Can dogs be allergic to nickel?

I want to get my toy poodle a ridiculous rhinestone covered ID tag, but most of them seem to be made of nickel. Since it's inconvenient to order things online, and you can't return personalized stuff, I was wondering if my puppy could be allergic to nickel, and how rare that is.

She did have some mild dermatitis on her tummy when I got her, but it's cleared up and hasn't returned.

I had a dog break out EXACTLY where her tag on her harness hit her back...just where the metal tag was. This went on - and the fur fell off,etc. for 3 months. She was about 1 year old. Vet said "demodectic mange." Well, I obediently did the whole mange thing - spent the money, used the cremes,etc..... Got rid of the tag - presto - problem solved. Allergy to the metal. Thats my story.
