My dog pulls on the leash because he is scared and wants to get home. He refuses treats and ignores commands.?

We adopted him 2 weeks ago and its getting worse. He is scared of all traffic, buses, garbage cans etc. He's great with other dogs and people who are walking dogs, but people standing around randomly scare him too. He's a 1 year old Siberian Husky. We have had him on a prong collar, harness, non-pull-harness and gentle lead. None cure the issue, he pulls me and I can't take him anywhere. HELP!

I have a husky puppy and know they are V-E-R-Y head strong. I have never had a dog so stubborn. Take your choke chain (NOT the one with the spikes!) and put it high on his neck, just below the base of his skull. This will not allow him to move his head when you have the leash taught. This focuses the dog and makes them listen to you and not on what is going on around them. Keep the dogs head up. Take time with him. He needs TLC and you should introduce the world slow. When you put him on the leash, don't attack him to get it on. Start by holding the leash with him around, try to let him come to you and let him put his head near the collar. Patients is the key to these dogs. Rewards are so important too! praise the dog often, but be firm. You are the leader. They also sell certain face harness for this purpose to train dogs. They don't hurt so if your dog whines like mine, which Siberians are known for, keep a cool head and stay confident in yourself. He should walk by your side so don't give him more leash than that and when he tries to tug or pull away correct him by tugging the collor to break his concentration. I would also say lessons would help. Sounds like something traumatic happen to him. Even so, you can get through it and he'll love you more! Tell yourself I am the pack leader! Also, remember, leading is a way of life with Huskys, one moment of "well that's OK just this once" and it's back to square one.

Antifreeze tastes sweet and delicious to your pet, but it is a deadly poison. Clean up any radiator drainage spots with water immediately. Ask for brands of antifreeze that are now safer for pets and more environmentally sound.

Frequent brushing of indoor pets is even more important in winter to remove dead skin and hair and help stimulate the animal's oil glands. Low humidity can lead to dry, itchy skin and increased shedding.

I just started clicker training. How do I know if my dog knows what the click means?

I don't know of any way to tell if my 6 year old pug Dudley knows what the click of the clicker means. Is there any way to tell? Also, I'd like some tips to help me get started with clicker training.

You will know that he clicker is "charged" when you click and your dog turns around and looks at you or perks his ears and shows interest.

It can take a couple of days to "charge" the clicker. As said beore - get a bag of treats, and simply click and treat - several times a day.

Using a choke collar with small dogs?

I have used choke collars for my positive/negative training form for a while. I have a friend who has an aggressive chihuahua and I was wondering if you should deal with an aggressive small dog the same way you would with a larger dog; with the use of a choke collar. Or does it being smaller make a difference, even though they come in the size fit for a chihuahua and the strength for such a dog.

If you are using a choke chain PROPERLY , key word being PROPERLY with only slight pops to correct the dog and never any other form of choking, then yes, a choke chain can technicaly be used with a small breed, although I prefer slip collars as they actually pop better and there are no chains to become tangled.

HOWEVER, I don't recomend you even think about training an aggressive chi yourself, especially if you have to ask how to properly use the training tools. Find an experienced trainer, and take it from there. Choke chains can be very affective, but only if used properly and in the right circumstances. With such a small dog you run a large risk of seriously injuring or killing the dog if you use a choke chain improperly. Each dog is different. Not all dogs respond to choke chains and similiar techniques. I don't even like using choke chains on smaller dogs. I think all other methods should be used first, because the risk is very high for injury if you use the choke chain incorrectly.

Training my Puppy, help please.?

She is so lovable, but likes to bite, bark, etc. When she is calm it's like she is an angel.
I want to correct her bad behaver but I don't want to use a shock collar. And the training collars that spray them in the face are as pricie as the shock collers.
I have looked at remotes the makes noise, but with a 7yr. mix breed I'm scared that it will upset or bother her.

Well-fitted choke chain or prong collar, depending on the need. Used for control and correction. I'm very well aware of how these collars need to fit for maximum impact with minimal correction.
Also, a 4-ft. leather lead.

For dog shows:
Diamond-link ("snake") or jeweler's link choke chain, various widths. I use these for control, a bit "dressier" than your average choke chain and not as easy to see against the dog's coat. Like a regular choke, should fit high and snug on the dog's neck.

what is a goood way to train a 5 month puppy to walk on leash?

I am 100 pounds, the puppy is already at 70lbs.
Yes- the puppy is a large breed dog. She keeps pulling and I cannot walk with her at all. I am out of breath and my backs and legs are aching after trying to walk. Thus, I need solid advice.

The best way to train a puppy on a leash is to keep control of the situation at all times. Whenever the pup starts jumping around or wants to run off, STOP where you are. Don't take another step. Tell the dog to "heel" and direct her back to your side. As soon as the dog settles down, praise her and start walking again. If she tries to take off STOP again, give her the heel command, and direct her back to your side. If her misbehavior on the leash continues for more than 15 minutes, say "no walks", turn around and go back home. (Continue to STOP walking any time she tries to bolt.)

Don't hit her or yell at her. This will just make "walking" painful, aggravating and frightening for her. Just tell her "no walks" and go back home. Never allow her to drag you around.

If you consistently use this STOP technique, the dog will soon learn that misbehaving on her walks makes the walk end, and cuts off her time outside with you.

All responsible dog owners need a leash when taking your dog for a walk. In many cases a proper leash is used at home especially if your dog is aggressive towards friends, strangers other family members and or pets.

Several options are available depending on your needs. They should fit correctly and be adjusted for comfort while wearing the leash. Always make them wear a collar and leash in public places for safety with the ID and rabies tags, just in case they get loose.

When the collar and leash is new try it inside first, then in the yard if you have one followed by short public strolls and observe behavior carefully for a few days. If your dog gets loose and injures someone or another animal often law suits follow, NOT GOOD! That's why the correct collar and leash is critical. Don't be tempted if their pulling you around, this is a common trap many folks fall into after nearly having their arm yanked out of its socket.

Many leash and collar options are available now using more advanced technology. The chest leash offers better control, the retraceable leashes are popular now but can still be a problem if you let your dog have to much of a lead always use caution as sudden excitement can cause trouble. A shorter, maybe 6 foot lead is advisable.

Collar options:

In the old days and even now, dogs were trained primarily with choke chain collars and while this is a tool option it is not considered the best choice nowadays. There are alternative choices we have today for training dogs, like head halter collars and no pull halters each having it's devoted followers as does the simple buckle collar.

Controversy surrounds another type of training collar and it has been deemed by many as being cruel and inhumane. This type collar is better known as the prong collar. It looks like a dungeon torture chamber device, but it is really a kinder, gentler tool for many dogs and helps stop your dog from pulling your arm off. It is not right for all dogs, but it works quite well on anxious, strong or dogs that seem to have a high endurance for pain.

Prong collars are often the most misunderstood of the training options available today. They are not recommended for daily use and are not designed for very aggressive dogs. They are too hard on dogs that act scared or show fear once outside their comfort zone. This collar is not for young pups, however they are often used carefully by expert trainers for older pups.

The pinch or prong collar is made of interlocked metal links, each with two blunt prongs that pinch the dog's neck skin when the collar is tugged on. They pinch similar to you pinching your own skin. They press evenly around the neck and they will not penetrate or break the skin.

Some companies now have rubber tips, in my experience they reduce efficiency. Your dog needs to feel the pointed prongs and the rubber simply acts as padding thereby stopping the prongs from doing their job. Putting rubber tips on the prongs means they are too sharp to begin with (test a metal one before buying with your own finger tips) FYI if the rubber tip comes off you may hurt your dog.

Prong/pinch collars are not for daily use and should only be used a few times for training purposes mostly. Although for more hard headed dogs it often takes a little longer. Remain calm yet assertive, and consistent because typically dogs are just a mirror our own emotions and actions.

Often trainers only use the pinch/prong collar on large dominant breeds, but the choices of course are made by the owner and the dogs personal relationship, show respect and your dog will give respect. Prong collars are not status symbols, or jewelry and should not be used as such.

Always set your dog up for success, this helps build confidence, and the rewards are a calm submissive state which allows you to live in harmony and peace with your best friend.

Chain Leads and Chain Collars - Are They the Same and Are They Safe?

I was looking at pet smart.com and I just wanted to know if chain collars and chain leads were safe and if they were the same thing. Thanks in advance.

They are not the same - chain leads don't make contact with the dog while chain collars (usually called choke chains - lovely huh?) do. Chain leads are good for dogs who like to try and chew on their lead as they can't damage them.

Choke chains are used by people who should know better than choking their dog. Harnesses are much better (and kinder) for controlling your dog.

There is a right and a wrong way to put chain collars on a dog. This article illustrates the right way.

When you have decided to start using chain collars on your dog, there is a right and a wrong way for you to put it on. This is going to keep the dog from being injured by the chain collar. Here are the steps that you should take in order to put the chain collars on correctly.

The first thing that you should do is do some research and figure out what the best chain collars are for your dog. While you are at the pet store, you should examine the chain carefully to make sure that there aren't any sharp edges on it. Once you have figured out that it's safe, purchase the collar.

Hold the collar in your one hand, hold the end ring in the other hand and guide the chain through the inside of the ring in order to form the collar.

Once the collar has been assembled, place your hand through the inner part of the chain collar. When it's loose on your hand, it should look like a letter 'P'.

When the collar is in the shape of a 'P' on your hand, take the hand with the collar, place your fingers on your dog's muzzle, and slide the chain collar over the head of your dog.

Once the chain collar is around the neck of your dog, pull the collar and release it. If the chain collar releases, then it's on correctly. If it's tight, then you have to take it off and turn it around.

You want to make sure that the collar is going to be comfortable on your dog to avoid injuring your dog. A good chain collar can be a useful training tool when it's used right and with love and care for your dog.
