How can I stop my 9 year old dog from peeing and pooing in the house?

This is a totally new behaviour? She has been a very well behaved and toilet trained dog all her adult life. We recently have had someone new move into the house which could be a stress indicator however even with this person away she is still peeing. She has also started barking at night, again a new behaviour.

don't listen to that danni babe twat shes talking out her ass. you NEVER rub a dogs nose in its own mess as this causes the dog to be scared and worried of you and will more likely make matters worse. if you have been to the vets to check her for health problems and they have said she is fine then it could well be the new person who has moved in she may think that she wont get as much attention as she did before the new person came to live with you make sure you give her lots of fuss and get the new person to do the same then she might not see them as so much of a threat. i would recommend giving your dog anything that a vet has not prescribed if in doubt have a chat with your vet im sure hes heard of this sort of behaviour before and he can advise you on the best thing to do.... good luck

A Humane Choice - Citronella

Probably the most humane bark collar is the citronella spray model. Basically, each time the dog barks above a certain decibel level, the collar emits a light mist of citronella, which is an irritating scent for canines. The experience is somewhat unpleasant, but not painful or unnecessarily cruel. Eventually, the dog will connect its barking to the citronella scent.

Where to Find Citronella Collars

There are two major and popular brands for citronella dog collars - these are the Premiere Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Collar and the MultiVet No Bark Spray Collar.

The Premiere Gentle Spray Collar is significantly more expensive than other brands and usually costs between $70 and $80. However, online specials can often be found for as low as $30 to $40. Refills for this product typically cost less than $5, but it comes with a full-sized can of citronella.

And in what way do you mean 'harm'?

Depending on your skill of timing, or the reliability of the collar timing, you could seriously scare your dog, and she could connect that scare with what she was seeing or doing at the time...so you could be punishing good behavior, and missing the 'bad' behaviour, through poor timing. So ANY of the could 'harm' her mentally.

As for type, you get ones triggered by the vibration in her voacl cords as she barks, and others that you control with a remote control. Some emit ultrasonic 'squeals', some spray water, some vibrate, some spray mustard or citroenella, some give them electric shocks. ALL have the potential to malfunction, causing more confusion/fear/aggression than you were trying to counter in the first place! lol

There is NO substitute to getting to the bottiom of WHY your dog barks. What is her/his motivation? What is his/her reward for barking (Like, does the postman retreat? Great, reward! Or, do you call her/him to be quiet, thus giving the attention (s)he craves? Great, reward!). You need to think like your dog, and work out the motivation behind the barking, and what action the barking acheives. You need to address these things, and give the dog an alternative way of dealing with these things. Without knowing your specific dog, I can't really say what alternatives may suit, but it isn't usually too difficult to work out.

Also, on the whole, a dog with an active life is less inclined to be a nuisence barker. If they have plenty exersice for their body, and stimulation for the brain, they feel much less need to seek 'amusement' through barking.

Of course, it must be remembered that it is totally normal for dogs to bark at certain times, and it is us humans who have a problem with it! Barking dogs are simply being dogs. It's up to us to help them use up their energy via pursuits that we find more convenient than barking.

Most dog behavior dilemmas may only put an impact on the dog owner itself. However, there times when some canine behavior problems can also affect the other people in the neighborhood. What methods are good for bark control (besides shock collars)

I've got a miniature dachshund that barks at the wind!!! He barks at EVERYTHING and it's getting a little out of control. I tried the shock collar but the wife thinks it's a little to humane. my dog feels very uncomfortable with shock collar?

i have 16 month old male husky mix dog, and i decided to put a shock collar on him because he was utterly restless and showed very high levels of energy. Often he would run and jump around a lot in the house for no reason. When i walked him, his pace was way more faster than mine and i had to pull leash a lot.

You have a very high energy dog. It is not kind to force an animal to bottle up all of their energy. The shock collar is not to be used as a replacement for appropriate exercise. This dog needs to run! If he gets along with other dogs take him to a dog park. Take him to some area that is securely fenced and let him run like a mad dog multiple times weekly. Make doggie friends in the neighborhood... set up play dates in someone's fenced yard.
If he doesn't get along with other dogs then take him some place he can run alone. Buy either a long training line, or use durable rope to make him a running lead that is about 50 feet long. Exercising this dog will be the best thing you can do for him. You also really should get this dog into training. The number one reason dogs are turned over to shelters is because of behavior problems. The best way to avoid behavior problems is to have a well trained and well socialized dog. Good luck!

Bark Dog Collar
do you have experience with Petsafe deluxe little dog bark collar?

I bough this collar from Petco about a week ago and it worked maybe three times..
I've been contacting Petsafe for help, but they are not helping much at all.
First the collar was terrible, so I cut it off and attached fabric one, which fits my dog so much better and is the right fit for the position of the collar for proper contact. However, it still doesn't shock when she barks.

In my experience any type of bark collar is a waste of money as they don't work.
I don't really agree with the shock ones but they tend to work buy emitting a warning sound first that the dog will here but you won't and then it will shock if the barking continues.
You have to make sure the contact area is shaved so it hasd a good contact.
I agree a bottle of water or a tin can full of stones works much better than any collar.

I cannot think of a more annoying sound that a dog barking for no reason, one that goes on and on and on until you think you could yell out loud. Well, there are various types of bark collar that can bring about a humane cure for this problem.

One is called a shock collar - having said this don't imagine you are half way to electrocuting your dog. The collar will recognize vibrations in the dogs throat indicating that it is barking then it will just administer a slight shock. The strength of the shock can equate to when you touch certain things and you get that tingling sensation, it is no more than that.

Eventually though your dog will learn to associate his barking with getting this feeling in his neck which, because it is something he has never had before, he won't like and he is going to learn to not bark so that he won't get that feeling in his neck again. If you don't like the idea of your dog getting a shock and really believe that it is cruel you could always opt for the Citronella collar.

This collar has little vial of Citronella liquid and when the collar recognizes that the dog is barking it releases a mist of Citronella in front of the dogs nose. Dogs do not like this citric odor so eventually he will learn that if he doesn't bark he won't get this nasty smell underneath his nose.

Perhaps you would prefer a sonic bark collar to either of the above. This one, again after it recognizes bark vibrations in the dogs throat, emits a sonic tone which only the dog can hear.

Each time the dog barks the sound increases in strength and it will go on increasing as long as the dog barks. After the dog has barked more than 15 times in one minute the collar will rest for a while to give the dog a break in the training process, then begin all over again - that is if the dog is still barking.

I honestly cannot say what effect this sonic sound will have on any other pets you have in the house because they obviously will hear it. It would be a shame to punish them for something they aren't doing. Also there is the question of the dog you are trying to train being deaf. I cannot see this sonic collar working on a deaf dog. Barking dogs are not just an annoyance to the owner, you have to consider living next door to all this noise.

Disputes both verbal and legal have been the result of a dog being left to bark unchecked. Perhaps you work and the dog is left unattended during the day, you really do need to know that it is not creating a nuisance which will cause you problems.
