How do I help my two year old to transition from his cot to a big bed?
My son has just turned two. I have set up a big bed in his room with his cot alongside. He is interested in it and jumps up on the bed to play there but I don't know how to make the move - do I just put him straight in there and hope for the best? He is not used to blankets either as he has been in sleeping bags since 3 months old. Any suggestions please?
this method takes a bit of a time and effort but it rerally worked for my daughter and i.
with my daughter i put her cot matress on the floor of her room for a month for her to sleep on. she only ever rolled of once, its not that big of a fall so it didnt hurt her.
i then introduced the "big bed" into her room after two weeks and put a few teddies on the bed and made it up with a doona and pillows like it would look when she would be sleeping in it.
then after the month i started putting her in the big bed once a week and took her cot matress out of the room so she couldnt get out and sleep on that.
then increased the time i put her in the big bed every two weeks. she seemed to be fine with this and coped well with the very very slow transition.
also if he likes the sleeping bag keep him in it. and put a light blanket over the top of him.
Cotbeds have so many benefits that we see them as a clear winner when it comes to choosing your baby's sleeping arrangements. As well as keeping your baby supremely safe, cotbeds also help to ease that important transition from cot to bed. The conversion to a bed is achieved by simply removing the side panels of the cot so the disruption to your child is minimal. On top of this you will save money, space and be environmentally friendly.
Longer Lasting and Money Saving
* One purchase in first 5-6 years: You do not need to purchase a separate moses basket, cot, or toddler bed as cotbeds can fulfill all of these functions.
* Different bedding is not required: A different mattress or bedding is not required when the switch is made from a cot to a bed.
* Longer Lasting: As your cot and toddler bed are rolled into one your cotbed should last until at least the time that your child starts school.
* Kinder to the environment: The requirement for less furniture means less discarded furniture.
Designed to be Safe
* Different Mattress Base Positions: Newborns can start in the higher position and when they start to push up on their hands and knees you can lower the mattress position for additional safety.
* Teething Safety Rails: These can be found on the majority of cotbeds. They act to protect a baby's teeth and also help to prevent any damage to the cot.
* No Dangerous Cut Outs: Cotbeds do not have dangerous cut outs in the head or foot boards as these have proven to be dangerous for babies and toddlers.
* Slats Spacing: The slats in good quality cotbeds will not be more than 2 3/8 inches apart. This is an important safety feature to ensure that your baby does not get stuck.
Functional and Practical
* Easy Assembly: A good cotbed should not pose a problem even if you are DIY challenged.
* Drop-sides Available: A number of cotbeds come with easy to operate drop-sides for easy access to your baby. Most drop-sides have a one-handed operation and are recommended if you have a bad back or may encounter problems reaching in and out of the cot.
* Easy Conversion to Toddler Bed: This is generally as simple as removing the sides. Some cotbeds feature split ends to reduce the size of the end boards whilst others provide additional foot or head boards.
* Less Floor Space is required: Cotbeds are considerably smaller than adult sized beds meaning that you can free up valuable floor space for much longer.
Logical, Functional and Practical, Cotbeds are the Obvious Choice.
* It is important to note that the advice from fsid is that the safest place for your baby to sleep for their first six months is either in a crib or a cot in the same room as you. If it is not possible or practical to have a cotbed in your bedroom, or to always be with your baby whilst they are asleep in a cotbed then we would advise that you also get a moses basket or crib for these first few months.
