Andersen Window Balance Adjustment?

My Andersen Windows (Woodwright double hung tilt sash) are hard to operate up and down and won't stay up properly. I'm accustomed to the old spiral balance type windows and I know how to adjust that type. My question is ....Is there an adjustable balance on my Andersen's? I see what appears to be a length of very light nylon line in the jambs. Is that the balancer? Is it adjustable? Can you direct me to a site that will explain the procedure? Thanks,Ed

There is no adjustment, the balances are worn out. You can take the balance out and shorten the string but then you loose your travel. (I've never done this but have heard of people that have) What I would recommend is to buy and install a replacement balance. You can buy the balance for the next bigger size window, but that is a gamble also, you may wind up with too much lift and the sash will not stay where you put it.
