Gerbil Pet Insurance?

Now you can get dog and cot pet insurance, but can you get gerbil pet insurance? I have two female gerbils.
I have money for them should they need to go to the vet, but I'd rather not have that shock.
So is it possible to get pet insurance for a gerbil? (supermarkets don't do it, just cat and dog).

I wouldn't have thought that this was possible. Most companies wouldn't do small animal insurance as the premiums would be higher than just taking it to the vet off your own back. It's lovely that you care enough about them to think about it though. Doesn't sound daft at all!

What I would do is just save a little bit of money each month/week and keep it in a separate account from your usual spending account. That way, should the worst happen and they need emergency treatment or have to go to the vets, then you have some money stockpiled for that exact purpose.

Cat germs in house from filthy litter box?

OK, my fiance has one cat, and he doesn't clean her litter box very often (maybe once every week and a half) until it starts smelling awful. The cat also likes to sit/lie in her litter box a lot. Fiance lets her get on counters like in the kitchen and bathroom, and also on the bed. Does anyone else find this disgusting? I hate finding dirty cat prints and fur everywhere. He says I overreact about the germs. I know how filthy cats' mouths are. Does anyone else back me up? My dog doesn't sit in her own crap for hours and then roam all over the house . . . .
We've tried a self-cleaning litter box, but it still left a lot of clumps behind.

It's not healthy for that situation to continue. You and him both flush the loo when you are done, right? Would he like it if you simply stopped, closed off the water and let him with with the mess, unable to change it?
It concerns me that he isn't worried about proper hygeine or care of this animal. Take a good look at this because it's an indication of how well, or not, he would be looking after people around him too.
Maybe step up and tell him you'll take over the cat since even a vet will tell you that is bad ownership, and that he cannot care for or will not care for her properly, and start cleaning the box out daily. Sooner or later kitty will begin avoiding the litterbox, and that's very hard to retrain since cats are by nature very clean animals, they just cannot clean their own litterbox.

Before you ever bring a new cat or kitty into your home, make sure your dog knows 2 basic commands: "Stay" and "Leave It." You will be saying those words a lot over the first couple of weeks. So practice with your dog to make sure he knows them before you bring home your new cat.

Stay

Start by saying "sit" while your dog is at your side. Hold the leash in a straight line up from his head with no slack in the leash. Open your palm in front of your dog's nose and say "stay." Step out in front of him so you can block him from going forward. If he moves, snap the leash and repeat the command. If he stays, return to the position next to him. Tell him "Okay" and praise him. Keep practicing this until he stays every time.

Leave It

With your dog in a "Sit-Stay" position and your hand in a fist, with flat surface up, show your dog a biscuit with the other. As he reaches for it, say "Leave It" and pop him (not hard, but enough that he feels it) under the chin. Show the biscuit again, repeating the "Leave It" command. If he hesitates or turns away, then praise him. Doing this twice is usually all it takes for your dog to get it right every time.

You can now bring your new cat home (keeping him in a carrier for now) to your old dog. Put the cat carrier in a safe room, then bring your dog in on a leash. With the cat still in the carrier, let the two look at each other. Let your dog sniff, but if he gets too excited, use the "Leave It" command and praise him for minding you.

Take your dog out of the room, close the door, and then open the carrier door so the cat can come out when he's ready. Allow both animals to get used to each other's scent for a couple of weeks, then put a baby gate across the door to the safe room to keep the dog out. The cat should be able to choose how much interaction he wants with the dog.

Do not ever tolerate aggressive behavior from your dog. Just keep a leash on him until everything is settled down, and use the "Leave It" and "Stay" commands to keep him under control.

Some cats and dogs will always just tolerate each other, while others will become the best of companions. Just be patient as all of these things take time.

my dog luca and my cat willow have become best friends.

If your cat is pregnant, then you probably have some planning to do. Many pet owners do not intend for their cat to become pregnant. If your cat is going to have babies soon, then you should not only prepare for the new litter, but you should also give your cat special attention. A proper diet and nutrition is vital for a pregnant cat, just like it is for a pregnant human being.

The most important factor is that your cat needs extra calories. This does not mean that your kitty should overeat, but simply have more food than normal. More protein enriched foods and calcium should also be added. Not only will this help give your cat the vitamins that she needs for the after-birth, but it will also give her the extra energy to make it through until delivery.

Instead of buying the same food that you always give your cat, pick up a bag of kitten food. This does sound out of the ordinary, but the same food that your new kittens will soon be eating is an excellent food for your pregnant cat, the reason being because kitten food has more calcium, protein, and fat than normal adult cat food. All of the nutrition that your pregnant cat needs is wrapped up into one type of food.

You should also continue to feed your cat normal adult cat food while she is pregnant. A recommended brand is one such as Eukanuba. A good way to do this is to mix up the kitten food with the regular food. Instead of feeding your pregnant cat two large meals per day, feed her small frequent meals.

During the later stages of the pregnancy, she should be eating two times more than she ate before she became pregnant.

Many veterinarians will recommend a vitamin mineral supplement in order to help give the cat the extra calcium that her bones will need. Just as with a human pregnancy, the babies are taking all of her strength and calcium that she needs. In order to keep her healthy, it is up to you as her owner to add it back into her diet or blood stream. This will prevent future tooth decay or bone deterioration.

The total gestation period for a cat is nine weeks. The energy that your pregnant cat will need is reflected by the amount of weight that she gains. After your pregnant cat delivers her litter, her most important role will be nursing. You should pay attention to her changing needs throughout the process. She will need as much energy as possible in order to keep reproducing milk. The intake of water is very important in order to help her keep reproducing milk.

Around five weeks of age, the kittens will start to eat more solid food, and nurse from their mother less. At the same time, the mother will also start to eat less. Most kittens are weaned from the mother at eight weeks of birth, and by this time, the mother should have enough energy to go back to her usual pre-pregnancy food and diet.

That animal is still going to be English originally just like I am originally from France, but because it lives in America makes it American! I live in New Zealand but I don't call myself French, I'm a New Zealander.

And if the animal from America moved to say, Italy, I'd still consider that animal American, not Italian. Just like if I moved to Italy, I wouldn't make me Italian.

Honestly though people don't think about that sort of thing when it comes to animals too much. To most people, a dog is a dog and a cat is a cat. But it's an interesting question!

It is very important to spay or neuter your pet for many, mean reasons. Some may be obvious, but some not so obvious.

Some people might get a cat or dog - pure bred or mixed breed - and think about breeding their pet for money, or other reasons. Even when dog or cat breeding is done "correctly," it is very costly, time consuming and emotionally draining. Whether breeding is done on purpose or by accident, a very large percentage of pregnant female dogs/cats and their puppies/kittens end up at kill shelters or suffer terrible consequences on the streets. 9 to 10 million animals are killed in shelters every year due to irresponsible breeding and "accidental" breeding - people not spaying and neutering their pets. Whether you have a very expensive pure bred dog/cat or a mixed breed, there is never a reason to breed him or her.

If you are concerned with the cost of a spay or neuter, do not be. It is not that expensive to begin with, and the possible consequences of having an un-altered pet will be far more expensive than a simple spay or neuter surgery ever would. Certain areas in the United States actually offer free spay and neuter surgeries - so do some research to find out if you are in one of those lucky areas. There are also programs through rescue organizations that offer deeply discounted spays and neuters if there isn't a free option available in your area.

Another reason to spay or neuter your cat or dog is for good health reasons. Spaying and neutering greatly reduces your pet's risk of cancer as he or she gets older. There are cancer treatments for animals, but just like with humans they are not guaranteed, and they are very, very expensive. The risk of developing kidney and bladder infections is also reduced, as are uterine and pelvic infections for female pets. These are also not cheap to treat.

Dogs are less likely to stray from home if he or she is altered. When female dogs are in heat, they seek out male dogs. It is instinctive and if your female dog is to get loose, she will most likely be gone for days, if she returns at all. If she does come back, you will most certainly have a pregnant dog to deal with. Male dogs who aren't neutered tend to be more aggressive and temperamental - regardless of the breed or age.

Dogs that are altered are easier to house train. And who wouldn't want that? Neutered males are less likely to mark the furniture or anything else in the house and female dogs will not be leaving the "mess" from being in heat - smell included - all over your house for a minimum of 10 days, since she is spayed.

Lastly, and most importantly, you will help control the number of unwanted dogs and cats in the world who die every year in shelters, or by other means. An animal is euthanized every 3 seconds of every day. That is a sad, disturbing fact that stems from people not spaying or neutering their pets. By being responsible and altering your pet, you will be doing your part to end animal homelessness.

My son is a lively little 11 month old, that loves to chase our two cats around the house. ( He is still crawling, but very close to walking. ) When he finally catches them, he attempts to tackle them, but always ends up smacking his face into either the floor or walls..

my son does this, too - not after cats (they run from him), but to toys. i honestly don't think there is any way of stopping him. i haven't figured out a way to get my son to stop. my son has a big pooh bear that he likes to attach and climb on. sometimes pooh rolls and my son goes flying into the wall or rocking chair or table or anything else that's in the same room. when he's playing with pooh i just try to sit in the floor with him to keep pooh in the middle of the floor so that my son won't roll over and hit anything. as far as you son hitting the floor maybe you can just put a big blanket down? i really don't know. our floor is carpeted so he's only hit his face hard enough to cry a few times, but i do know that the wall hurts. good luck and i'll be watching for other answers because i kind of need the suggestions, too. i really don't want to take pooh from him.

if you mean get dogs and cats to get along and play you have to have them when the cat is a kitten and when the dog is a puppy then you have to raise them together so that they will learn to be with each other then the kitten and the puppy will learn to be together like Brother and sister. =] thats the only way I know! lol! get them when they are young!

A cat's willfulness coupled with its agility means that it is tricky for many owners to establish areas that are out of bounds to their feline companions. This can cause problems, especially in the kitchen where hygiene and safety issues arise.

Obviously, it is unrealistic to expect to be able to train a cat as you would a dog. However, there are ways to tackle an unwanted behavior. Below are eight tips to help keep your cat away from kitchen surfaces.

1. Before embarking on an attempt to restrict your cat's movements, it is important to ensure that he, or she, has plenty of roaming space. This is crucial, especially for an indoor cat, because cats can make mischief due to boredom and frustration. When considering the space that your cat has to play, it is wise to consider the amount of vertical freedom too, as cats require an opportunity to jump and climb. It may be wise to consider purchasing a cat shelf, gymnasium or a cat tree.

2. Typically, discipline is not an effective method of training cats. As already mentioned, a cat's aim is not to please its owner. This, coupled with the fact that you are trying to discourage, rather than encourage, a behavior, means that you need to employ 'negative reinforcement' techniques. In other words, if a cat associates a behavior (that you are trying to discourage) with an unpleasant consequence, then he, or she, will be far less likely to repeat this action.

3. There are several things to bear in mind before selecting a method of negative reinforcement. Firstly, it is a good idea to ensure that your cat does not associate the unpleasant consequence with a human. A fundamental part of these training techniques is that the cat directly links its actions and the negative response.

4. Always try to keep the training as consistent as possible. Therefore, if someone else is caring for your cat, ensure that they understand how and when to use your chosen technique. Similarly, it is important not to overstress your cat. Some cats are particularly highly strung and can become stressed easily. Observe your cat's reaction and gauge the severity of negative reinforcement that is required.

5. Many owners choose to use a water squirter to train their cat. Some people feel that this is cruel, but the effectiveness of this method and its necessity should be decided upon by individual owners. If you do choose to use water, never spray your cat directly in the face. Simply, spray the cat with a little water every time it jumps on a counter. Ideally, it should be done in such a way that the cat does not associate the water with you, but this is easier said than done.

6. Alternatively, some owners choose to use a noise, such as a can filled with coins. Again, when the cat performs the behavior you wish to eliminate, shake the can. The noise should startle your cat causing him, or her, to cease the behavior.

7. Unfortunately, these methods of training require an owner to be alert at all times. However, it is wise to bear in mind that if the negative reinforcement is consistent, it will not take long for your cat to learn.

8. Most importantly, it is a good idea for owners to monitor a cat's reaction to either the loud noise or the water squirter, because, as mentioned before, some cats can be easily stressed. If these techniques are causing your cat disproportionate anxiety, then the exercise should be abandoned.

Remember, cats cannot be obedience trained like a dog. Therefore, owners need to be creative and patient in their attempts at training a cat. Moreover, a cat owner should ensure that their feline friend has ample stimulation and opportunity for exercise, as this simple step can quickly eliminate behavioral problems.

The yellow jackets are growing in numbers. Have you noticed that?

Look around any grassy area and you'll see them. Buzzing about gathering nectar from the flower blossoms, and flying that nectar back to the hive. You'll find the hive (if you take time to study it) is noisy with activity, with the worker bees building new chambers to house new babies.

Approaching the midway point of summer you'll notice more yellow jackets flying around your yard, and that's only a small part of the number of bees that occupy each nest. Most of them stay at the hive building, growing, and serving the queen. As summer progresses their numbers will grow until you'll find difficulty walking through grass without stepping on one.

Unless you do step on one, and do so while barefooted, yellow jackets rarely cause you any trouble. That depends a lot on where they build their hive though. If they build in a location where you hold your outdoor events, or in some heavily trafficked spot, they become a problem for us humans.

As a pest control technician I once received a call about yellow jackets at an elementary school that I treated on a monthly basis. My contract with the school covered the buildings, and courtyards.

I thought they'd found a hive in one of their courtyards because I knew one courtyard in particular often had bee and hornet problems, but when I arrived at the school and talked with my maintenance contact I learned their situation this time was in a grassy field on the school property. They used the field as a parking lot for overflow, events, and as a play area during school hours.

Seems the yellow jackets attacked a group of kids on recess while they played tag in the field. 23 children were stung that day.

My contact told me the area where the incident occurred, and after walking around that vicinity a few minutes I located the hive. It was underground, and next to some bushes. I squirted some dust into the hole (the entrance to the hive), and jumped back fast to avoid the erupting cloud of bees that always happens when you treat a bee's nest in the ground. They come bubbling out like a horde of mongrels attacking whatever it was that disturbed them.

Be sure to remember that if you treat any bee, hornet, or wasp nest. More than once bees stung me multiple times because I lingered too long after applying chemicals to hives.

I watched the cloud for a few moments checking that my application was enough to do the job, and then I decided to walk around the field, looking for other hives. I found two more that visit, and one of those was right next to the rear tire of a parked car.

The field wasn't included in my contract. Treating those hives was a courtesy, but after that event I made a point of driving out to the field during my scheduled visits, and have a look around, making sure bees didn't start building new hives in the children's play area.

If you spot bees entering and leaving one particular place, you probably see the entrance to a hive. If that hive is very close to one of your activity areas, I suggest you take steps to eradicate it before you, or your guests, get stung.

Can cats use dog flea collars?

I was just recently given some dog flea collars and I was wondering if my cats could use them? I have no clue if it would be harmful at all. Thanks.

Underneath the fur of your pet feline are fleas, tiny parasites that suck their blood. Most cats found at home are the hosts of these cat fleas although they are also seen to infect other animals like rabbits and dogs. Fleas are a common occurrence in a dog’s or cat’s body although in very few amounts. Make sure that it does not develop into Flea Allergy Dermatitis which is a precursor of more serious problems with regards to the skin. An increase in the number of fleas however may lead to a severe loss of blood, causing the host to be anemic. Fleas are also notorious for being carriers for several other parasites such as tapeworm and other organisms.

What are the signs to check if your pet cat has a flea infection? First and most obvious sign is frequent biting and scratching of their fur as if something is irritating them. Since cats normally scratch their fur, it is also vital that you actually take a closer look at your cat’s skin to check for the presence of dark brown crawling insects. It would be quite hard to see if your cat has dark fur so it is also suggested to inspect their beddings as well.

Whenever cats are scratching their fur, these pesky fleas fall off. Another way of checking of the presence of these blood sucking-insects is to rub the fur lightly while they are standing on a big sheet of white paper. Apply a demister afterwards. The presence of dark brown marks with red stains on the paper is a positive indicator of the existence of fleas on your feline.

Removing the fleas from your cat is not quite easy to do since they are found to react quite sensitively to chemicals. There are some products available on the market to help eradicate this problem and leave you feline flea free.

A flea collar is the most common form of a cat flea removal product. Poison is found on these collars in enough quantities to kill those adult fleas on and in the vicinity of the neck and head region. However, the fleas existing on the lower part of the body are not affected.

Another product is the flea shampoo that contains chemicals that can exterminate the fleas. Extreme care must be used to avoid irritating the skin of the cat and causing them much discomfort.

A chemical free technique to get rid of these cat fleas, especially the adult ones is by using a flea comb. Be prepared with a bowl of water with a bit of detergent mixed into it to put the gathered fleas in to drown. Putting a dollop of petroleum jelly on the flea comb can help catch the fleas by letting them stick on the comb easily.

Flea powders may also be utilized but not frequently to avoid drying and irritating the fur and skin of your pet feline.

Oral medicines may be mixed with their food which will be taken up into the blood. When the fleas feed on the blood, it will act by preventing the maturation of their eggs. This method is best used in combination with another method that effectively kills the adult cat flea.

Application of topical creams and ointments may also be effective, depending on brand and the degree of flea infestation. It is usually applied once every month until the cat is free of fleas.

For a successful management of these cat fleas, the area where the cat usually stays is treated as well. These fleas frequently hide in carpets, curtains, beds, and anywhere conducive to its existence. For a total eradication of these cat fleas, it is a highly suggested to have the whole house cleaned and treated from top to bottom, indoors and outdoors. Other pets are also included in the flea free program.

Lastly, it is always recommended to consult with your neighborhood veterinarian first before using any flea removing product to make sure that both you and your feline is safe and on his way to becoming flea free.
