Throughout history people have always loved dogs. They have been our faithful companions, friends and protectors. In more recent years our dogs have become more than pets and are now, at times, almost accessories.

For example our dogs now have outfits! Including, but in no way limited to, jumpers, dresses, hats and even shoes. They are dressed in the finest apparel, given the prettiest collars smothered with diamantes and are even carried in handbags.

This started as a celebrity trend, with the super rich showering their pampered pooches with gifts and designer labels but like most celebrity trends it has now trickled down to the high street. We love our dogs like they are members of the family and not only care for them but in many cases baby them. This obviously makes sense as it seems it is extremely common to purchase a dog as a baby replacement, I have to admit I have done this myself.

I also have to admit that my dog is no exception. She has a reindeer suit which she wears at Christmas, a teddy bear suit which she wore for my son's birthday party and even a pumpkin suit for Halloween. When we go for our family portrait photo every year she always comes along too, she is after all a member of our family.

That's the reason we just can't take any chances when it comes to her safety. She has her very cute pink and diamante collar but I always ensure she has a safety Id tag hanging from it, luckily I make them myself so I can make sure they are just as pretty as she is. Her tag has her photo engraved on the front and all her relevant details on the back.

It is horrible and almost impossible to comprehend but 2500 dogs go missing every week in the UK and a staggering 38% of missing dogs are actually stolen, even 35% of missing cross breed dogs are reported stolen so this terrible theft does not only apply to pedigree dogs. It is vital that as dog owners we protect our pets in every possible way. To most of us our dogs become more than a pet, they really are part of the family, they are included in every part of our lives and that can sometimes put them at risk.

Always ensure your dog is wearing an ID tag, never leave them unattended in public areas, check that they can't escape through holes in fences and hedges and be aware that there is a very real risk of theft.
