Dog Leash Large
My dog is is leash aggressive ONLY with some larger dogs. Help?
I have read that I should correct him and say "NO!," read that I should ignore the behavior, and read that I should try to distract him with treats. Lots of conflicting advice! He ignores treats when he gets worked up like this.
We live in the city so we are always walking past other dogs. My dog is fine until we are withing 3-4 feet of the dog and then he lunges and gets growly. My dog is fine with smaller dogs on leash and dogs that he already knows. He also gets along well with dogs in secure off leash environments. He is a very dominant dog and he feels the need to challenge larger dogs.
How should I work with him? I'm not sure if I should correct him for this aggression or ignore it? Neither seems to help and I am at my wits end...
Once your dog starts ignoring you and/or food you've lost control, you've pushed him past his threshold. At this point he is in a state of mind where learning cannot take place.
You need work with him below threshold. Since he reacts to dogs at 4 feet, you need start at 6 feet away. Shovel some treats in mouth for a few seconds, turn and walk the other way. If he won't take them at 6 feet, then you're still to close. If he takes them like a starved shark, you're to close.
Over time you can slowly move closer as your dog starts to associate those other dogs with good things. Essentially you are changing his perception of other dogs from bad, scary things that need to go away, to great things that mean awesome stuff happens.
