How can I stop my 9 year old dog from peeing and pooing in the house?

This is a totally new behaviour? She has been a very well behaved and toilet trained dog all her adult life. We recently have had someone new move into the house which could be a stress indicator however even with this person away she is still peeing. She has also started barking at night, again a new behaviour.

don't listen to that danni babe twat shes talking out her ass. you NEVER rub a dogs nose in its own mess as this causes the dog to be scared and worried of you and will more likely make matters worse. if you have been to the vets to check her for health problems and they have said she is fine then it could well be the new person who has moved in she may think that she wont get as much attention as she did before the new person came to live with you make sure you give her lots of fuss and get the new person to do the same then she might not see them as so much of a threat. i would recommend giving your dog anything that a vet has not prescribed if in doubt have a chat with your vet im sure hes heard of this sort of behaviour before and he can advise you on the best thing to do.... good luck

Electric Shock Collars

Electric shock collars work by delivering a zap or shock to your dog's neck each time he barks above a certain decibel level. Ultrasonic or Noise Collars

Not all dogs have ultrasonic hearing nor can they necessarily hear super high-pitched noises. Also, because the owner can't hear the collar, there's no way to tell if it's even working.

Besides being ineffective, the collar may actually encourage barking if your dog can hear it. Most dogs bark in response to a noise or as part of a call and response. If each time they bark they get a response, albeit a high-pitched wail, they may continue barking, but louder.

A Humane Choice - Citronella

Probably the most humane bark collar is the citronella spray model. Basically, each time the dog barks above a certain decibel level, the collar emits a light mist of citronella, which is an irritating scent for canines. The experience is somewhat unpleasant, but not painful or unnecessarily cruel. Eventually, the dog will connect its barking to the citronella scent.

Where to Find Citronella Collars

There are two major and popular brands for citronella dog collars - these are the Premiere Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Collar and the MultiVet No Bark Spray Collar.

The Premiere Gentle Spray Collar is significantly more expensive than other brands and usually costs between $70 and $80. However, online specials can often be found for as low as $30 to $40. Refills for this product typically cost less than $5, but it comes with a full-sized can of citronella.

The MultiVet No Dog Bark Collar costs slightly less, but is better suited for smaller dogs. The collar is adjustable, though more able to carry the weight of the citronella pouch when it's set to a smaller size.

No one enjoys owning a yappy dog, so there is compelling motivation to train your beloved canine to keep the peace. However, there are both compassionate and ugly ways to accomplish this important task. Any pet owner can demonstrate a loving approach to training by using a collar that meets the goal without harming the animal.

Do you think some of the pet owners on the board go a little over board?

I notice the pet responses are overwhelmingly critical. One lady was asking what adult breed she should adopt (from a shelter) and she mentioned that 5 days a week she was out or 9 hours and almost everyone told her not to get a dog. Well.. does that mean any single person with a full time job shouldn't get a pet? And, even if we're not working aren't we all gone for gaps through out the day? Surely adoption and crate training is better than death.. or even adopting a house broken dog?

I think people here can be slightly judgemental about peoples pet care abilities. I think though lots of those people base their comments on a "perfect world" scenario. There is still a lot of useful information here, you just have to be a bit thick skinned about some of the responses.

Please consider the following reasons why most any pet owner, especially a dog owner should seriously consider making a dog crate part of the household. These are not listed in order of importance. You must decide which benefit is most important to you.

- A place of their own when visitors are present in the home—at this writing the holiday season is quickly approaching which means house guests. Many pets get nervous when company comes. Many owners get nervous for their pets when company visits. Many times the pets end up locked in another room or outside. A dog crate provides your pet with a safe place of their own to retreat into while visitors are present.

- Food and holidays go hand in hand. You know what you want your dog to eat and what foods are restricted. Your visitors will not know what your pet feeding rules are. If your pet is safely in their crate then no unwanted food will be given to your pet that could make them seriously ill or worse. If you have experienced that severe situation then you know what I am referring to.

-Vacation time—How great would it be to have your pet riding with you in the car, in his dog crate, safe, secure, resting out of harms way and just enjoying life as you enjoy the open road.

- Many people love camping and of course we always take our dogs along. Dog crates allow you to relax in the knowledge that your pet or pets are safe and secure in their dog crates when you are not exercising them or engaging is some other interaction directly with them. Your dogs know this crate to be their sleeping area, the same one they had at home, so they are comfortable in it. They will not wonder away. They will not get lost. You know exactly where they are.

- If you show your dogs you probably already know how great it is to have your dog resting in his or her dog crate while you are watching the show or talking to other exhibitors, a great example for the rest of us.

- If you have an older pet they want and require a place to rest that is safe and secure. If you have younger pets in the home this is often a problem for the older dog. Enter the dog crate, their own space, their bed, their safe place to rest away from the others that may want to jump and play instead of rest.

- Now I will say just a bit about puppies and dog crates. There is tons of information available on crate training your puppy so we will not go into that here except to say that crate training your puppy will change your life and theirs for the better.

- Unfortunately our pets occasionally require surgery for some reason. How great would it be to have a place where your crate trained dog could rest in safety while recuperating? That is just another very important use for your dog crate.

Pet crates and pet carriers are not punishment for your pet. Once you have successfully crate trained your pet they will enjoy their crate for the rest of their lives. Never use the crate for punishment. This is counter productive to your goals.

I am looking for a dog containment device that works like a 'wedlock' system. If the dog goes further than a preset distance from the emitter, he gets a correction. If he continues out of range he gets a light shock, etc.I work on farms near roads and take him with me. I don'tt want to have to keep him tied up as he really needs the run. My dog hates her crate!?

Whenever I put my seven weeks old dog in her portable kennel she starts going into a frenzy. She wants to get out, she's crying, she's screaming and she's panting like crazy! I just dont knwo what to do. She still isnt potty trained and somebody told me to put her in a crate. I got this kennel and I'm trying to keep her inside so she'd learn to go in or sleep in or anything! She peed in this kennel one time, I wiped away the pee and she never went inside again. Get her inside, using treats. Then, lock the door. Go away for 2 minutes, and ignore her. Then, while the door's still locked, giver her a treat. Go away for another minute, then let her out and play with her. Increase the time spent in the crate by 1 minute per day, and do it every day. Soon, she should go inside without treats.

I'm getting a Great Dane...tips anyone?

Yes I'm getting a Great Dane, and I read up on them as much as I could of course, but some facts on the internet cant answer all of my questions.
I'm getting a great dane puppy from the pound and its already 8 months old, does anybody have any tips on what kind of training I should start? Should I buy a crate for this GIANT bundle of fur or should I keep in a bathroom at night? Should he be socialized immediately? Should I go visit a breeder right away and see what kind of condition he is in or if he has any health issues? Or will a vet know all or more of this than a breeder? What kind of problems should I look for?
LOL really any information would be great.
One major question is how they eat. Do they really need to eat about 10 cups a day? I know that depends on the dog food, but my dog food (natural balance) says to feed a 100 pound dog 5 cups, but if its a puppy it says I should almost double that amount...does that sound right?
Any help would be great.

A crate would be a good idea..a good place to keep him when he can't be supervised and also a big help in housetraining.
Training should start immediately..find a good class and get him enrolled. Socialization should also start right away but be careful not to overwhelm him right off.
He needs a good vet exam..a breeder can tell you how he meets standard and superficila info but not over all health.
No they don't really need 10 cups of food a day..in over 25 years in Danes I've never had one eat that much nor should they. Feed a good quality food such as Canidae ALS, Wellness super5 Mix chicken, Innova, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul regular or large breed adult,California Natural..just ot name a few..stay away from store brands such as Pedigree, Purina, Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, etc.. do NOT feed your Dane puppy food of any kind not even large breed...he needs a good quality adult food of 24% protein or less.
I feed Canidae ALS to my Danes and they each eat 2 cups of dry mixed with 1/3 can wet am & pm and they do very well and are at a perfect weight...

I suggest that you join some of the Dane groups so that you can learn how ot properly care for and train your new companion.
