I just started clicker training. How do I know if my dog knows what the click means?

I don't know of any way to tell if my 6 year old pug Dudley knows what the click of the clicker means. Is there any way to tell? Also, I'd like some tips to help me get started with clicker training.

You will know that he clicker is "charged" when you click and your dog turns around and looks at you or perks his ears and shows interest.

It can take a couple of days to "charge" the clicker. As said beore - get a bag of treats, and simply click and treat - several times a day.

The treats should be very small as he is a small dog and you don't want him to fill up on treats. You can also use his dinnertime for charging the clicker. Hold the bowl and give him a kibble after each click.

The best way to learn the method is to go to a class. They can help you with the right methods and timing. The treat must come within a couple of seconds after the click.

One of the most well-known forms of training dogs for proper behavior and obedience is the leash and collar training. In fact, this practice has been going around for years and is almost considered traditional by trainers and owners alike.

Generally speaking, it is best to train puppies more than the adult dogs as they already have a background of experiences and established foundation of behavior, along side it are the disagreeable dog behavior problems. However, it is not true that you can't teach old dog new tricks. However, trainable adults dog may seem, training them would considerably take much time, not to mention the effort one must exert to achieve satisfactory results

At any rate, a trainer must never use harsh forms of dog training equipment. Take for example the choke chain. This chain is neither for beginners nor recommended at all. However, an experienced trainer can use it but with the highest degree of care observance. Studies show that extensive neck and trachea injuries have been related with the use of this type of dog training equipment. It does precisely what its name says, it truly chokes and if your puppy is a puller, it will choke constantly.

There are other forms of gentler dog training equipment in the forms of collar. These are the Prong collar, the Halti, the le Leader and the Electronic Collar.

To start with your puppy's leash and collar training fasten a lightweight leash on your puppies' neck and just allow him go around the house to play and walk around. He might pull on it for quite sometime but the idea for now is just to let him get comfortable with the idea. Also, it is important to associate your dog's name with something positive. Again, this may be in form of a reward or a treat. I have had the "invisible" type of fence for over 10 years now.

The "invisible" type of fence is not cruel like some people on this site will tell you. The shock that it gives is mild (and yes, I have been shocked by it). The shock value is immeasurable. The better type of fence systems collars also give a warning beep when the dog gets near the perimeter well before delivering a shock. With proper training the dog will learn quickly where it can and cannot go. Hence it won't get a shock. Most of the people who will tell you that they don't work are ignorant about the fences in the first place or they bought one (maybe a junk one like PetSafe and many others), slapped the collar on the dog and then booted him out the door without training him. And sometimes they are just plain stupid, and you can't fix stupid.

Sometimes a conventional fence is not an option either due to the cost of fencing a large piece of property or because some housing developments have restrictions on fences.

Sometimes a conventional fence will not contain your dog at all. He can go over it or under it.

If you are looking for an Invisible Fence brand fence you will have to contact a local dealer for a price to install it though I can almost guarantee it will be over $1000.00. If you wish to install it yourself (and it's pretty easy to do in 2 - 3 hours depending on the size of your property) it is available online (but not I/F brand).

The "invisible" type of fence consists of three things. First is the wire which is buried an inch or two into the ground. This wire defines the outer perimeter of the containment area. You can also block off areas (flowerbeds, pools etc) within the containment area. Some experimentation may be necessary in this. Second is the transmitter that is mounted to the wall indoors and connected to the fence wire, and third is the collar that the dog wears. The transmitter sends out an AM radio band signal that the collar will sense if your pet gets to close to the electronic field. The collar will then deliver a correction. Some of the better ones will give a warning beep prior to delivering a shock. Though it is a strong shock it will not harm the pet in any way. Small marker flags are placed along the inner edge of the field about 5 to 10 feet apart during the training period and removed (every other one) as the pet gets used to the fence.

Huskies are escape artists. We have 16 of them. The only thing that I have found that they can't go over or under is invisible type fencing. Some folks say that it doesn't work on Huskies. They don't know what they are talking about. You can't buy the cheap stuff, like what they sell at Lowe's or Home Depot or PetSmart etc. The best I have found is the Smart Dog 2100 by Innotek. You can find it on line at several sites, discounted for less than $170.00 with 1 collar. Extra collars are about $80.00. The kit has everything needed including 500' of wire and flags, enough to do a quarter acre. Expansion kits (500' of wire and flags) are available for $38.00 and will contain a bit more than an acre. The collars are rechargeable (unlike the "Invisible Fence" and most others where you have to buy the proprietary (one place to get it = expensive) batteries every 3 or so months), has battery backup for the transmitter, run through prevention, waterproof, etc. if you are in an area that has a lot of thunderstorms I would consider a lighting protection module ($50.00). Innotek now owns Invisible Fence brand. Be sure to use heat shrink type crimp on butt connectors on the wire if needed. They are available at marine supply stores. Do not use the "weatherproof wire nuts" from Lowe's etc. They will not work for long in this application. Use an edger to dig the "trench" for the wire. The wire only has to be buried 1 or 2 inches down. The yard will “heal” within a few days normally. Crossing driveways can be done two ways, wash a tunnel underneath with a garden hose or use a Skilsaw with a concrete blade to cut a groove an inch or so deep, put the wire in and seal it with a concrete sealer. For a gravel driveway, dig a trench an inch or so wide and a a bout 3 or 4 inches deep, lay an old piece of garden hose in the trench and put the wire through. This will protect the wire from the gravel cutting it when run over by a car.

The key is taking the time to train your pet. I have known of people to pay big money to install a fence, strap the collar on their dog and then complain that the fence is junk when the dog blows right through it. Longhaired breeds require a longer contact probe on the collar (these are included with the system above). Training may take awhile, one of ours took 18 months (she was a bit stubborn) before we trusted her, most were pretty good in a month or so and we have one that it only took 3 days! The amazing thing is that we can take the collar off, put them on a leash and when we head towards the perimeter their brakes come on immediately! You can also block off areas of the yard that you don't want them in. When hurricane Isabelle came through we had no power for 3 weeks, the terrain was changed with all the fallen trees, and the underground wire for the fence was damaged and NONE of the kids even tried the fence. As I said earlier, the people who say that it doesn't work don't know what they are talking about. We have 16 Huskies (17 until we lost one over the summer due to medical reasons), all free to run around, contained in our 6 acre yard. And no I am not a dealer ..... just a satisfied customer with 16 hardheaded Huskies most of them rescued as adults. We can leave them outside unsupervised for hours with no problems. However, we do not leave them outside when we leave the house.

It will not keep other animals out including the neighbor’s brats. Neither will a 6 foot stockade fence ... this I learned when I lived elsewhere and was attacked by a neighbors dog in my backyard. As far as people being scared of dogs, well if a 15 to 20 foot barrier field isn't enough, neither would a chain link fence be. Besides, if the pet stays on your property who cares if they are unreasonably scared. As far as a dog running through ... well yes, that could happen, however, with proper training it is unlikely. Huskies have an extremely high prey drive. Where we live we have a lot of wildlife, large and small. The kids will line up along the edge of the field and watch the rabbits, geese, deer etc. They won't challenge the fence. The deer and geese have learned where the kids can and cannot go and will stay just outside "Husky country". Sometimes within 5 feet of the kids. As I said it does work. The key is training. That is the most important part of the installation of the fence.

Some people advocate the “wireless” type of fence. You have little control over the coverage area. The other problem with them is "dead" areas caused by obstructions to the signal by things in your walls, trees and even a parked car. Your dog WILL find these areas.

Others advocate tying a pet out “because “invisible” fences are so cruel!” Or “why do you want to electrocute your dog?”, however, think about what could your pet do if attacked by another animal while tied? Where is he going to go to get away? At least with an “invisible” fence or a conventional fence he has a decent chance of evading an attacker or fighting back.

Please note though ..... you MUST not leave your dog out 24/7 with the collar on. You MUST bring him in at night and remove the collar. If you do not remove the collar he WILL most likely develop sores were the probes contact the skin which can become infected quickly opening a whole new can of worms.

What type of training collar for my dog?

I have a one year old lab/chow male and we have been looking into getting an affordable training collar,because of his excessive barking and to be able to take him off his long lead in our unfenced yard, i prefer a tone or vibrate collar, im not so into a shock collar. there are soo many kinds out there, any suggestions? Anything under $100
why im asking is because when i go to my dads for 6 days a month i bring my dog and he lives off a lake where you cant have fences and the lead is 120 feet thats not cruel he has plenty of area to run.

No need for one - exercise your dog, provide proper mental stimulation, and train it.... bring it inside when it doesn't need to be out.... then it won't bark. If you want your dog to have full run of the yard then put up an actual fence.

You will NOT find any quality training collars for "cheap." PERIOD. If you want quality collars that work, you'll have to fork out the money for it - "cheap" collars will be unreliable, weak, and/or dangerous to the dog.

Tone/vibrate/spray collars may help with barking but they will NOT keep the dog in the yard. A dog can easily ignore tone/vibration or spray to get at whatever they want on the other side - plus how would you define the boundaries in a way the dog would understand? You wouldn't.

Look into proper obedience training and continue to use the tie out - my dog lived for two years with only the tie out (she was an inside dog, her "outdoor" exercise other than walks where games of fetch on her tie out.) Now we have a fence. For me, there are not other options that are safe/reliable.

Will a dog whistle or ultrasonic bark controller (the non-collar type) work through apartment walls?

My neighbor will not keep her dogs from barking at early morning hours for hours straight and I am losing sleep over it since I can hear the dogs very clearly through the walls of our apartments and she will not put them outside. I would not like to call someone like the police just yet and hope something I can do myself will solve the problem. I have seen dog whistles and those indoor/outdoor ultrasonic devises that go off when they pick up a dog barking or manually. Would either of these work through the walls of an apartment? Are walls are thin enough that when the dogs are barking, it sounds like they are in my apartment, but I also want something that is quite to humans, so she has no idea that I am doing this.

I had the same problem with the dog downstairs. I tried a dog whistle, and the bark controller and neither of them worked. I even tried putting it right outside of the door to their apartment that's in my foyer and it still didn't pick up his barking. I tried it on my dog just to see if it was defective- it wasn't, but the bark controller didn't go off unless it was less than 2 feet from the dog. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably going to have to address the issue with your landlord.

Types of Dog Training Courses

In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker, which oddly enough makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances. Went to the physiotherapist last year for a tendon strain in my knee. She used this device i described above. She refused to give me the name for it. Does any one know what it is?

There are several electrical modalities used in physical therapy and they each have a unique purpose. The most frequently used devices are:
1. TENS: transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation. Sends electrical impluses that either work on the gate mechanism or induce endorphine release, depending on the mode. Primarily used in the treatment of pain.
2. IFC: interferential current...two currents that cross each other to create an electric field to decrease pain, increase circulation, etc.
3. HVPC: high volt pulsed current: a current used to induce small muscle contractions to stimulate flushing of noxious chemicals
4. EMS or NMES: electronic muscle stimulation...electical impluses sent to the muscular junction to induce contraction for purposes of strengthening.
5. Iontophoresis: a direct current used in conjunction with medication to "push" the medication through the skin.

There are others, but these are probably the most frequently used. What you should know, however, is that none of these devices "heal" you...most of them are temporary fixes and meant to decrease the effects of pain...but do not remove the cause. Furthermore, the use of these devices is being highly scrutinized as more and more evidence is mounting that the effects of these devices (in most cases) does not speed up the healing process...it just makes it a little more comforable.

There can be many instances where the need for a dog-training collar is warranted. When used the right way, shock collars and spray collars can be very effective for dog training purposes. There is nothing inhumane or mean about using these types of dog training collars.

A shock collar is a dog collar that is electronic, and sends a mild shock sensation to your dog when you press a button on the receiver. Most collars allow you to adjust the level of sensation. You need to set the level of the shock in correlation with the size of your dog. There are also dog-training collars that have a button on the receiver that will allow the collar to emit a sound only when the button is pressed. After your dog is used to the collar, this can be a very effective way to train your dog without having to use an actual shock.

The idea behind collar training is simple. When your dog behaves in a way that is unacceptable, you press a button that send a gentle shock to your dog, which tells the dog that the behavior needs to be stopped. They will soon figure out that they are being disciplined for wrongdoing, and cease the undesired behavior. When they discern a pattern, i.e. they continue to get shocked because they are repeating the same behavior; they stop the behavior that causes them discomfort. This makes a dog-training collar highly effective.

There is a plethora of behavior issues that the use of a dog-training collar can be helpful in dissuading. Some of these things are jumping up on people, chewing on household items, barking incessantly, digging huge holes in the yard, and many other things.

Be sure that you have your transmitter with you all the times, so that you can stop bad behavior right away. You should always begin at the very lowest setting, and only raise the level of shock on the dog-training collar if the dog is unresponsive. If the collar setting is too high, then the dog could panic, and this is not what you are trying to do.

Training collars that use a type of spray, usually citronella, work on much the same principle as shock collars, although people that want to stop their dog from barking unnecessarily primarily use them. When the dog barks, the collar sends a spray of citronella, which the dog finds annoying, and eventually they learn to stop the behavior that is causing them to become sprayed. It is totally harmless to the animal, and only aggravates them, making them cease the bad behavior to avoid the spray.

Dog training with the use of dog training collars is a very simple and effective way to curb bad behavior in your dog. It is a safe and harmless way to discipline you dog, so that you can have a more safe and healthy relationship with your pet. When your dog behaves well, you can spend more time giving your dog the love and attention they need, and less time trying to stop undesirable acts. Dog training collars allow your dog to have the discipline it needs, and allow you to be able to relax, knowing that your dog is well behaved.

Checked out silent dog whistles at Petco & PetSmart and they had bad reviews. Anyone know of a brand that actually works...My new neighbors have 3 dogs, and every time my 2 dogs go in our backyard, ALL the dogs start barking and my dogs won't take the que from me to shut up. I thought a dog whistle could train them to come to me and be quite. I tried an ultrasonic dog silencer, but it doesn't work. Any ideas?? Thanks!

There are a good number of reasons why you should train your dog of which the following include some of the more obvious :

1. Housetraining: Unless you are partial to the aroma of dog poop and pee then it would certainly make sense to, at the very least, have your dog housetrained. Yup! There's no way round it, but that cute bundle of fur otherwise known as a puppy, unless taught to the contrary will quickly and happily turn your pristine house not only into his playground but also into his personal toilet. And make no mistake, this is not a problem that is going to disappear with age; any dog that is not housetrained be it a puppy or adult will soil your residence until it is taught not to!

2. Socializing: An unsocialized dog is generally an unhappy dog because such an animal finds it extremely difficult to interact comfortably with strangers or other dogs (and animals). This type of dog is characteristically nervous and highly-strung, which condition manifest as a dog with a hair-trigger response to aggression at the slightest perceived provocation (usually more imaginary than real) or a dog that slinks around in a constant state of fear. It matters little which errant behavior is displayed, the fact is either existence will be detrimental to the dog's well-being.

3. Bonding: A well trained dog is a happy dog. When you and your dog understand one another well your relationship is going to be that much richer for it.The only way to achieve that level of harmony in your relationship with your dog is if you both work at understanding one another; and that will only be achieved through proper training. Besides dog training should be fun for you and your pooch, especially since it challenges and stimulates your dog's mind. As frequently happens with human adolescents, a bored dog is going to be driven to destructive behavior; this is especially true in the smarter breed of dog.

Types of Dog Training

These days there are quite a number of different dog training techniques, enough to accommodate everybody dog owner out there. Some are very popular and come highly recommended whilst others seem to be a throwback to a more primitive time and age when we didn't understand man's best friend as we do now. The following lists some of the more commonly used methods of dog training:

1. Reward Training

Currently a big favorite in dog training circles, this technique employs the use of treats to reinforce good and desired behavior patterns executed by your dog. When used correctly this is a pretty effective training technique but its downside is that it is fairly easy to abuse the system and thus nullify its effectiveness by giving your dog treats at times other than during dog training sessions.

2. Clicker Training

Clicker training is a classic Pavlovian technique that utilizes conditional training through sensory association. As the name suggests the clicker, which is a plastic box with an inbuilt metal strip that makes the actual clicking sound, is used in conjunction with a treat or something your dog finds highly desirable to reinforce and encourage a particular behavior. In time the treat reward is removed yet the dog still associates a given behavior with the sound of the clicker and thus performs that behavior in the absence of the treat.

3. Whistle Training

Dogs have far better hearing than people and can hear frequencies that our ears cannot pick up. It is on the basis of this premise that the ultrasonic whistle functions which means that since you cannot hear it but your dog can (supposedly) it can be a little tricky getting to grips with its use.

4. Dog Whispering

Yeah sounds a bit corny doesn't it and most likely the name of this method is an obvious offshoot reference from the 1998 Robert Redford movie (starring amongst others a young Scarlett Johansson) titled the Horse Whisperer themed around a man who had an uncanny ability to communicate with horses. Anyway these days Dog Whispering is now a broadly accepted term and its training technique is based on understanding a dog' body language and the many unvocalized signals that are part and parcel of dog communication.

These four examples above are just a few of the dog training methods available and in fact there are a whole slew of collar based  training methods that have not been listed here partly because some of them are archaic and barbaric such as electric collar training or prong collars.

In summary, this article barely touches the tip of the iceberg as far as dog training is concerned but the thing to remember is that utilizing dog training in the everyday life of your pooch will greatly enrich the relationship the two of you share.

Electric shock only when I touch people?

Anyone else have this? I do it quite often but not with everyone. Ive researched some ppl are charged more and when a positive charged person touches a negative charged person it levels you out.
But thing is I dont get shocks from objects...Only people.
And they ask me, why do you always shock me so I know it doesnt happen with them & others often.
Kinda weird? Anyone else the same?

Should electric shock dog collars be banned? I say yes. And I don't just say yes in a mild manner, I strongly say yes. The equipment should be banned because it's cruel and unreliable.

Using pain to discourage unwanted behaviour is simply wrong. You could and should be using rewards to encourage good behaviour instead of relying on punishment to train. The bottom line is that you can and absolutely should train your dog without the use of painful shock therapy.

The concept of how this equipment works is simply horrific. It allows the trainer or owner to remotely deliver an electric shock to a dog in order to suppress an undesirable behaviour. Shock collars train a dog to respond out of fear of further pain and even allow increasing the pain level if the dog continues its bad behaviour.

Scientific research confirms that this method is painful and can influence the animal's well being negatively in the long term. There is clear evidence that the use of this devices is unsafe, unnecessary and inhumane.

Experiments showed that shocks can cause responses associated with fear and distress such as yelping, struggling, hiding, biting, freezing, trembling, cowering, defecation and urination, just to name a few. They can make a dog scared of almost anything that they are looking at or smelling when they get shocked.

Shock collars also have a high potential for misuse, especially if they get into the hands of owners who may be inexperienced, impatient, angry, frustrated or even sadistic. Regrettably, they often do.

All experts agree that there is absolutely no need to use this sort of equipment. Positive, reward based training methods are far more effective than punishment or negative reinforcement methods.

I have no doubt that shock collar training can be at least superficially effective, but your dog could end up being afraid of you or even damaged in the long term. The use of reward-based training is far more effective and results in a more positive relationship between the dog and the owner.

Luckily, shock collars has already been subjected to ban or control in a number of countries in Europe, including France and Germany. But they are still widely available and used in the US.

I would never consider using a shock collar on my dogs. I've always used positive reinforcement to train them and had nothing but great results. Remember, dogs need training not punishment.

Are dog training (shock) collars safe and do they work?

I am considering using a training collar to teach my dog boundaries. I need to be able to keep her off leash, but she runs off if I let her off the leash. A fence, even an invisible fence, is out of the question as its not my house. I've tried teaching her boundaries for the last 5 months but it is not working well. She won't respond to "come" unless she's in the mood. I want to use a shock collar but I worry it may be inhumane. Are they effective and are they safe to use?

First off shock collars are not inhumane. Yes they are safe to use.
They do not give a strong shock. Yes I tried it on my own arm before ever putting it on the dog.
Properly used as a training tool they work very well for certain things. You need to read all the information that comes with the collar and learn how to use it.
Then you need to set up visable boundries for your dog. Your dog must have some sort of visable thing to see to learn where the boundries are. Like flags.

If your dog does not respong to the come commad or only does so at her pleasure you need to go back and do some basic obedience work with your pet. You need to have the basics down and if your dog does not come you do not have those down yet.

There can be many instances where the need for a dog-training collar is warranted. When used the right way, shock collars and spray collars can be very effective for dog training purposes. There is nothing inhumane or mean about using these types of dog training collars.

A shock collar is a dog collar that is electronic, and sends a mild shock sensation to your dog when you press a button on the receiver. Most collars allow you to adjust the level of sensation. You need to set the level of the shock in correlation with the size of your dog. There are also dog-training collars that have a button on the receiver that will allow the collar to emit a sound only when the button is pressed. After your dog is used to the collar, this can be a very effective way to train your dog without having to use an actual shock.

The idea behind collar training is simple. When your dog behaves in a way that is unacceptable, you press a button that send a gentle shock to your dog, which tells the dog that the behavior needs to be stopped. They will soon figure out that they are being disciplined for wrongdoing, and cease the undesired behavior. When they discern a pattern, i.e. they continue to get shocked because they are repeating the same behavior; they stop the behavior that causes them discomfort. This makes a dog-training collar highly effective.

There is a plethora of behavior issues that the use of a dog-training collar can be helpful in dissuading. Some of these things are jumping up on people, chewing on household items, barking incessantly, digging huge holes in the yard, and many other things.

Be sure that you have your transmitter with you all the times, so that you can stop bad behavior right away. You should always begin at the very lowest setting, and only raise the level of shock on the dog-training collar if the dog is unresponsive. If the collar setting is too high, then the dog could panic, and this is not what you are trying to do.

Training collars that use a type of spray, usually citronella, work on much the same principle as shock collars, although people that want to stop their dog from barking unnecessarily primarily use them. When the dog barks, the collar sends a spray of citronella, which the dog finds annoying, and eventually they learn to stop the behavior that is causing them to become sprayed. It is totally harmless to the animal, and only aggravates them, making them cease the bad behavior to avoid the spray.

Dog training with the use of dog training collars is a very simple and effective way to curb bad behavior in your dog. It is a safe and harmless way to discipline you dog, so that you can have a more safe and healthy relationship with your pet. When your dog behaves well, you can spend more time giving your dog the love and attention they need, and less time trying to stop undesirable acts. Dog training collars allow your dog to have the discipline it needs, and allow you to be able to relax, knowing that your dog is well behaved.

How do you feel about shock collars for dogs?

I have a trainer who is suggesting I use shock collars for my very poorly behaved Italian Greyhounds, to help them become potty trained and to get my puppy to be less aggressive towards my older dog. My dogs are pretty crazy/wild acting. Do shock collars hurt dogs? I know I got shocked by one a while back at a friend's house and it felt horrible to me. Maybe that one was too high voltage, though, I don't know. What do you think? I'm really looking for opinions. Thanks!
Well, for those of you who think potty-training is so easy, that depends entirely on the breed and temperment of the dog. And believe me, I have tried many things, like stern voice, spray bottles, and crating for 5 minutes for misbehavior. The smart-allek answers I don't need. And if you think IGs can't be aggressive . . . well, I find that ridiculous. Any breed can be aggressive. My adult one is very shy, but my little one has a mean streak.

I think shock collars are a method used by people you want a quick fix or don't have the skill to train their dogs in manner that isn't traumatizing. Shock collars aren't as bad as some people might think but they do 'train by trauma'. You can train dogs to do what you want by rewarding good behavior and punishing [ignoring] the bad behavior. It just takes time for someone to train a pet. our pets for most people are like our kids and I seriously doubt if you attached any level of a voltage to child it would be consider child abuse. But just like kids, you can train dogs with love and rewards. A shock collar in my opinion is no different then a paddle for a kid. Some people take it to extreme. The shock collar isn't a useless method but I think it should only be used in cases were the dogs are prone to biting or causing injury. Some dogs are naturally very strong and that can create potential for injury to others and so it might be best to have that extra protection to keep the dog from accidentally hurting someone. But in general if you have the time and space to do some one on one training, the collar isn't needed. I have a boxer puppy that is yr old, he was nuetered shortly after he was born. He is an extremly quit and calm dog but when others used come over he had tendencey to get very excited and actually knocked people over because of his strength even though he was only 2 ft high and >35ibs. I wouldn't put a shock collar on him but if I had kids or if I lived in a more populated area I might concider it just to keep him from jumping on people that dont know him because he has caused minor injurys to friends but I worked with him and took the time to train him and now he is just fine when people come over he go up to them sits down and wags his littel tail so fast you cant see it. He knows if he does that then the person will pay attention to him but if he doesnt then he gets ignored and rejected and could even get put in his cage.
