Sneaking a cat into an apartment?

I'm moving in a huge commercial building, on the 12th floor. I am fostering four kittens right now in my dorm room where they aren't allowed. I love these kittens. I want to keep one of them and I've already signed the lease agreement. The apartment is no-pets. I want to sneak one in. I know it's not allowed, etc. I want to know if people have done it and gotten away with it? This building is huge, I think 14 floors. I think if we have maintenance coming we can hide it in a closet or bedroom for the hour they're there. what are the other risks? Bringing in cat food and litter, bringing the cat to the vet? I think I can handle that--big grocery bags, pet carrier in a cardboard box early in the morning, etc.

Yes people do it and get away with it - but many also get caught. Have you thought about what you'll do with the cat when/if you get caught with it and your landlord demands you get rid of it? The landlord has the right to enter your apartment with no notice if there is a problem, and if you're not home they'll find the cat, and out he'll go. You really ought to forgo owning a pet until you can live somewhere where they are allowed. Sorry, but I see too many cats who're dumped in shelters because of people moving to a no-pets building, or getting caught with one in a no-pets building.

My cat will only eat full-sized pieces of food.?

Once he has finished eating, there is about a quarter of a dish left of the broken food bits. He refuses to eat them. He literally starves himself and meows at me like crazy until I empty it and put in new full pieces. I know cats are finicky, but he never used to do this. I have not changed his food type or anything. I did go to Europe for six months and leave him with my sister, but she says she didn't change the food type either, and he didn't do it while he was with her. I buy him premium cat food, and it really bothers me that I am throwing away about 15% or 20% of the bag. He has always disliked soft food, so I stick with crunchy, but I guess maybe it's bothering his teeth or he can't chew the small pieces since he's about nine years old now.

Even if you steeled yourself, you would feel as if you had lost part of your family. Further the pound is not keeping your pet free. You pay.

We bet that you will be back in the middle of the night and take him back home! We have been through it. So just forget, and take out that insurance, and get yourself some peace of mind.

You know something. They would have struck a deal with an insurer for a comprehensive policy on which each contributes an amount. That may be cheaper for you as well, and give you better coverage. That's known as Group Insurance Policy; just the same as you have in your office. The higher the number of insureds, lower the premium. So join, and take the benefit.

Any suggestions on teaching my cat to use the dog door (for a small dog)?

Right now I don't want to let my cats out because they are too young and not fixed, (5 months old). They both want to go out and try to escape out the front door all the time. They are scared of the dog door right now, which is fine with me, but when the time comes I would like to encourage them to use it, so that they can come in on their own, especially if we are not home. The rural environment here is pretty safe for cats. Thanks for any suggestions.

I taught my cats to use the cat door by first taping it open so they can see that leads outside. Next take an open can of cat food and place it on the other side. they'll see the cat food and hopefully step through the door to get it. reward them with just a little every time they step throu. Then after they've gotten the hang of this, then un-tape the flap and do the same thing. You will get lots of exercise going from one side to the other as well. You may have to put them through it physically until they get that all they have to do it push it with their paw or nudge it with their nose and it will move. Some cats pick it up almost right away while others need you to practice more with them. Anyway that's how I did it and it worked, so best of luck, hope this helps

How do I get my puppies to eat their puppy food?

I have three 10 month old basset hounds... they are very healthy... but since we have had them they have never been to extatic about eating their puppy food. We have tried Beniful, Pedigree, Purina, Kibbles and Bits, Iams, and Alpo but they will not eat it. We put it out and they nibble but then they run off and play. We are forced to just leave it out all the time so they will get their nutrition. We've tried canned and dry but they don't like any of it. We always end up giving them table scraps to keep them from starving... what should we do?

From experience, they are puppies, they wont die from not eating for a couple of days. As long as they have water they will be fine. But one thing i can suggest is take their food away completely if they wont eat. I would try it for a day to start out and when they get hungry they will eat what you put out for "them" People food is very bad for puppies and once you start giving it to them they will depend on you to give it to them all the time even when they get older. Dogs can't get nutrition from our food so if you are worried about nutrition, don't give them table scraps. Their bodies are so young right now that they get nothing from our food but the taste. Just remember, when they get hungry enough, they will eat their food. You just have to stick to it and not give in. They are only dogs, not humans. I'm not sure if you have ever seen the show THE DOG WHISPERER but if not, it's on national geographic channel. Ceasar Millan is the Main man of the show and if he were confronted about this same type of problem, he probably would say the same thing I just said. You have to be the boss and when you give in and give them what they want, table scraps, they are controlling you. Sorry for rambling but I do hope this helps you out somewhat.

It may come as a surprise, if you're a new cat owner, that many health problems may befall your feline friend. Some problems are easily preventable, while others are hereditary.

Hairballs

Hairballs are among the most common of cat health problems. Cats groom themselves almost constantly, and swallow the loose hair that comes off their tongues. Occasionally, the hair gathers into a ball and lodges in the cat's digestive tract instead of passing on through the body. If your cat starts coughing and hacking, he probably has a hairball. While the end product is unpleasant for the owner, most cats don't have a problem dislodging hairballs.

However, hairballs can occasionally pass into a cat's intestines and cause a blockage. This can be a life-threatening problem. There are a few signs to look for to see if your cat's hairball is dangerous. If your cat is constipated, off his feed, or is lethargic with a dull coat, then he could have a serious blockage. A vet exam is definitely in order.

To prevent hairballs, groom your cat frequently to remove loose hair. In addition, feed your cat food that helps control hairballs.

Worms

For many cats, worms are a recurring problem. Roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms most commonly infect cats. Cats can occasionally develop heartworms, as well. If your cat seems unable to gain weight, is infested with fleas, or has white specks that look like grains of rice in his stools, take him to the veterinarian for worm testing.

Worms are easily cured with a few doses of medication, but if left untreated, they can be fatal.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are another common health problem in cats. This infection is particularly common in unneutered male cats, although female cats can also develop this problem. If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, a urinary tract infection is suspect. If your cat's urine smells strong, again a urinary tract infection may be the cause. These infections need to be treated by a veterinarian. Ask about cat foods that reduce the likelihood of another infection.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

FIP is caused by a mutation of the corona virus. According to some experts, cats living in multi-cat environments tend to test positive for enteric corona virus. Cats can live with that virus remaining quietly in the intestines with no sign of disease for their entire lifetime. In other cases, probably a genetic pre-disposition, the virus mutates into FIP.

Once a cat has contracted FIP, it will display symptoms of a mild upper respiratory infection: sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. It may also have diarrhea, weight loss and lethargy. Most cats fully recover from this primary infection, although some may become virus carriers. A small percentage of exposed cats develop lethal FIP weeks or even years after the primary infection.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

FIV, or cat AIDS, is not always fatal. FIV decreases the ability of the cat's immune system to fight infections. Cats with FIV may remain free of symptoms for years. It is when the cat contracts other illnesses in the chronic stage of FIV infection that FIV is first suspected. This long list of illnesses includes oral-cavity infections, upper-respiratory infections, weight loss, ear infections, kidney disease, and many others. Although there is, as yet, no vaccine, all cats should be tested for the virus. The virus is transmitted through saliva, usually when a cat is bitten in a cat fight.

Feline Leukemia Virus

FLV was, until recently, the most common fatal disease of cats. But with a vaccine now available, the number of cases is dwindling. Although the name leukemia means cancer of the white blood cells, this is only 1 of the many diseases associated with this virus, such as other types of cancer, anemia, arthritis and respiratory infections. FLV is preventable if the cat is immunized before being exposed to the virus. Although the disease is not always immediately fatal, cats with FLV rarely have a long life expectancy. NEVER bring other cats into your household when you have a cat with FLV.

Lyme Disease

If your cat spends time outdoors, you should check him regularly for ticks. If you find a tick on your cat's body and he has been lethargic and acts as if he is in pain, ask your vet to test for Lyme Disease. This disease is transmitted to people and animals by deer ticks.

Some cats may show subtle symptoms while others may show none -- symptoms are hard to recognize and often may be confused with other illnesses or old age. Be observant of your pet's behavior. It is the only way to know if your pet has contracted Lyme disease if no tick was found. Some symptoms of Feline Lyme Disease include:

(a) lethargy,

(b) reluctance to jump or climb stairs,

(c) limping, or reluctance to put weight on a paw,

(d) loss of appetite.

The key to dealing with Feline Lyme Disease is prevention and early diagnosis and treatment. You should reduce the tick population around your home with simple landscape changes and spraying.

Good Health Care

Taking your cat for a regular check-up with the vet, and keeping all vaccinations on schedule will help assure your cat a long and healthy life. Prevention is the first line of defense for most feline illnesses.

Many owners keep their cats indoors to protect them from cars, from cat fights which may expose them to deadly viruses, from ticks, and other hazards.

Outdoor cats will enjoy greater freedom, but require a watchful eye, loving attention to their health status, and regular visits to the veterinarian.

A cat reaches reproductive maturity between five and nine months of age, or upon the time they reach 4.5 to 7.0 pounds in weight. It is possible for domestic longhaired and shorthaired cats, as well as feral cats, may reach sexual maturity faster than purebred breeds and indoor cats.

Female cats have heat patterns that last between seven and twenty-one days. If the animal is not impregnated, her heat patterns may become irregular, with periods of non-heat becoming brief, often as short as two days. When experiencing estrus, or heat, a female cat may make loud, howling sounds, and rub themselves along the floor with the tail raised. Heat cycles are most common between January and September, when the amount of daylight is longer, but can occur at any time. Seasonal reproduction is encouraged by the warmer temperatures as well.

Once a suitable male has encountered the female, copulation quickly ensues, as usually results in a pregnancy. The duration of gestation in cats lasts from fifty-six to seventy-one days, with the average length being sixty-one days. The average number of litters that a female can produce within one year is three to five, with the average litter containing four to six kittens.

The birthing process is called queening, and preparations for this process should begin several weeks ahead of time. Giving the female a box in which to birth in should be done, and it should be lined with blankets or towels. At queening, the box should be lined with newspapers in order to aid in soaking up any fluids.

There are three stages of feline labor. In the first stage, the cervix will soften and dilate, with the animal moaning or panting. Restless behavior may be noted, as well as frequent trips to the litter box. The second stage begins when the female begins to push out her first kitten, which takes the longest to deliver. This first birth will dilate the cervix in preparation for the remaining kittens. Each kitten should take between fifteen and thirty minutes to be born. The delivery of the placenta is the third stage of delivery.

At birth, each kitten is born within his own amniotic sac. If this sac is not broken by the birthing process, the mother will break it, as well as sever the umbilical cord. After all of the kittens are delivered, the mother also eats the placenta, which stimulates lactation. Soon after birth, the mother will lick her kittens; this helps to clean and dry the new babies, as well as stimulate their circulation.

At birth, the kitten is blind, deaf, and helpless. They lack distinctive color patterns, and some do not acquire their unique markings until several weeks later. The mother will nurse her kittens until she begins to wean them, usually around four months. At this point, additional food should be introduced to the kitten. Hard chow formulated specifically for kittens can be given. It may be softened with water to make chewing more comfortable. Cow's milk should not be given to kittens, as most will develop lactose intolerance as they grow, and the cow's milk will cause gastric problems.

If your cat is pregnant, then you probably have some planning to do. Many pet owners do not intend for their cat to become pregnant. If your cat is going to have babies soon, then you should not only prepare for the new litter, but you should also give your cat special attention. A proper diet and nutrition is vital for a pregnant cat, just like it is for a pregnant human being.

The most important factor is that your cat needs extra calories. This does not mean that your kitty should overeat, but simply have more food than normal. More protein enriched foods and calcium should also be added. Not only will this help give your cat the vitamins that she needs for the after-birth, but it will also give her the extra energy to make it through until delivery.

Instead of buying the same food that you always give your cat, pick up a bag of kitten food. This does sound out of the ordinary, but the same food that your new kittens will soon be eating is an excellent food for your pregnant cat, the reason being because kitten food has more calcium, protein, and fat than normal adult cat food. All of the nutrition that your pregnant cat needs is wrapped up into one type of food.

You should also continue to feed your cat normal adult cat food while she is pregnant. A recommended brand is one such as Eukanuba. A good way to do this is to mix up the kitten food with the regular food. Instead of feeding your pregnant cat two large meals per day, feed her small frequent meals.

During the later stages of the pregnancy, she should be eating two times more than she ate before she became pregnant.

Many veterinarians will recommend a vitamin mineral supplement in order to help give the cat the extra calcium that her bones will need. Just as with a human pregnancy, the babies are taking all of her strength and calcium that she needs. In order to keep her healthy, it is up to you as her owner to add it back into her diet or blood stream. This will prevent future tooth decay or bone deterioration.

The total gestation period for a cat is nine weeks. The energy that your pregnant cat will need is reflected by the amount of weight that she gains. After your pregnant cat delivers her litter, her most important role will be nursing. You should pay attention to her changing needs throughout the process. She will need as much energy as possible in order to keep reproducing milk. The intake of water is very important in order to help her keep reproducing milk.

Around five weeks of age, the kittens will start to eat more solid food, and nurse from their mother less. At the same time, the mother will also start to eat less. Most kittens are weaned from the mother at eight weeks of birth, and by this time, the mother should have enough energy to go back to her usual pre-pregnancy food and diet.

Is it possible to buy a pet cage that connects to a cat flap?

My cat has been scratching the floor so I'd like to keep her in a (large) cage overnight. I'd like this to connect to the cat flap so she can still go in and out as she pleases. Does anyone know if it is possible to get such a thing?

That doesn't sound like a very nice sleeping arrangement, it'd be like sleeping next to a half open door all night. I think you should tackle the problem of your cat scratching the floor, rather than keeping her in a cage at night. If she has just started this behaviour, it may be down to stress. There are these plug in cat pheremones that you can buy (ask your vet) and these calm your cat. Obviously also, if you see her scratching the floor, just say NO loudly. In the meantime, can you not just close the door of the room that the catflap leads into, and put her basket or bed (and cat food, if you leave it down at night and water) at the end of the room furthest away from the catflap, and shut her in there for the night? That way, at least your WHOLE house isn't getting shredded, but she can still go in and out as she wants, AND she doesn't have to sleep right next to the catflap.

I think you should start by putting in an electric fence. Then put in mines just around the perimiter. Then dig holes and put spikes at the bottome and cover with leaves and cat food.
