Possible Hairball?

my cat keeps throwing up food. i took him to the vet and she said it was a hairball and it would pass on its own. sometimes it looks like he's trying to get something up but can't. the vomiting isn't constant. he refuses to eat or drink and just hides. i have been giving him hartz advanced hairball rememedy ( the paste) and the vet gave him a shot of cortizone. he had no fever and all his bloodwork came back normal. is it normal for a hairball to cause this? how long does it take for a hairball to pass? will he be ok?

If this is a hairball, it should have passed or been vomited by now, especially if he is vomiting food. This tells me nothing is passing into his intestines.

This sounds like a blockage of some sort somewhere. It is very serious if kitty is refusing to eat and drink. These and hiding are telltale signs of serious illness. And because of their delicate systems, after 3 days of not eating there can be irreversible liver damage.

Please contact his vet again soon and let her know he is refusing to eat/drink. She should do x-rays and probably give him barium to find the location of the blockage. Many times with a blockage, the barium will surround the blockage and move it through the system.

My oldest kitty showed symptoms like this a couple years ago. I suspect the cause of her blockage was a piece of curling ribbon she chewed off a balloon bouquet. The object was visible on x-rays, but her vet and I could not see the exact location. He introduced the barium as the last resort before exploratory surgery. Thankfully, the object was gone after the barium moved out of her system.
