ€. Originally, they were worn as a part of a pseudo-style of military uniform by teens and college students wishing to put forward a tough or militaristic image, dog tags have since gained prominence in broader fashion circles, also becoming popular with celebrities like movie or rock stars and athletes. The tags can be engraved with a person's personal details, sentiments for a loved one, their beliefs or tastes, a favorite quote, or may bear the name and/or logo of a popular band or performer.

Like its military cousin, for the longest time identification tags used to aid in finding lost pets were all stamped or embossed on metal blanks which were more or less limited to a finite amount of information proscribed by the size of the embossed letters used on the tags by the machines employed for stamping. emotional support animal?

I know that an emotional support animal is not the same as a service dog but how do you make your pet an emotional support dog and what are the rules I know there are no rules in training and stuff like that but do you have to fill out a paper or get some kind of ID? Where do you get a vest/ what color does it have to be? Does anyone know the rules with having an emotional support animal in a house where it says "no pets"?

Emotional support animals have no need for a vest because they don't go anywhere that pet dogs aren't allowed.

There are some minimum training standards. The animal must be fully house trained and sufficiently well mannered to not be a threat to neighbors or workmen and must not be a nuisance say by barking frequently or continuously. In some cases a landlord may enforce restrictions on breed or size, or require that the animal be spayed, neutered, or declawed (in the case of cats). That depends a lot on jurisdiction and how long you've had the animal vs how long you've had the landlord.

What you need is a letter from your mental health provider, the one who is treating you for your mental illness, that states that you are severely impaired by mental illness, that an emotional support animal helps to alleviate at least some of your symptoms of mental illness, and that in the mental health professional's opinion the presence of an emotional support animal is necessary for your treatment plan.

Then you write a letter to your landlord requesting a reasonable accommodation, specifically an exception to the "no pets" rule, so that you can keep an emotional support animal. Include the letter from your doctor and any supporting evidence you have of your pet's good behavior, either from a previous landlord or with a pet resumé you create yourself.

If your landlord agrees, you're good to go. If not, you're probably best off looking for different housing. Why? Because filing a complaint and going to court is a lengthy and emotionally devastating process. I've interviewed several people who pursued their cases to court and even won settlements in their favor and without exception each and every one has stated it was the worst experience of their lives and they would never do it again. When you start out with a person with severe mental illness and subject them to that kind of emotional stress, you have a recipe for disaster.

I'm often asked how you register or certify your service dog, the answer is "You Don't". Companies that claim to register or certify your animal without training are simply taking advantage of the handicapped to make a dollar. In 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) went into effect which gives handicapped persons with service animals legal protection to be accompanied by the animal in public places.

Understanding the ADA

So lets first define what a service animal is, According to the ADA, an animal is considered a service animal" if it has been "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability." As you see, the word certify or registered doesn't appear in the law. As a matter fact the US government does not register, certify, license or approve any animal.

The ADA Catch 22

Because the definition of a disability is so broad it would be impossible for the government to create any sort of testing criteria other then the vague definition above. Also, since many disabled people live on fixed incomes requiring professional animal training would be an added financial burden that many disabled people could not afford. Unlike a person with a handicap license plate or ID, there is no official identification and service dogs without some form of ID are often assumed to be pets. The ADA also states that a handicapped person is not required to show proof of their disability. So that's what the law says, but the reality is that having your service animal identified with an ID, vest, cape or bandanna helps identify the dog as a working partner and not a pet.

The Registration Scam

It wasn't long after the ADA went into effect that companies started popping up offering to register or certify your animal. Now please understand that we are not talking about trainers that teach dogs to perform tasks for the disabled. What we are talking about are companies that use official sounding names that in exchange for your money will certify or register your service dog. In exchange they often provide you with a registration number, certificate, patch and maybe a cheap laminated tag. Some shameless companies charge as much as $250 for "registration".

So What's a Service Dog Owner to do?

First, make sure you meet the definition of a disabled person and that your dog is specially trained to perform tasks related to your disability. Trying to pass off your pet as a service animal is a federal offense and comes with severe penalties. Outside of the two requirements spelled out in the ADA you don't have to do anything. If you feel identifying your service dog will make your life easier then purchase a quality photo service dog tag, vest with patches or a cape.

Help!! i just got my bf an engraved dog tag for valentines day and...?

4. Get an embroidered personalised dog collar with your name and phone number. This ensure that if for some reason the tag has come loose from the collar, or an old person who cant read the small engraving text, can still easily find your phone number from the large text embroidery on the collar!
5. Check the details are up to date at regular intervals, if you move, change name, or phone number then get your pet identification updated immediately.

What sort of information is on an army dog tag?

I want to get my friend an inscribed dog tag for her birthday-she's into that sort of thing. What needs to be on it for it to be 'authentic'?

I would advise against an authentic dog tag since if she lost it, her identity is open for the world to see/steal.

I would just go with name, blood type, religion, and a nickname to make it intersting without revealing.

My dog ate the Halloween candy...?

So I have a 10 month old Weimaraner.. I went to the store last night after the trick or treaters had finished and while I was gone the cat and the dog tag teamed knocking over the candy bowl.

If it's been this long since he ate them, he's not going to die of Chocolate poisoning, no.

He'll probably continue to feel out of sorts for another 24 hours or so. Diarrhea, maybe some vomiting.

You may want to run out and buy some unflavored Pedialyte to keep him hydrated, as dehydration is a real concern with the amount he's been vomiting. (You'd generally dilute it by half with water.)

If you can't get out, any plain broth you have in the house could be added to his water to entice him to drink more.

If he starts to look any worse, I'd call the vet. He could be dehydrated.

Most people will happily walk their dog, fewer people walk their cats. You may not be aware that cats can learn to walk on a lead. There are harnesses, and leads designed just for cats. Some cat owners have taken to walking their cats to avoid disputes with neighbours or where road traffic is heavy.

Cat collars are not normally designed to be used with a cat lead. The shape of a cat's head makes it too easy for a collar attached to a lead to pop right off. Instead, collars are used for other reasons. They place jeweled or patterned collars on their cats simply because they like the way these collars look. Other people use cat collars to hold I.D. tags, so that their cat more easily identified as their cats found. Of course, a common reason for putting a collar on a cat is to warn birds of his approach. Collars with bells on them may be a low tech alarm system, but they work. Finally some owners use a flea collar to ward off fleas.

Whatever an owners reason for investing in a collar I would recommend that a snag proof version is used. These are designed to let a cat escape if the collar becomes entangled. Every year many cats are strangled unnecessarily when their collars are caught in hanging articles such the branches of a tree.

Cat harnesses are specially designed to stay securely on a cat, even when the cat is on a lead. You can buy a simple nylon harness for your cat or you can find more deluxe models that look more like padded vests. As long as the harness is completely adjustable, it should work well.

Cat leads can be standard leads or retractable models. Whichever type of lead you choose be sure that it is lightweight enough to allow your cat to move easily under its weight. Retractable leads are ideal for people who want to allow their cats to explore their surroundings in a park or other traffic safe area, but want to keep the cats close by when they are walking to and from their homes.

To train your cat to walking on a lead, you should use a variation of techniques to used to train dogs. Cats like Dogs respond well to praise, the difference is Cats do not respond well to negative correction; so giving a quick tug on the lead when they do not stay at your side will not teach a cat to heel. Instead, praise your cat when he does what you want and ignore him when he does the wrong thing. Be realistic, although you can teach your cat to tolerate a lead, don't expect cats to consistently heel on command.

Like most animals even humans the best results can be achieved when starting training early. The easiest way to teach your cat is to use a lead is to start when it is a young kitten of eight to ten weeks old. Place the harness on your cat and allow it to walk about completely unrestrained. After a few days, add the lead. Be sure that you do not apply any pressure. Once your cat is used to the lead, you can pick it up and teach it that it is ok for you to be on the other end of the lead. Gently apply pressure to the lead and call your cat to you. Praise the cat softly when it responds. Eventually, he will become used to following you when he is on his lead.
