Does anyone have any experience with LED (illuminated) dog collars?

If so, can you recommend a good brand (in terms of battery life, weight, water-resistance etc.)?

I bought my dogs human head lamps, and threaded them on to their collars. Works great. Based on the design, its probably even water proof (although I've not put it to the test). Cheaper and better quality than anything I've seen marketed for that purpose.

Another option is to put an LED blinker on your dog (the kind people get for biking). These are much cheaper(<$5), although they do tend to come off and get lost.

If you have trouble keeping track of your bird dog when hunting in heavy cover, then you might want to consider purchasing a beeper collar. Keeping track of you dog while hunting has always been a serious concern. Hunters have selected white dogs over the dark ones so that they are more easily observed in the brush. This obviously works well until it snows and your white dog disappears. In the past hunters used bells on the dogs to so they could hear where the dog is approximate located. If you are using a pointing dog the sound of the bell obviously stops when the dog goes on point. Then you must quickly remember where you last heard the bell and move in that direction prior to the flush of the bird.

Beeper collars have now replaced the use of bells on dogs. These collars have a speaker, amplifier and battery attached to the collar. They basically are designed to beep as the dog hunts but unlike bells will continue sound off even if the dog has quit moving. These innovative devices allow the dog handler to set the time between reports, the volume and even allow you to change the type of sound. You can have the collar give a hawk scream to freeze a running bird or gentle down a covey of quail with a quail call. The ability to change the tone and volume of the sound also helps people who have hearing problems. Adjusting the collar tone to one you can hear will allow you to hear the collar at a greater distance. An addition feature of many beeper collars is the ability program the collar to only beep when your dog is on point. A variation of this feature on some collars is the ability to start the on point beeping very softly, and then increases its volume so as not to prematurely flush the birds.

The safety of your dog is paramount when in the field. The use of a beeper collar can save your dogs life. Just knowing the location of the dog in relation to a road or highway will allow you to move your dog away from it. In addition if you hunt in areas that have rattlesnakes you know that sooner or later your dog is going to encounter one. When the dog runs over a snake it will begin to rattle. Most bird dog will ignore the snake and keep hunting however if you hear the beeper collar remain in the same area as the rattling then it is time to move the dog away quickly. Quick stimulation from an electronic dog collar will help ensure future snake avoidance. You should always inspect your dog closely after a snake encounter to make sure it was not struck. Placing the dog at heel and observing the animal for a short time is advisable. A number of years back while grouse hunting I lost sight of our English setter on a very windy afternoon. I spent an hour before I located her trapped in a barbed wire fence that became entangled with her collar. I might not have found her except for her beeper collar.

There are many brands and types of beeper collars on the market. The best ones allow you to make changes in sound and tone as well as various point and run features. No matter what collar you choose it should allow you to place the speaker on the dog's neck between the dog's ears. You do not need to distract your dog with the speaker blaring in its ear. Some of the best collars have the battery located on the opposite side of the collar that the speaker is on. This design places the battery on the dog's chest and the speaker at the back to the dogs head. According to beeper collar manufactures the sound of the beeper does not damage the dog's ears. New technology from Garmin GPS now allows you to keep track of your dog on a handheld GPS unit. These quiet tracking units are relatively expensive at $600. Hopefully the price of these units will come down over time but until then most bird hunters will have to be satisfied with beeper collars to keep track of their bird dogs.

The answer is eucalyptus leaves. You can get them at any craft store. For some reason the fleas don't like the smell of it. I used this for many years when I lived in California. I had a dog and 2 cats and a toddler! Safe for the kids and the environment.

Sprinkle the Borax

Borax is great for fleas. It is not toxic and you can sprinkle it on your carpet. Let it sit for a few days and then vacuum it up. You can sprinkle it around the fence of your yard too. I understand that using Skin So Soft from Avon on the animals' coats will repel fleas and mosquitoes. It is also good for the kids skin but just make sure you get the original from Avon.

An inexpensive way to rid your yard of fleas is to sprinkle DE (diatomaceous Earth) all over the yard. You can buy a large bag for just a few dollars at any swimming pool supply store. It is used normally as part of the filtration system for swimming pools.

I worked with a man who had bird dogs and his wife was a student in plant sciences. They found that planting tansy (an herb) around the dogs' pens kept the problem in check. Their children played in the same yard as the dogs. And they were not bitten at all. Maybe this would be a safe and effective way for the woman with the neighboring flea problem. And not be harmful to her child.

Set A Trap

I read this in a Mother Earth News Magazine about 15 years ago and it works great. At night you put a dinner plate on the floor (preferably in the room with the worst flea problem) and put a drop of dish soap in some water on the plate. Put a lamp on the floor next to the plate. The fleas are attracted to the light and jump on the plate. Without the dish soap the water surface tension is enough that they can jump off but with the soap the sink and drown. If this is done for several nights eventually all the fleas will be gone unless more are brought in.

Commercial chemical flea treatments usually work rather quickly and are easy to use, unfortunately, some pets and their owners are allergic to them and need a natural flea remedy. Fortunately for both the pet and pet owner, there are a number of ways to get rid of fleas naturally. These remedies work for both dog fleas as well as cat fleas.

The first thing you'll want to do is wash all of your household bedding, rugs and furniture covers that your pet may have come into contact with, which will probably be just about everywhere in your home. Then sprinkle a natural flea remedy of a powdered form of dried pennyroyal, of the mint family, or pyrethrum powder on your carpets, furniture and any place where your pet often sleeps. Repeat this for the next three to four days.

Now it's time to wash your pet using a natural shampoo made of one cup of a very mild dishwashing detergent and two teaspoons of eucalyptus oil. Before you wash your pet in this natural flea remedy, steep pennyroyal leaves in boiling water and then let it cool. Once you have shampooed your pet and lathered it up with the shampoo, use the pennyroyal tea to rinse it off.

Prevent Fleas Before They Bite

Pennyroyal planted outside your home will stop a flea infestation before it has a chance to get inside the house. If your pet spends part of the day outside and part inside, plant it where your pet usually hangs out while outside. As a natural flea remedy, pennyroyal will continue to grow as a ground cover and is attractive and has a pleasant flowery smell to it as well.

Another natural flea remedy is to make a small tube for your pet to wear around its neck and stuff it with pennyroyal and a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Your tube will have to be re-stuffed and oiled every few days to keep it fresh.

A homemade flea trap can be created that will serve as a natural way to get rid of those pesky cat and dog fleas. Fill a pan similar to a cookie sheet with water and place it under a light close to the ground. At night, the fleas will jump towards the light and fall into the water and drown.

Another good idea to prevent flea infestations is to keep your grass cut short. The heat from the sun will kill flea eggs before they can hatch. Also, keep your pets away from dark, wet areas where fleas often lay their eggs and the conditions are ideal for hatching.

How do I get my 1 year old bird dog to swim in my pool?

It's not cold at all, but she won't swim. She won't fetch though, and she won't be bribed by food. Any good ideas?

Some dog just don't like the water. Fetching for my dog worked the best, she loved to jump in and it was really good excercise. We first put on a float and she would use that to try to get her ball, eventually it wasn't enough for her and she started jumping in on her own. I'm not sure she'd ever go in unless something was thrown for her. Just make sure she knows how to get out...which is always a good idea incase she ever falls in when your not around.

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a lean, well-balanced, dog. The muzzle is long and the broad ears are set high and lie close to the chiseled head. The almond-shaped eyes and nose are brown.

These dogs have long legs with webbed feet and their tails are customarily docked by 60%.

The short, sleek, water resistant coat should be solid liver or liver & white, with the head is solid or nearly solid and the body speckled, patched, or roan. The German Shorthaired Pointer also has a very thick undercoat making it ideal for hunting in cold weather. This breed is easy to groom and an average shedder.

Using in the Field

The German Shorthaired Pointer is an intelligent breed capable of performing nearly all gundog roles including hunting larger and more dangerous game. It is a pointer and retriever, an upland bird dog and water dog and in addition has a scent hound's talented nose. It is an excellent swimmer but also works well in rough terrain. It is tenacious, hardy, reliable, and thoroughly capable of working out of sight of its handler.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has an instinct to escape and they have been known to jump or climb 4 to 6 foot fences. Tracking devices are recommended on this dog.

At Home

The German Shorthaired Pointer is very energetic, cheerful and friendly. They are loyal and protective and not happy if isolated from the family. Shocking collar for cats?

Does anyone have a shocking collar for cats for sale or know if they even make one? I have a cat and he's a little sh**! He kills birds in the yard and claws my couch. A buddy gave me one he said was for both cats and dogs. We put it on my cat Darwin and it knocked the crap out of him. Knocked him to the floor and made him go nuts. The first bunch of times it was funny as hell but now he's randomly walking into walls and doesn't have much balance. I don't think the one my buddy gave me was really made for cats but I need something. Dogtra 1200 NCP or a tritronics model. I have used both and like them a lot, but, the Dogtra is cheaper and just as good as the more expensive models. Hope I helped!!

ADD: The collar is made of rubber or hard plastic and the unit itself is made out of metal. They are waterproof and I have never had one break on me. What is it that you do with them? I really abuse my E collars and they stand up great even after all the abuse..

When you are hunting upland birds with your retriever, you have to make sure that he understands steady to flush. Unlike other bird dogs that hunt upland birds, your retriever will not point. He should quarter ahead of the gun and look for birds to flush that are within the range of your shotgun. When the bird flushes, your retriever should sit until the bird has dropped and mark the bird, waiting for the command to retrieve.

The last thing that you want when you take your retriever upland hunting is to have him unsteady on the shot. This can cause him to miss marks, chase fly away birds and also get in the way of other hunters. The best way to teach your dog steady to flush is with the use of an electronic dog collar. You should teach the dog to sit and use mild stimulation if he jumps up and tries to run or gets excited. You should also use the verbal language to tell him to sit. Some hunters prefer to use a whistle in order to get their dogs to obey this command.

Your dog will have to learn how to sit to flush. Although he may sit on command and with the help of the collar, he will still have to remain seated with all of the action going on around him, after the bird has been flushed and the gun goes off. One way to train your dog to do this is by the use of electronic bird launchers. You can reenact a hunt in a way that will teach the dog to flush.

Use the bird launcher upwind so that the dog does not sit on the scent but on visual command. You do not want your dog to sit when he smells the bird or else he will be a pointer instead of a flusher. Using the collar, be sure to have the dog come with you to the launcher and launch a pigeon. Then give the sit command to your dog. He will quickly learn how to sit after the bird has been flushed.

Launch the bird, wait a few minutes and then give the sit command. Your dog should start to understand his job that he is to sit after the bird has been flushed. Do not use the collar automatically, but use voice command. You are going to want to get your dog used to the action without having to use the collar all of the time. If he does not sit after you tell him to do so after launching the bird, you can then use a mild stimulation to get him to sit to the flush.

Teaching your dog to sit to flush takes practice and continued training. Each time you use the bird launcher, you should launch the bird further. The objective is for your dog to sit at the sight of the flush without having being told to do so. As you continue with this training, your retriever will learn how to sit to flush. You can then teach him to retrieve upon command after the bird has fallen.

Question about separtion anxiety and dog whistles?

My 13 month old coonhound is a very friendly and submissive dog. The problems we have with her are: A) separation anxiety (she tends to tare stuff up that we leave out when we go to work) and B) in situations when she is off the leash in a non-fenced in area (e.g. at a doggy park or in the creek) she has problems coming when called, though she comes on command when at home and in our back yard.

Shock collars, besides being inhumane imo, are designed for headstrong alpha dogs, not timid fearful submissive dogs. A whistle is the same thing as the command 'come,' if she knows come and ignores it, why would she come to a whistle? Get her in some obedience training. It will give her more confidence and make her more reliable with commands, and the trainer could help you with the seperation anxiety.
Edit to add: If you don't want things tore up, then don't let her have access to it while you are away. Crate train her - which may help with her seperation anxiety, as it did with my male - or shut her in a puppy proof room. No electric cords, nothing that is valuable, nothing that can be tore up or swallowed. This is not just important for the safety of your belonging, but HER safety as well. I would hate for her to be shocked or choke on something or swallow a sock and die of obstruction, because you didn't protect her.

The origin of the hunting dog dates back 20,000 years ago when Mesolithic man used early dogs to hunt for food, shelter, and clothing. While hunting in only a sport now, and rarely used in the western world for sustenance, an ancient hunter's life depended on his hunting success. 9,000 years ago the dog's role changed though; this is when livestock was domesticated and the dog morphed from hunter, to protector and guard. By the Bronze Age, 4,500 B.C., there were five different types of dog in existence; the pointers, shepherds, mastiffs, greyhounds, and wolf breeds. Early cave paintings from this time show that dogs worked along side hunters, being bred for their specific job.

During this age man really began to cultivate the dog species to his needs. Dogs were bred for the specific environment and climate they lived in, and eventually to hunt certain species of prey. Today's modern dog channels these ancient ancestors, and not only is it why the dog has the superior nose to track prey, but it's where his instinct comes from to hunt. With man's dependence so heavily resting on the canine, this is around the time that man and dog began to develop a deep bond of kinship. The development of the dog is intricately linked with the evolution of humanity.

Hunting dogs were bred for certain types of hunts; the bird dogs were meant to flush fowl and some to retrieve it from the water. Some were bred to tree raccoons, others to hunt rodents. Every breed of dog has his purpose. As society advanced and developed though, less reliance was placed upon the hunt and the hunting dog. Hunting became a pastime, not a necessity, and the various breeds were used for pets, not for work. Many hunters take great pride in this hunting dog ancestry though, studying a breed's ancient ancestry, and striving to return these dogs to their former purpose and glory.

Today there are hundreds of breeds that all trace their genes back to these ancient hunters. Within each type there are more subcategories based upon a dog's specific characteristics. The hounds are broken up into sight or scent hounds; gun dogs consist of retrievers, setters, spaniels, water dogs, and pointers. Curs and Lakeland terriers are subcategories of the terrier. What all of these dogs have in common though, is their devotion to mankind for thousands of years.
