Citronella collar spray stops barking in many dogs. These collars apparently do not stop barking in all dogs. Let's face it, there are some real hard heads out there. Then there are some dogs that may be so slow-witted they don't associate the negative consequences of the collar with the barking. In any case, here is the way a spray collar works.

The MultiVet Anti-Bark Spray Collar, Citronella was the one we ordered and tested. The test subject was our high energy field type English Cocker Spaniel. No way we would subject this dog to a shock collar. She just needed to know that the barking was getting out of hand. She didn't seem capable of following our carefully phrased instructions to tone it down.

The collar working part is just a small black box that fits on the collar underneath the dogs head, on the front of the neck. The small box, about 2 inches square, includes a sensor, an oil reservoir and the spray pump.

Instruction said to put the collar on for a few days before turning it on. That's what we did, though we were past ready to give it a go.

When we finally armed the sprayer, the first bark produced a fine cloud of mist completely engulfing the dog's head. There is no spray of liquid, just a misty cloud, that's all. The second bark produced the same result and that was it. Two barks and then silence reigned. It's been much like that for about two months now.

The collar is only used occasionally. For the most part the spray collar isn't on and when it is on only part of the time is it armed. The dog learned that barking overly much was not desired. She took the hint and shut up most of the time. We didn't want her to quit barking. We just wanted her to control it.

Citronella collar results for us are completely positive. It's an inexpensive collar and may not work for all dogs. It worked for the one we tried it on though. The Multi-Vet Anti-Bark Spary Collar worked perfectly. worked perfectly.

I Know that there are anti-bark collars available, but do that work for howling? Whining isn't so bad cuz the neihbours can't hear it, but the howling will be a problem.

Citronella can be benign, but it can also create a lasting, fearful memory, oddly enough.

Try taking your dog on leash with you when you go outside to smoke, or better yet, save some $$ and quit.

How can I stop my 9 year old dog from peeing and pooing in the house?

This is a totally new behaviour? She has been a very well behaved and toilet trained dog all her adult life. don't listen to that danni babe twat shes talking out her ass. you NEVER rub a dogs nose in its own mess as this causes the dog to be scared and worried of you and will more likely make matters worse. if you have been to the vets to check her for health problems and they have said she is fine then it could well be the new person who has moved in she may think that she wont get as much attention as she did before the new person came to live with you make sure you give her lots of fuss and get the new person to do the same then she might not see them as so much of a threat. i would recommend giving your dog anything that a vet has not prescribed if in doubt have a chat with your vet im sure hes heard of this sort of behaviour before and he can advise you on the best thing to do.... good luck

Bark control collar for a crying dog?

I have a puppy pitbul and all she does is cry when she's in her crate. Nothing that I've tried works to get her to stop. Will a bark control collar work for when she cries? is there another collar that I can get to help her to stop crying?

She needs love and cuddles. Yes, you could gag her with a collar however she is crying because she is frightened and lonely. An anti bark collar will make her more frightened.

Spend the next two days having rehearsals for bedtime and putting her in her cage, however she might be happy and more content if you allowed her to sleep in somewhere other than a cage. The following is how to resolve the crying problems, unfortunately it refers to a male dog as this is pasted from my archives.

If you were a baby and had been taken from your mother and left alone, you would cry all night. He has been left alone in a strange place; he is frightened, confused and miserable. There are lots of adult dogs who suffer all of their lives from separation anxiety; some of these dogs belong to the people who will tell you just to let your puppy cry. Please don’t listen and don’t leave him to cry, it's easy to resolve this and its kind.

Try this, it will work and both you and your puppy will have good nights sleep,
Spend the first two days of his life with you by conning him and having rehearsals for bedtime.
After he has been fed and CARRIED out to the garden for his pees and poos, let him wander around the garden, then put him in a room on his own with a comfortable bed. Close the door and then immediately go back into the room and IGNORE HIM. Spend a minute or two cleaning your work tops if he is in the kitchen, or pretending to be occupied with something else. Walk out again and close the door and walk back in again immediately. Keep doing this over and over again. Eventually you can leave a short gap before you go back into the kitchen, when you know that he is asleep you can stop doing this.

You must listen for him waking up and you MUST GET TO HIM BEFORE HE CRIES. Pick him up and CARRY him into the garden.

Play with him and let him explore the garden. If it's time for another meal, give him this and take him out again, because he will want another pee. (Always praise your dog profusely when he pees or poos outside). Then put him into his bed, close the door to his room and start doing the door thing over and over again.

This is time consuming, however it works. By the end of day one he will have been put to bed several times and he will think that you are just on the other side of the door. Continue doing this for a couple of days and he will grow up without Separation Anxiety and he will stop crying at night. My dogs have never had Separation Anxiety; I think that they think that I never leave the house. Nevertheless I sleep downstairs for the first two nights.

I have given this advice to several people and it has worked very quickly, I know this because I have had emails from them.

Barking dogs often need some help to learn how much noise is acceptable. Collars of three types may be useful tools to control the noise. Shock collars, ultrasonic collars and spray collars all are used to control barking. Citronella collars offer a much less violent approach than shock collars and are reported to work just as well for many dogs.

We tested a MultiVet Anti-Bark Spray Collar on a very noisy little registered English Cocker Spaniel. This is a field type dog absolutely full up with energy and enthusiasm. That energy partly boiled over as noise. We didn't like it but it seemed to please her to generate volume for hours a day.

Here's what happened.

We ordered the collar and after receiving it just a few days later, we put the collar on without actually turning on the unit. That allowed a few days for the dog to become accustomed to a new collar.

The actual working part of the collar is only about 2 inches square. That box contains a bark sensor as well as the spray pump and oil reservoir.

On the first training day, we armed the device and sure enough in short order a bark sets off the pump. What happens is a quick puff of fine citronella mist surrounds the dog's head. It's obviously a startling development, but soon another bark issues forth and so does another cloud of sickly sweet smelling oil. That's it. No more barks then and no more oil clouds. Right then and there belle decided that was enough of that.

Since then the collar is only on the dog occasionally and then only part of the time is it armed and ready. Most of the time the barking is done only in sensible amounts for a good reason.

Barking dogs may learn what is acceptable behavior in just a short time with the use of a spray collar. Some dogs are not fast learners, bless their hearts. Apparently some dogs just keep on barking, but the one we tested it on picked up very quickly on what excessive barking could do. She learned fast.

Yes. The Shelter I work for suggests these collars ( citronella ) for people having problems with barking dogs. They work very well. The strong odor affects the dogs because of their strong sense of smell. My friend , who is a vet, uses it on her Great dane. Its very rare he actually gets sprayed because it usually just takes one or two times, and the dog doesn't wanna bark with it on. Very effective product, I highly reccomend it

EDIT IG64... citronella does not have a lasting odor. Once sprayed the odor goes away very quickly, thats the reason they use citronella in the collar. The few hundred dogs that I have seen with these collars on react to the initial spray, then they are not bothered after that. And it does not spray on the face of the dog, it sprays a mist in front of the dog, its designed not to spray directly in the dogs face

A dog that barks all day and night can ruin your life and make war with your neighbors.

There is a huge range of training collars for dogs and a vociferous debate among owners and trainers as to whether these collars are humane and effective or whether they are cruel and counterproductive.

Different types of collar are used for different purposes. The two main uses are for distance control, when the dog is out of the trainer's immediate reach and is not on a leash and the second aim is to control excessive barking.

The distance training collar enables the trainer to administer a shock to the dog, by using a handheld transmitter which causes an electric pulse in the collar. This distracts the dog from whatever undesirable behavior it is currently doing and lets the trainer get his attention.

Critics of these collars maintain that they are inhumane and hurt the animal, partly because it is difficult to know how severe the pain is. This can disorientate the dog, so that it doesn't associate the shock with the desired effect. Such confusion is obviously counterproductive.

For instance, your dog won't come when you call him and pays you no attention, so you clicj the remote. He may well associate the pain with being called, so every time you call him you provoke a nervous or aggressive reaction, depending on the dog's temperament.

If the dog has a naturally aggressive nature he may attack you, because he sees you as the source of his discomfort and the fear that you are hostile to him. If the dog has a nervous disposition and doesn't realise why he is being punished, this will only make him worse.

That's the case for the prosecution. There will be many people who claim that one of these collars has saved their dog' life. They cite cases, where a normally obedient dog has one undesirable trait which cannot be controlled, such as chasing cars or bikes, or worrying farm animals.

If they can instantly stop this bad behavior, even from a distance, then this can save the dog's life.

Another huge area of the market for control collars is aimed at stopping or controlling excessive barking. These products are different from the distance control collars, because they are not activated by the owner but by the dog itself.

There are broadly three categories of anti-barking collar: those that emit a spray, that the dog finds objectionable: those that emit a high-pitched noise, which humans can't hear: and those that administer a static shock, similar to the distance collars described above.

These collars are often worn by the dog when the owner is not present, for instance to stop a dog from barking while the owner is out at work. This situation can cause its own set of problems. If the dog is exposed to this unpleasant or painful stimulus for hours at an end, what state will he be in when you get home?

If you have the time, the patience and the knowledge, then by far the best solution is to train your dog to bark at appropriate times and to get him to "Speak and be "Quiet" on command. There are plenty of excellent training courses available at reasonable prices. More details in the links below.

However, if all else fails, you may want to choose from these three types of anti-barking collar.

1) Citronella Spray Collar: This works by spraying a mist of citronella in front of the dog's nose. Citronella is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a distinctive smell of wood or grass, which dogs find offensive but people quite like it. The spray is triggered when the dog barks.

Citronella is not quite as innocuous as the manufacturers may infer. The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for this product states: "Used as an insect repellent : Physical data - Appearance: colourless or light yellow liquid with characteristic odour of wood or grass : Flammable : Toxicology - May be harmful if ingested in quantity. May act as a skin or eye irritant".

2) Sonic Control Collar: This is an electronic collar which emits a high-pitched sound, when triggered by the barking. The sound is above the frequency audible to human ears but the dog finds it annoying and is discouraged from barking. These devices usually have a control to adjust the sensitivity.

3) Electric Shock Collar: Not normally described by the manufacturer or the retailer in these terms but that is what it does. This would appear to be the least popular of the three products, precisely because it causes the dog some degree of pain and it is difficult for the owner to appreciate how severe that pain is.

Hey there! I suggest you don't use a shock collar for your lab because it will just induce pain in him. If you really care for him, you should use more humane and pet-friendly collars, which utilize harmless sprays instead of electric shock. There are a lot of good collars out there, which can help you train your dogs painlessly and effectively. For example, there are anti-bark training collars (e.g. Gentle Spray Citronella Anti-Bark collar) that use spray technology to control your dog's nuisance barking. I don't know if these products are already available in the Philippines but I know you can order them online. Hope I'm able to help.

All dogs need training so that they learn to behave appropriately, especially in a family environment. To this end, training collars have been created to help you with this process, and they have proven to be very effective in this role. As with many things however, in the wrong hands, dog training collars can be used to hurt and abuse dogs, so you need to understand how they work and what they do.

The prong collar looks like a medieval torture device, but is actually one of the gentler training collars being investigated here. When the leash is pulled, the prongs start to pinch the back of the dog's neck. The thinking behind this is to replicate the memory of the dog's mother's teeth nipping the scruff of the puppy's neck. The collar is quite safe to use, the only real problem occurring if the fit is poor. If your dog is one that pulls strongly at the leash though, the prong collar might not be suitable.

A ready guide for the fit is if you can fit your finger between the collar and the dog's neck. If the collar is looser than that, it will not do it's job properly.

The Gentle Leader dog collar (or Halti collar) looks more like a harness. It works by closing the dog's mouth when you pull on the leash. The method aims to control the dog's general movement by controlling it's head. The theory being that the body will follow where the head goes. This type of collar is well suited to aggressive animals that lunge or bite.

There is a downside to this type of collar though. Dog's, as a rule, do not like having restrainers on their face, and it might be quite a job to get your dog to accept a harness of this type. Care should also be taken bot to pull the head to hard, because the dog could suffer injuries to the neck or back.

The choke collar is one of those items that can raise some people's hackles. Those that like them point to how effective they are in controlling a dog. Those that don't like them, would say that the collars are inhumane. The answer to this probably lies in the people who use the collars. Used correctly, choke collars can be very effective. Used in an inappropriate manner, the choke collar can be quite brutal.

Correct use of a choke collar starts with correct fitting. They work by tightening around the dog's throat when the leash is pulled. Equally, the tightness should be released when the trainer eases up on the leash, but if the collar does not fit correctly, this might not happen resulting in undue distress to the animal. If your dog is one that continually pulls on the leash, then the choke collar is probably not the right collar to use.

One of the newest forms of dog collar are the electronic one's. They are considered to be a very humane way to train a dog, but equally can be abused in the wrong hands.

The electronic dog collars work by allowing trainers to give dogs small electric shocks via a remote control to control the behaviour of the dog. How much of a shock the dog gets is entirely in the hands of the trainer, so in good hands, the electronic dog trainer can be very flexible and very effective. As a rule of thumb, the shock that is applied should be just enough to make the dog's ears twitch, but obviously the amount of electricity involved will depend on the size of the dog. In any case however, if the dog cries out when the electricity is applied, then the setting is too high. Once again, this type of collar is only really suitable for experienced trainers.

Does the terminator barking collar work?

I do want my dog to bark in the house for protection. The dalmation/shepard mix is 15yrs and my new beach neighbors want the barking to cease. Can he growl? Will it work, and does it hurt. I can't kepp going everywhere with my dog to stop her bark. Need advice, and where to possibly get one used.

The first thing to take into consideration when barking becomes excessive, is to learn why your dog is barking.

A well-exercised dog is more likely to sleep when you're not around. Spending time with your dog, engaging in playful activities, and maintaining a daily exercise routine can help.

Training activities can stimulate and teach your dog traits that are desirable instead of allowing bad habits accelerate out of control. Training activities can include commands, such as teaching them to sit, come, fetch, heel among many others. Every time your dog responds correctly to a command reward them with hugs, pets, praise and treats. But, be careful that the training session does not become boring and routine.

If your dog lives in the backyard most of the time, it probably needs some 'social exercising.' Walking your dog around the neighborhood, among other people, and let her get used to the sounds and smells she whiffs in the backyard. Involve her with family activities, and bring her in the house when you are home.

Keeping your dog in a place that will create lesser barking interests, close drapes to eliminate outside interests out of sight, and establishing a place away from street noises can help until your dog has refined her barking habits. If your dog is inside when you are not at home, leave the radio on. If phones and doorbells tend to set off a barking event, disconnect them before you leave.

Sometimes when a barking session begins, you can respond with an earthshaking, super loud, "STOP BARKING!" Most dogs are totally shocked and don't expect this outburst from you, might be amazed and stop barking. Things like a water gun can be effective. A surprising squirt of water to the face can work to stop the barking. And, as soon as your dog stops the barking rampage, a treat or reward should be offered.

If your dog's barking is a constant habit, don't expect the barking to stop overnight. It can take weeks, even months, of teaching and reinforcement to break an old habit. In addition to personally working with your dog to break her barking habit, there are collars to assist in your efforts. Basically there are three types of collars: Electronic, Ultrasonic, and Scent collars.

Electronic Collar: The collar is activated by barking vibrations from the dog's vocal cords. This type of collar is also called the 'shock' collar. Your dog will feel an electric shock when she starts barking. Supposedly, the collar doesn't hurt a dog, and is advertised to be more of an irritation or annoyance. However, the intensity of the shocks can be set from mild to high. Personally, I tend to believe this could be in cruel. The collar might actually cause the dog to be fearful of a natural activity, and withdraw from normal behavior, or become aggressive to the collar and injure itself. You do not want to stop your dog from barking entirely.

Citronella Anti-Bark Collar: Barking also triggers this type of collar. A mist of citronella scent sprays from the collar in front of the dog's nose. The citronella scent is not harmful to dogs, and besides not liking the smell, the hissing sound gets their attention. Studies have shown citronella barking collars to be twice as effective as other types of collars.

Ultrasonic Collar: This type of collar works by emitting ultrasonic signals that only dogs can hear. The dog hears a loud buzzing sound when they bark, Usually, dogs learn, quickly, that barking causes this irritating noise, and when they don't bark it stops. The sound is harmless, and can be set on low or high modes. Barking by other dogs does not trigger the unit.

If training and collars do not work, debarking surgery can be an alternative. However, this will not stop your dog from barking, but it does mute the sound and prevent it from carrying over great distances. Debarking appears to have no ill effects of a dog's desire to bark, and doesn't alter their personality in anyway. However, debarking should not be considered solely as a convenience, it should be chosen as a last-resort.

Has anyone had any luck with the citronella anti-bark collars???

My Doberman/German Shepard mix is a nuisance barker. I've tried positive reinforcement training and electric shock collar (which I didn't like and didn't work). He barks at anything and everything from birds to people talking a block away. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the citronella collar or anything else that would help to stop or at least lessen his barking. Please don't tell me to take him to a trainer, there aren't any around for hundreds of miles.

Sorry....my brother has a fifteen month old dobie, and he has the same problem with him! He's tried one of these collars, and it was just a waste of money!! He stopped yapping momentarily the first time it was used, and then just ignored it from then on!!
