My dog is chewing on wood.?
My one-year-old Beagle Laborador mix is a heavy chewer. She chews everything from her bed in her kennel, the towel that I replaced it with, the blanket I replaced the towel with, plastic toys, plush toys, crayons, pencils, a wooden magazine rack, and door frames. We are lucky enough that she has not chewed on any major funiture... yet. We have gotten considerably more diligent in making sure that there are no items available to her and the toys, crayons and pencils are thus far being spared. But she still chews the wood. Is it safe for her? What can I do to stop her?
I went to Petsmart and bought her a Nylabone and she loves it. She chews it all the time, but she still occasionally chews the wooden magazine rack. Pieces of it have been chewed off, some are on the floor and some are, I can only assume, being swallowed.
It's not going to hurt her to shew the wood, unless shes eating a 2x4. There are many reasons why dogs chew. Loneliness, boardome, aggression, to much energy and the list can go on and on. Have you tried giving her chew bones to occupy her time? Make sure she has allot of correspondence she is still in a puppy stage. Animals, especially dogs act just like people in allot of cases. Ask yourself, if I was her what would i want? A friend to play with, a pat on the head, to go for a walk to release my energy? I have a rescue pit/boxer mix and went through the same thing temporarily, and had to make sure that i let him know it was wrong to chew on certain thing when i caught him. With dogs you also need to establish yourself as the ALFA leader. Spend some extra time everyday with you pup and teach it different things, this also helps relieve energy and builds a stronger companionship. Again dogs in many senses are allot like people, if you treat them as such with basic functionality and companionship you will see her disposition improve.
